Is Our News Getting Over-Skyped?

The NY Daily News’ Richard Huff writes today about the ever-increasing use of webcams and Skype as a reporting tool in our local (and national) newscasts:

Cell-phone video, Skype and various other technologies are often pitched as being cutting-edge when, in reality, they absolutely lower the quality of the product. Few will admit that, though… Traditionally, new technology has almost always improved a product. TV news, of course, is bucking that trend.

Of course, the decision is not always an aesthetic one. With cutbacks and staff reductions occurring with increasing frequency, Skype can provide an obvious low-cost alternative for a newscast.

“While technology has improved our ability to gather and report the news with remarkable speed and precision, it is, at the same time, allowing news executives to diminish its quality,” a local correspondent told Huff. “Technology should be making the news better – instead, it’s making it cheaper.”

What do you think (financial concerns aside)? Vote in our poll after the jump.

Tom Brokaw on His ‘BIG Wake-Up Call’

In an essay for the wowOwow.com series “The Woman I Love“, NBC’s Tom Brokaw writes about wife Meredith.

The two began dating in college. Meredith became Miss South Dakota and earned good grades, while Brokaw dropped out after “too many parties, girls and booze”:

[Meredith] began refusing my calls and eventually wrote a strongly worded letter saying, in effect, “I am not interested in someone who is at such a dead end and who is such a disappointment to his family and everyone around him.”

It was a BIG wake-up call. I got a job in a local television newsroom and began commuting to school while working full time. My grades and deportment improved markedly but I had given up on Meredith, until one day she approached me and said she had been out of line to write such a harsh critique. I assured her it was just what I needed. One thing led to another and less than a year later we were engaged.

Married since 1962, Brokaw remains “in awe of Meredith’s cool, centered inner compass as she pursued her own life at a comfortable distance from my network profile.”

A Sneak Peak at the New CNN Set

Anchor Rick Sanchez posts this little backstage tour of the new CNN set in Atlanta, which will officially be unveiled Monday.

We turn to mediabistro.com video producer and science-fiction expert Weston Almond for his analysis:

It looks like the set of the Enterprise in the series “Enterprise” — the version with Scott Bakula at the helm — as seen through the eyes of a Lifetime movie.

CBS’ “Face the Nation” moved back into second place, growing in total viewers week-to-week, while ABC’s “This Week” drew a smaller audience than the week previous and was the third most-watched. Both ABC and CBS were also down in the demo.

Cable and network rebroadcasts of “MTP” drew an additional 841,000 viewers. “Fox News Sunday” drew an additional 1.68 million total viewers on cable replays.

Ann Curry to Oprah Winfrey: ‘Was it you or ‘Good Morning America’ that hung up on us just now?’

Oprah Winfrey made the rounds this morning on the morning shows. She phoned in to talk about the dangers of talking and texting while driving. But, despite GMA’s claim of being an exclusive, Winfrey dialed into CBS’ “The Early Show” and NBC’s “Today” show too.

At one point, “Today” lost Oprah’s call. When they came back from break, Ann Curry joked, “We’re told that Oprah is back on the phone with us. Oprah, was it you or ‘Good Morning America’ that hung up on us just now?”

“It was not I,” said Oprah.

And Oprah’s appearances didn’t end there. She called up MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” around 8:45amET. “Oh my gosh I finally made the “Morning Joe” show,” said Winfrey. “I love the Morning Joe team.”

As part of the plan, Oprah is asking people to pledge not to talk or text while driving. So far there are 219,000+ pledges on the No Phone Zone pledge on Oprah.com.

‘World News Now’ Stage Manager to Give his Final Cue

Friday morning on World News Now (yes, you’ll either have to stay up really late, or wake up really early) the show will say goodbye to Peter Grimm who has been World News Now’s stage manager for the past 17 years.

Grimm, who we hear will sleep in until Noon on Monday, has been floor director with virtually every host in the early morning show’s eclectic anchor history. And as a tribute 21 of them will wish him off. That includes Ryan Owens 2007-2008, David Muir 2003-2004, Tamala Edwards 2003-2005, Alison Stewart 2000-2002, Liz Cho 2002-2003, Kevin Newman 1994-1996, Thalia Assuras 1993-1997, Bill Greenwood & Sheilah Kast 1993-1996, Derek McGinty 2001-2003, Asha Blake (pictured with Grimm) 1997-1998, Heather Cabot 2005, Ron Corning 2004-2006, Mark Mullen 1996-1998, Anderson Cooper 1999-2000, Andrea Stassou 2003, Taina Hernandez 2005-2007, Hari Sreenivasan 2006-2007, Melinda Wittstock 1998 and Juju Chang 1999-2000.

Also, Barry Mitchell will be in to do a special live polka for Peter, with the original “Mitchellettes” his back-up singers on the first WNN polka back in 1993. Set your DVRs kids! Or look for video tomorrow, which will include a certain creator of the show who has gone on to bigger, magic-er things at another network.

Conan O’Brien on his Final NBC Days: ‘I think this relationship is going be toxic and maybe we just need to go our separate ways’

Conan O’Brien in his Los Angeles home last week talking to Steve Kroft in his first interview since leaving The Tonight Show.

TBS’s Conan O’Brien tells “60 Minutes’” Steve Kroft he would have left NBC rather than do what Jay Leno did to him.

“He went and took that show back and I think in a similar situation, if roles had been reversed, I know — I know me, I wouldn’t have done that,” O’Brien says. “If I had surrendered The Tonight Show and handed it over to somebody publicly and wished them well — and then…six months later. But that’s me. Everyone’s got their own, you know, way of doing things,” he tells Kroft.

Kroft’s interview with O’Brien, his first since leaving NBC, will be broadcast on “60 Minutes” this Sunday. O’Brien has also been named to the TIME 100.
