Cell-phone video, Skype and various other technologies are often pitched as being cutting-edge when, in reality, they absolutely lower the quality of the product. Few will admit that, though… Traditionally, new technology has almost always improved a product. TV news, of course, is bucking that trend.

Of course, the decision is not always an aesthetic one. With cutbacks and staff reductions occurring with increasing frequency, Skype can provide an obvious low-cost alternative for a newscast.

“While technology has improved our ability to gather and report the news with remarkable speed and precision, it is, at the same time, allowing news executives to diminish its quality,” a local correspondent told Huff. “Technology should be making the news better – instead, it’s making it cheaper.”

Starting this week, MSNBC will be re-airing the run of NBC’s “Who Do You Think You Are” series on Friday evenings at 10pmET through June 11th. The network has regularly swapped reality and documentary programming into that time slot in the past.

CBS’ “Face the Nation” moved back into second place, growing in total viewers week-to-week, while ABC’s “This Week” drew a smaller audience than the week previous and was the third most-watched. Both ABC and CBS were also down in the demo.

Cable and network rebroadcasts of “MTP” drew an additional 841,000 viewers. “Fox News Sunday” drew an additional 1.68 million total viewers on cable replays.

Oprah Winfrey made the rounds this morning on the morning shows. She phoned in to talk about the dangers of talking and texting while driving. But, despite GMA’s claim of being an exclusive, Winfrey dialed into CBS’ “The Early Show” and NBC’s “Today” show too.

At one point, “Today” lost Oprah’s call. When they came back from break, Ann Curry joked, “We’re told that Oprah is back on the phone with us. Oprah, was it you or ‘Good Morning America’ that hung up on us just now?”

“It was not I,” said Oprah.

And Oprah’s appearances didn’t end there. She called up MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” around 8:45amET. “Oh my gosh I finally made the “Morning Joe” show,” said Winfrey. “I love the Morning Joe team.”

As part of the plan, Oprah is asking people to pledge not to talk or text while driving. So far there are 219,000+ pledges on the No Phone Zone pledge on Oprah.com.

TBS’s Conan O’Brien tells “60 Minutes’” Steve Kroft he would have left NBC rather than do what Jay Leno did to him.

“He went and took that show back and I think in a similar situation, if roles had been reversed, I know — I know me, I wouldn’t have done that,” O’Brien says. “If I had surrendered The Tonight Show and handed it over to somebody publicly and wished them well — and then…six months later. But that’s me. Everyone’s got their own, you know, way of doing things,” he tells Kroft.

Kroft’s interview with O’Brien, his first since leaving NBC, will be broadcast on “60 Minutes” this Sunday. O’Brien has also been named to the TIME 100.
