NHL Winter Classic Moved To 8 p.m. ET

The National Hockey League announced on Friday afternoon that the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will move from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m ET on Saturday night.

The decision to move the game back was based on the latest meteorological reports, which show an approaching front of potentially steady rain expected to fall through the afternoon and taper off by early evening.

As a result of the rain, there are a number of weather-related game procedure contingencies for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. continued…

From the TVNewser tipbox:

CNN’s Carter Evans left the Nasdaq early this morning because wife Courtney Friel is in labor!

Friel, who is an anchor at Fox News Channel, announced her pregnancy on her Facebook page, back in August. Yesterday <a href="http://www.facebook.com/CourtneyFriel#!/CourtneyFriel?v=wall"target="_blank">on her Wall, Friel wrote,

was just at hospital checkup- they confirmed my baby doc’s estimates that he already weighs 9 lbs! Yikes! Please son- evict yourself now!

Update: From Friel: “Well that was quite an experience! *Cash Hudson Evans* was born at 6:08 am on 1-1-11. 9 lbs even (ouch). He’s perfect and healthy and I will post pics when I can. Thanks for the well-wishes! Happy New Year everyone!

Anderson Cooper-Rachel Maddow: Separated at Birth?

The other night on AC360, Anderson Cooper chatted with Kathy Griffin, to promote tonight’s New Year’s Eve special on CNN. Cooper sported his Rachel Maddow look for the interview. “Ryan Seacrest would not be caught dead with those glasses.”

This Guy Really Likes the Current ‘Early Show’ Team

Today is the last (official) day for the current “Early Show” team of Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price, with a new anchor crew coming on board in January.

Some people are not taking the change well:

There is also a “Save the Current Early Show Team” page on Facebook, but the 822 “likes” probably aren’t enough to force CBS to make any changes.

Morning Show Ratings: Week of December 20

The second to last week in December, which also included the Christmas Eve holiday, was a fairly slow one for the broadcast morning shows.

As usual, NBC’s “Today” led the pack, followed by ABC’s “Good Morning America” and CBS’ “Early Show.”

All three programs were down in both total and demo viewers compared to the previous week.

The averages for the week of December 20:

Total Viewers: NBC: 5.36M / ABC: 4.55M / CBS: 2.71M
A25-54 rating: NBC: 2.49M / ABC: 1.70M / CBS: 1.08M

Are Fox News and MSNBC Leading To a ‘Less-Informed But More Opinionated Public’?

Former CBS Marketwatch CEO Larry Kramer blogs about MSNBC and Fox News on his blog, C-Scape. In a nutshell, Kramer argues that today’s busy media consumer, lacking the time to dig in to issues themselves, instead relies on cognitive shortcuts to familiarize themselves with what the “correct” opinions are, based on their preexisting ideology.

In Kramer’s opinion, Fox News and MSNBC are at the heart of this problem, which he says is “a bad thing for democracy” and leads to a “less-informed but more opinionated public.”

It is, frankly, easier for someone to turn on either Fox News or MSNBC, listen to the frequent opinion expressed, right or left, and benchmark themselves against that opinion rather than forming their own opinion based on independent thinking.

So if a new Supreme Court Justice was named tomorrow, more people would check out what Fox and MSNBC said about him or her, and then quickly decide whether or not they were in favor or opposed to approving the candidate. “If Fox (or MSNBC) like him, so do I,” a viewer can decide, (or the opposite) based totally on that viewer’s political stance and how it relates to Fox or MSNBC.

Kramer is an incredibly smart and well-respected TV executive, but in this case he seems to miss the mark in at least two ways:

The Year In Sports In Just 247 Seconds

Gawker.TV has a great video on their site of the best sports highlights of 2010 in 247 seconds.

Normally, I would post the video, but the Gawker folks aren’t believers of the sharing is caring philosophy.

Regardless, it’s worth a look.

Piers Morgan: ‘The whole delightful point of Twitter is that there is no honour amongst Twits’

As “Piers Morgan Tonight” inches closer to its premiere, CNN’s new host has been accused by many of picking fights with his Twitter followers. One of his favorite targets is @Lord_Sugar: Chairman of Amshold Group a British company with interests in digital media and real estate.

Morgan frequently mentions @Lord_Sugar (possibly because he has over 247,000 followers):

@Lord_Sugar 5 months to get 250k followers isn’t that ‘incredible’ compared to 140k in 5 weeks, Lordy.

When we Tweeted @PiersMorgan about his Twitter-tude, he direct Tweeted us back:

Yes..’The whole delightful point of Twitter is that there is no honour amongst Twits.’

ESPN The Magazine Selects Buster Posey As Their "NEXT" Athlete

ESPN The Magazine has dubbed San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey as their “NEXT” athlete for 2011.

The National League Rookie of the Year hit .305 with 18 home runs in only 108 games.

Joining Posey in their respective sports are Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, Evander Kane of the Atlanta Thrashers and Patrick Peterson of LSU.

For the most part, ESPN The Magazine has got it right in selecting the next breakout athlete.

Well, minus 2004.

David Shuster: ‘MSNBC will never be as liberal as Fox is conservative’

David Shuster guest hosted The Jim Bohannon syndicated radio show yesterday. It was a return to the airwaves for DC-based Shuster whose MSNBC contract ran out earlier this month. He’d been suspended indefinitely last April for trying out for a job at a rival network.

“I have nothing but good feelings toward MSNBC in the 8 and a half years that I was there,” Shuster said on the show. “I was looking around, and we had a disagreement about what happened. And MSNBC decided ‘you’re contract says that we don’t have to put you on the air.’ And the fact of the matter is they did not have to put me on the air.”

Shuster talked about the perks of not working full-time for most of the year — such as charity work, being with his family, and getting to look at the media from an outsider’s perspective.

When asked by a caller about his feelings toward Fox News, where Shuster worked for 6 years, he said, “A very wise man once told me: I should never talk about Fox after having worked there. Just because, no good could come out of saying what I really feel.” He then mentioned the study that implies that Fox News viewers are misinformed. “There are some terrific journalists at Fox News Channel. I think Shep Smith is probably the premiere anchor/journalist of my generation. He’s terrific, and he does the news straight and let the chips fall where they may.”

“MSNBC will never be as liberal as Fox is conservative,” said Shuster to another caller. When the discussion turned to Glenn Beck, Shuster said the Fox News host has “every right to broadcast what he wants, but the rest of society also has a right to say when he’s wrong.”

So, where is Shuster going in 2011?

23.7 Million Viewers Watched Tuesday Night Football

The final numbers are in and the first NFL Tuesday game since 1946 was a smash hit.

23.7 million viewers tuned in to see the Minnesota Vikings upset the Philadelphia Eagles, a 25 percent increase over last year’s Week 16 game (Dallas-Washington) and the fifth most-watched Sunday Night Football game this season and the sixth most-watched ever.

Of the 16 SNF games so far in 2010, 11 have surpassed 20 million viewers, the most in NBC’s five-year history. To put that number in comparison, SNF surpassed 20 million viewers a combined 13 times from 2006-2009.
