What brought Sarah Palin and Matthew Morrison to the same event?

Last year at the annual pre-White House Correspondents Dinner Garden Brunch, Greta Van Susteren brought Kim Kardashian as her guest. This year, Greta looked beyond Hollywood and headed straight for Alaska bringing along Sarah Palin who really had brunch-goers turning their heads.

Tammy Haddad‘s annual brunch — which has outgrown its original location in Haddad and husband Ted Greenberg‘s backyard — was held this year at the historic Beall – Washington House, with its expansive yard, larger patios, and multiple watering holes. Haddad, a former MSNBC, CNN and NBC executive and producer shuttled the A-listers around the event — which is always a diverse mix of politicians, actors and journalists.

In addition to Palin, “Glee”‘s Matthew Morrison dropped in, as did Jesse Tyler Ferguson, of “Modern Family” and Chace Crawford of “Gossip Girl.”

We chatted up ABC’s Jonathan Karl, Chris Wallace of Fox News, Pete Williams of NBC News, and Ed Henry and Jessica Yellin of CNN and also spotted MSNBC’s Ed Schultz and Lawrence O’Donnell, FNC’s Bret Baier, CNN’s Dana Bash and Suzanne Malveaux (and twin sister Suzette) and NBC’s Savannah Guthrie.

Susan Axelrod, wife of Obama adviser David Axelrod, and Wendi Murdoch, wife of media mogul Rupert Murdoch (both right, with Matthew Morrison) co-chaired the event which was a fundraiser for CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy).

TVNewsers take TIME to Party

Last night People & TIME hosted their White House Correspondents’ Dinner cocktail party at the St. Regis in DC. The event drew a mix of celebs and media.

Several tvnewsers from ABC, CNN, NBC, MSNBC and FNC showed up including: Norah O’Donnell (below, left with Arianna Huffington, Savannah Guthrie (below, right), Ed Schultz, Wolf Blitzer, Dana Bash, Kelly O’Donnell, Chris Wallace, Greta Van Susteren, Betsy Fischer, Kelly O’Donnell, Ann Compton, Michelle Jaconi and Sam Feist.

From Southern Storms to Royal Wedding, a Friday Night of News

The broadcast networks devoted a significant chunk of time last night to news programs. CBS produced an hour on the Royal Wedding at 8pm, while NBC and ABC went head-to-head with two hour specials from 9-11pm. The first hour of “Dateline” was anchored by Brian Williams and was devoted almost entirely to the storms in the south, while ABC’s 2-hour “20/20″ was devoted almost entirely to the Royal Wedding.

“20/20″ drew 6.7 million total viewers and a 1.6 rating/5 share in A18-49. The Barbara Walters-hosted special drew 1.8 million more viewers than “Dateline” and by +33% in the A18-49 demo.

“20/20′s” second hour, which included a report from Jim Avila in storm-ravaged Alabama, saw its audience grow in Total Viewers and was #1 at 10pm in the A18-49 demo.

Experian Hitwise: Chris Matthews Plays Hardball

The top two cable-news-show websites for the week ending April 23 were unchanged from the previous week — Fox News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor and MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show — while third place on the Experian Hitwise charts went to MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, which bumped Fox News’ America’s Newsroom off the list.

The late-night talk-show website order was unchanged from the week ending April 16: Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report, trailed by NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The morning news shows finished in their usual order: NBC’s Today, ABC’s Good Morning America, and CBS’ The Early Show.

One of those places was a restaurant that specializes in… unusual… cuisine.

Roger Goodell Understands Why He Was Booed At NFL Draft

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell responded to the series of boos he heard Thursday night at the 2011 NFL Draft.

“It’s the fans’ frustration, and I understand that,” Goodell said Friday. “They want football, you want football and I want football. I think everyone’s frustrated by the circumstance, and I think that was a clear indication of it. I understand their frustration with me not being able to solve that. That’s my job and that’s my responsibility, and I accept that.”

As soon as fans at Radio City Music Hall find out the NFL lockout is back on, Goodell can expect another round of boos.

Roger McDowell Placed On Administrative Leave

Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell has been placed on administrative leave while they investigate allegations he made homophobic comments and sexual gestures towards fans at AT&T Park in San Francisco last weekend.

General manager Frank Wren hopes to conclude the team’s investigation this weekend. Manager Fredi Gonzalez doesn’t think McDowell will lose his job as a result.

“In my opinion, it shouldn’t. It really shouldn’t,” Gonzalez said. “I’m sure there’s some hoops he’s going to go through, some apologizing, which he should have to go through. But for a person to lose their job, I wouldn’t think so. I hope it doesn’t.”

Video: Soccer coach fired one day after hitting reporter

Danish soccer coach Ove Christensen has been fired one day after hitting a reporter who asked him whether he could stay on as coach following a 4-0 loss. Below’s the clip of Christensen belting the reporter on the arm and then trying to play it off like it was a congratulatory pat for asking good questions.

Believe it or not, the team he coached, Randers, said Christensen was not fired for hitting the reporter, but for poor team play. So if he smacked the reporter following a 4-0 win, Christensen would still be coach…

WrestleMania 27 Reaches 1 Million Pay-Per-View Buys

While it might have been a dud to wrestling fans, WrestleMania 27 reached its goal of 1 million pay-per-view buys.

Last year’s WrestleMania scored 885,000 orders, which was down from 960,000 in 2009. According to World Wrestling Entertainment, pay-per-view buys are up 30 percent in North America and up 15 percent overseas. The final numbers are still being tallied.

With The Rock vs. John Cena already set as the main event for WrestleMania 28, the WWE can pencil in another 1 million pay-per-view buys for next year.

Surprise: NFL Draft Ratings Down From 2010

Coverage of the 2011 NFL Draft on ESPN and the NFL Network combined for a 5.1 rating and 7 million viewers. Those numbers were down 22 percent and 16 percent respectively from 2010.

Despite the ratings slide, it’s still the second-most watched first round behind last year’s 8.3 million.

While you could make the claim that the NFL Draft faced stiff competition between the NBA Playoffs and NBC’s The Office, it’s the first sign that fans are tired of the back-and-forth between the NFL and the players.

Just ask Roger Goodell, who was greeted Thursday night with a round of boos from the crowd.

It’s Official: Erin Burnett Joining CNN

CNBC anchor Erin Burnett will join CNN as an anchor and “chief business and economics correspondent” in June, CNN has confirmed.

Burnett will anchor a weekday general news program, though no timeslot has been announced.

Burnett’s move was first reported yesterday by the NY Times‘ Brian Stelter.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be part of the world’s preeminent news organization,” said Burnett in a statement. “I cannot wait to launch our new show: tackling serious issues and telling great stories. The experience I gained at CNBC and NBC News will be invaluable as I expand my focus. I began my journalism career at CNN, so this is like coming home for me.”

The jump gives Burnett a higher profile, and a chance to cut her news chops on non-financial subjects. Burnett has been with CNBC since 2005, and before that was at Bloomberg TV. She worked at CNN as a writer and booker in 2000-2001.

HBO Sports Documentary On McEnroe/Borg Rivalry Airs June 11

HBO Sports has started production on McEnroe/Borg: Fire & Ice, a documentary on tennis legends John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.

The two tennis stars have a legendary rivalry during the ’70s and ’80s. The documentary debuts June 11 on HBO.

“Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe are tennis royalty,” said Ross Greenburg, president, HBO Sports. “Their rivalry was brief yet historic, and their individual life stories are fascinating and compelling. We hope to tell the full story of their rivalry and enduring friendship.”

McEnroe/Borg: Fire & Ice will look back at their tennis careers and spotlight how both men went their separate ways in their post-tennis careers. continued…

The BBC Celebrates the Royal Wedding in New York

Did you hear? There was some sort of wedding today.

British expats, Anglophiles, ad agency types and reporters crammed into the BBC’s New York City offices bright and early this morning to watch the Royal Wedding.

Starting at 6 AM, the offices were transformed into a giant party, with televisions at every corner tuned into BBC One’s coverage of the Royal nuptials. Your TVNewser editor spotted actor Stephen Baldwin sitting at a diner booth in the office kitchen chatting with a group of young women, while nearby guests poured cups of tea and coffee.
