Networks Go Live Sunday Evening As President Announces Debt Deal

The last time President Obama spoke late on a Sunday evening back in May, he came bearing important news about foreign policy. Tonight, he had some important news about the economy. Democratic and Republican lawmakers brokered a deal to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for spending cuts.

The big three broadcast networks interrupted their normal Sunday evening program just after 8:40 PM ET to cover President Obama’s comments on the deal. Russ Mitchell anchored for CBS, George Stephanopoulos for ABC, and Brian Williams–who was already in 30 Rock for “Nightly” and the “Inside Congress” special–anchored for NBC:

Brian Williams will be anchoring “NBC Nightly News” tonight, in advance of the 7 PM special taking viewers inside Congress. A preview of that special is below.

David Gregory Hosting Roundtable Discussion on God for Discovery Channel

Politics it aint, but that won’t stop NBC “Meet the Press” moderator David Gregory from moderating a roundtable discussion on Discovery Channel. The subject? “Did God Create the Universe?”

As Michael Schneider at TV Guide notes, the special is slated to run August 7 at 9 PM, following the debut episode of Discovery’s series “Curiosity.” The debut episode focuses on renowned physicist Stephen Hawking and his views on God and the universe.

NBC’s Peacock Productions is producing the special, hence Gregory’s involvement.

NBC “Today” executive producer Jim Bell and weather anchor Al Roker get profiled in The Hollywood Reporter‘s new “Philanthropy Issue.” The reason for the accolades? Roker’s “Lend a Hand” series on “Today.,” which helps those in need.

For 10 years, Roker has spearheaded Today’s annual weeklong Lend a Hand tour, crisscrossing the U.S. in a truck filled with millions of dollars worth of supplies — everything from food to clothes to cars are donated by businesses — for needy charities. “He has not forgotten where he came from and considers himself to be the luckiest guy. He loves giving back,” says Today exec producer Bell.

CNN Launching Civil Rights Forum Series

CNN, along with the James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference at Emory University, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, are joining forced to launch a series of dialogues addressing important issues of the day.

Dubbed the CNN Dialogues, the inaugural discussion will focus on the U.S. Census and the change demographic face of America. Wolf Blitzer will moderate the panel, which will be held in CNN’s backyard in Atlanta, Georgia.

After 50 Years, CBS Set Designer Bids Farewell

CBS News bid farewell last week to Victor Paganuzzi, the creator of CBS Sunday Morning set. Paganuzzi is retiring after 50 years with the network.

Paganuzzi began his career with CBS Television in December of 1962, assisting the set designer of “The Jackie Gleason Show.”

In 1974, Paganuzzi began a 25-year run at CBS News designing sets for primaries, elections and inaugurations. The most enduring and recognizable design appears every Sunday morning on CBS — the plexiglass flats and accompanying sun logo, which have remained unchanged since the show’s premiere in 1979.

On Wednesday, Paganuzzi went on “The Early Show” — the set for which he also created — to talk about his half-century at CBS.

Stephen Colbert Chastises Don Lemon For Not Calling Out ‘Vampire’

With the debt-ceiling deadline slated for early next week, CBS is taking its two signature daily newscasts to Washington. The “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” will originate from DC Monday, August 1, while Erica Hill will co-anchor :”The Early Show” from the city.

Ochocinco Departure 'Inspires' Lame Headline in Cincinnati Enquirer

Having worked in newspapers for more than a decade, I’ve seen my share of bad headlines, and written one or two myself. But the headline in today’s Cincinnati Enquirer referencing the departure of Chad Ochocinco is so lame it might merit its own award from the APSE.

It reads, “Cinco G’Bye-O.”

Ya see what they did there? They turned the first “O” in Ocho into “G’bye.”

Cinco G’Bye-O. It’s Spanish for ~~Eight~~ Five G’Bye-O, i.e., it accomplished the Heruclean task of looking sillier than Chad Ochocinco.

How Is Bill O’Reilly Spending a Debt-Focused Friday? Filming a Guest Spot on TNT’s,’Rizzoli & Isles’

The debt ceiling may be the big story on cable news today, but Fox News Channel host Bill O’Reilly has bigger things to worry about at the moment. O’Reilly is a suspect in a mysterious murder… on the set of the TNT series “Rizzoli & Isles.”

It was last Summer that we told you that O’Reilly paid a visit to the set of the TNT drama “Rizzoli & Isles,” (he is friends with co-star Angie Harmon) and earlier this year, we noted that O’Reilly had been tapped to play himself in an upcoming episode. Today, word comes from two production sources and a source at Turner that O’Reilly is currently on the set to film his role as a murder suspect.

Is he guilty? You will have to wait until the new season starts to find out.

David Muir on Somalia Famine: ‘It’s Heartbreaking’

Although the news cycle this week has been dominated by politics as Republicans and Democrats struggle to come to a deal on the debt ceiling, there is another major story happening far away from Washington — a devastating famine in Somalia.

David Muir, weekend anchor of “ABC World News,” has been embedded with Doctors Without Borders at a refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya, since Monday. Muir told The Huffington Post he wanted his reporting to showcase “the resiliency of kids who made the journey with their parents.”

“I think it’s heartbreaking and when you walk into these intensive care units, you can’t help but look at their mothers and the children lying next to them, and hope that they’ll be the ones sitting up tomorrow,” Muir said.

ABC and NBC both have correspondents in the region — ABC’s Lama Hasan has been in Kenya since July 16, and NBC’s Rohit Kachroo has been there since July 6.
