November 2011 Ratings: Fox News Still Dominant, But Down

In the month of November Fox News had the 13 most-watched shows in cable news. In younger viewers 9 of the top 10 shows air on Fox News and the network was the third most-watched cable news channel after ESPN and USA.

The ratings for November, 2011:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 1.739M Total Viewers / 368K A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 1.048M Total Viewers / 259K A25-54

And while the network is by far the most watched in cable news, year-over-year FNC is down -13% in Total Viewers and down -16% in A25-54 viewers for Total Day viewing. In Primetime the network is down -19% among Total Viewers and down -30% in A25-54 viewers.

“Special Report with Bret Baier” and “FOX Report with Shepard Smith” were the #3 and #4 shows in all of cable behind perennial #1 “The O’Reilly Factor” and most-often #2 “Hannity.”

“The Five” had its best month since its July debut beating CNN’s “The Situation Room” and MSNBC’s “Hardball” combined in both Total Viewers and A25-54 during the 5pmET timeslot, but a dropoff from “Glenn Beck” which aired at this time last year: down -34% in Total Viewers and down -37% in younger viewers.

November 2011 Ratings: MSNBC Edges Out CNN to Reclaim Second Place

MSNBC pulled back ahead of CNN this month, reclaiming the #2 spot among the cable news networks across the board: in primetime and in Total Day.

The ratings for November, 2011:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 729K Total Viewers / 215K A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 427K Total Viewers / 139K A25-54

For the past two months, CNN had edged out MSNBC in A25-54 viewers in primetime, which resulted in MSNBC swapping Ed Schultz and Lawrence O’Donnell‘s time slots in late October. The shake-up appears to have paid off for MSNBC: in November, “The Ed Show” topped CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360″ in total viewers (944,000 vs. 648,000) and the demographic (201,000 vs. 191,000). But despite the strong numbers, the 8pmET hour is down -19% in Total Viewers and down -36% in the A25-54 demo compared to November 2010, when “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” aired.

The switch has also benefited the 10pmET hour. O’Donnell’s “The Last Word” is outdrawing the re-air of “AC360″ in both ratings measurements and has posted a +6% increase in Total Viewers year-over-year but is down -10% in younger viewers.

“Morning Joe” takes second-place in the cable news 6-9am time period for the eighth consecutive month. Year-over-year the show is flat in Total Viewers but up +9% in younger viewers.

November 2011 Ratings: CNN Improves Daytime and Primetime

It’s a growth story for CNN in the month of November. The network was up +4% in Total Day viewing and up +6% in primetime, compared to November 2010. Up in the A25-54 demo too: +3% Total Day and +1% in primetime.

The ratings for November, 2011:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 640K Total Viewers / 185K A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 409K Total Viewers / 122K A25-54

Anderson Cooper 360″ at 8pmET has dramatically improved the timeslot: +43% in Total Viewers and +49% in younger viewers vs. Parker/Spitzer which aired at this time last year. The re-air at 10pm is also up. “Erin Burnett Outfront” has boosted the 7pmET slot by +16% in Total Viewers and +3% in younger viewers. “Piers Morgan Tonight” at 9pmET didn’t fare so well, down -2% in Total Viewers and down -3% in younger viewers vs. “Larry King Live” in Nov. 2010.

Interestingly, “American Morning,” which will be replaced in January, is up +2% in Total Viewers and up +14% in younger viewers year-over-year.

November 2011 Ratings: HLN Has Rough Month in Primetime

HLN had a rough month in November in primetime. While its crime-focused dayside programming performed very well thanks to the Conrad Murray trial, the channel’s primetime shows were almost all down compared to last year.

The ratings for November, 2011:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 387K Total Viewers / 105K A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 255K Total Viewers / 88K A25-54

HLN’s afternoon programming in the 2 to 6 PM hours were all up double digits over last year, thanks in large part to coverage of the Murray trial.

In primetime however things were not so rosy. “Nancy Grace” was down double-digits (-17% in Total Viewers and -25% in the demo) compared to last year, though she was absent for some of the month due to her participation on “Dancing with the Stars.”

“Issues with Jane Velez Mitchell” was also down compared to last year at 7 PM, down -8% in Total Viewers and -down 27% in the demo.

At 9 PM, “Dr. Drew” was down compared to the time period last year when Joy Behar was in that slot, though he has improved in the time period since taking over earlier this year.

Ann Coulter Has Thoughts on Why Joy Behar’s HLN Show is Going Away: Not Enough Casey Anthony

Ann Coulter is making the rounds this week, getting silenced on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” yesterday and last night telling HLN’s Joy Behar why she thinks Behar’s show has been canceled. “It is a vast Casey Anthony conspiracy! Your show was the only one I could watch and avoid hearing anything about that white trash bimbo.”

Evening News Ratings: Week of November 21 and November Sweeps

The Thanksgiving holiday resulted in a shortened ratings week for the evening newscasts November 21-27. As usual “NBC Nightly News” won the week, followed by “ABC World News” and the “CBS Evening News.”

Those numbers are based on a three-day total for NBC (Mon.,Tues., Fri.) and ABC (Mon.-Wed.), and a two-day total for CBS (Mon.-Tues.).

Compared to the same week last year, NBC was down slightly in both total and demo viewers, ABC was barely up in total viewers and more or less flat in the demo, and CBS was up in total viewers, and flat in the demo.

Numbers for the week of November 21, 2011:

NBC ABC CBS
• Total Viewers: 9,922,000 8,256,000 7,062,000
• A25-54: 2,644,000 2,224,000 2,087,000

Fire Alarm Interrupts ‘NBC Nightly News’

It was an eventful night at 30 Rock, where apparently there are still some kinks in the new “Nightly News” facilities. A fire alarm went off in the studio a few seconds into the live 6:30ET/5:30CT broadcast — and continued throughout the entire show. Between delivering the actual news, anchor Brian Williams spent his time reassuring viewers that it was just a test and that the “Nightly” crew was in no danger. Watch:

An NBC News spokesperson says that Williams anchored a new — fire-alarm free — version of “Nightly” for the mountain and pacific time zones, and other select stations, at 7pmET.

Update: the alarm incident was covered on “Today” and “Morning Joe,” video after the jump.
