Herman Cain Cancels Dinner with Matt Lauer, Bill O’Reilly, Barbara Walters and Greta Van Susteren

GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain–who is said to be reassessing his campaign–canceled dinner with a bevy of New York media bigwigs scheduled for Sunday, according to NY1.

Among the attendees: Fox News hosts Bill O’Reilly and Greta Van Susteren (Van Susteren’s husband John Coale organized the meeting), NBC’s Matt Lauer, ABC’s Barbara Walters, CBS’ Lesley Stahl and Senator Chuck Schumer.

Eliot Spitzer Returns to Cable News

Eliot Spitzer was a part of Dylan Ratigan‘s MegaPanel on his MSNBC show this afternoon. This was Spitzer’s first second appearance on the cable news channel (he was on “Up with Chris Hayes” Oct. 29) since his own CNN show was canceled in July. Ratigan:

Our specialist today is former New York Governor and Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer, who, by the way, was our first guest many years ago and it’s a pleasure to welcome you back.

Before he took the hosting job at CNN, Spitzer often filled in on MSNBC.

Former ‘CBS Evening News’ Producer Dick Meyer Tapped to lead BBC News, America

The BBC has tapped former CBS news producer and executive Dick Meyer as its executive producer of BBC News, America. Meyer was most recently executive editor of NPR, and before that led CBSNews.com. He was also a producer for the “CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.”

Meyer will be tasked with expanding the BBC’s newsgathering reach stateside, and will oversee “BBC World news America” and the U.S. edition of BBC.com/news. he begins in February.

“I am honoured and humbled by this new responsibility,” said Meyer in a statement. “The BBC is simply the greatest newsgathering operation in the world today. As American news organizations undergo difficult change, the BBC has an important role in this country and a real opportunity for growth. I am proud to have the chance to help with that important work.”

Cable Networks Cover Conrad Murray Sentencing

Shortly after 12:3opmET this afternoon, Dr. Conrad Murray was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the 2009 death of Michael Jackson.

HLN, which has seen ratings success with its Murray trial coverage, was the first cable network to go to the sentencing, at 12:14pmET.

Fox News Channel, CNN and MSNBC all went to the trial just before the sentence was read, at 12:30pmET, and stayed with it until just before 1pmET. CNN International also simulcast CNN coverage of the sentencing.

Casey Anthony Trial Most Searched News Story of 2011

Microsoft’ search engine Bing posted a story about the news stories that generated the most searches in 2011. Not surprisingly, there seems to be a correlation between these stories and TV news ratings surrounding them.

The number one news story of 2011 according to Bing? The Casey Anthony Trial. The trial generated boffo ratings for HLN and CNN, and boosted the ratings of MSNBC and Fox News as well.
