Brian Williams anchored both Saturday and Sunday “Nightly News” from the Tower of London. The broadcasts were sandwiched between daytime and primetime Olympics programming each day.

Saturday “Nightly” had its best total viewer delivery since February 13, 2010 (Vancouver Olympics) and best A25-54 rating since August 16, 2008 (Beijing Olympics).

Sunday “Nightly” had its best total viewer delivery since February 12, 2006 (Torino Olympics), and best A25-54 rating since February 12, 2006 (Torino Olympics).

Total Viewers:

“Current is like the g-spot of television – it may be hard to find but once you find it, there’s nothing better,” Behar said. “On the show, I hope to cut through all of the white noise from other news and analysis shows and encourage talk, and not talking points. There’ll be no agenda other than to entertain, inform and make sure my hair always looks great.”

Behar had hosted a nightly talk show on HLN, but it was canceled in November. Current TV announced her hiring in June.

July 2012 Ratings: News Programs, ‘The Five’ Lead Fox To July Win

As usual, Fox News placed first among cable news channels in July. Compared to July 2011, FNC managed to be up +4% in total viewers, while it declined -7% in the A25-54 demographic in total day. In primetime, the network is down -4% in Total Viewers and -22% in A25-54 viewers.

The ratings for July, 2012:

Primetime (Mon-Sun): 1.717M Total Viewers / 327,000 A25-54

Total Day (Mon-Sun): 1.070M Total Viewers / 251,000 A25-54

The strongest perforsmers for Fox this month was its news programs “America’s Newsroom,” “Happening Now,” ‘America Live” and “Studio B.” All of them were up in total and demo viewers compared to the same month last year. Given the big news month, punctuated by the tragedy in Colorado, that should not be surprising.

Another winner was “The Five,” which has grown to become a top five show on cable news. It was up +34% in total viewers and +33% in the demo, and had its best month ratings-wise since it launched a year ago.

While dayside was strong, Fox News was down significantly in primetime in both total and demo viewers.

FNC had the top 13 programs in cable news in total viewers, and the top nine in the demo.

July 2012 Ratings: Dayside Shows Strongest For MSNBC

MSNBC continued its run as the #2 cable news network in July, second to Fox News in both total day and primetime. Despite a big news month, MSNBC was still down in both dayparts compared to last year, however.

The ratings for July, 2012:

Primetime (Mon-Sun): 713,000 Total Viewers / 221,000 A25-54

Total Day (Mon-Sun): 432,000 Total Viewers / 142,000 A25-54

July was a big news month, led by the tragedy in Colorado, and ending with the Olympics. MSNBC had some live Olympics programming at the end of the month, which slightly affected the monthly numbers in the network’s favor. In Total Day, MSNBC was down -3% in Total Viewers and down -11% in the A25-54 demo compared to July 2011 (with Ol;ympics excluded, MSNBC is down -6% in total viewers and -17% in the demo). In primetime, the network was down -5% in Total Viewers and -11% in the demo.

Some highlights for MSNBC included 12 PM show “Now with Alex Wagner,” “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” “NewsNation” and “Martin Bashir,” all of which improved on their July 2011 ratings in total viewers. “The Last Word” also improved in both total and demo viewers compared to last year. That said, those shows were down slightly in the demo.

On the other side of the coin: “Rachel Maddow” and “The Ed Show” were down compared to 2011, and the new 3 PM show “The Cycle” clearly has some work to do, and is down double digits compared to “Dylan Ratigan” a year earlier.

July 2012 Ratings: CNN Continues to Struggle

CNN was down double digits across the board in July. Compared to July 2011, the network is -20% in Total Viewers and -23% in A25-54 in Total Day. In primetime, CNN is down -23% in Total Viewers and -26% in the demographic.

The ratings for July 2012:

Primetime (Mon-Sun): 488,000 Total Viewers / 149,000 A25-54

Total Day (Mon-Sun): 355,000 Total Viewers / 109,000 A25-54

Compared to the July 2011, Erin Burnett‘s 7pm hour — home last year to “John King USA” — is down -21% in both Total Viewers and younger viewers. “Piers Morgan Tonight” is down -18% in Total Viewers and -24% in A25-54 viewers. The 10pm edition of “Anderson Cooper 360″ is down -34% in Total Viewers and -36% in A25-54 viewers.

There is some good news for CNN in the 8pm hour of “AC360,” which is up +6% in the demographic and is the only cable news program in primetime to increase among younger viewers year-over-year.

Compared to last month, all of CNN’s daytime and primetime programs are up by double digits in both Total Viewers and A25-54 viewers. Burnett is up +12% in Total Viewers and +15% in the demographic, Cooper is up +27% in Total Viewers and +31% in the demographic, and Morgan is up +18% and +20%, respectively.

July 2012 Ratings: HLN Down Across the Board

Cable news networks were mostly down in July, and HLN was no exception. The network was down across the board compared to July 2011, which saw heavy coverage of the Casey Anthony trial.

The ratings for July 2012:

Primetime (Mon-Sun): 318,000 Total Viewers / 115,000 A25-54

Total Day (Mon-Sun): 245,000 Total Viewers / 101,000 A25-54

Last year, coverage of the Anthony trial led HLN to its best-rated month ever, which explains the severe year-over-year losses for July 2012: the network is down -65% and -56% in A25-54 viewers in Total Day. In primetime, losses are even worse: -68% in Total Viewers and -61% in the demographic.

Guy Adams Gets His Twitter Back, as He Does LIVE Interview on CNN

Guy Adams, a reporter in the Los Angeles bureau of the British paper The Independent just finished up an interview on CNN.

To get you up to speed, Twitter suspended Adams’ account after he Tweeted the corporate email address of NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel. Adams is among the vocal critics of NBC’s tape delayed broadcast of the Opening Ceremony as well as major events, airing them in primetime instead.

As the interview was underway, CNN had a “just in” banner, announcing that Adams had gotten his Twitter account back.

Adams told CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin he has “quite good reason” to suspect that Twitter suspended his account, “because they have a commercial relationship with NBC.”

“They wanted to give NBC special treatment,” he added, saying he still hasn’t been given a full explanation of why he was suspended. “I didn’t share someone’s private e-mail address. I didn’t share the address of their house. I didn’t share their phone number,” he says. “Online bullying is a serious thing and I wouldn’t want to share any information that could lead to anything that might represent a physical threat to anyone, at least of all an executive for NBC.”

As Adams was doing his LIVE interview on CNN, MSNBC was airing LIVE field hockey action: Team U.S.A. vs. Argentina.

Compared to the week leading up to the Beijing games four years ago, “Nightly” improved +10% in total Viewers and +1% in younger viewers.

And, once again, the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” is showing the most improvement: +9% in Total Viewers and +8% in A25-54 viewers compared to the same week last year.

“Nightly” also wins the July sweep (numbers after the jump) with a nearly +600,000 viewer lead on “World News” and a 2 million lead on “Evening News.”

Is Hoda Kotb An Emergency ‘Today’ Olympics Replacement? In A Word: No

The New York Daily News splashed NBC “Today” anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on its front page this morning, featuring a story about the pair prominently on page three. The story claims that NBC was not pleased with Guthrie’s performance last week on “Today,” and is flying in Kotb to help bolster the show as a result. It also claims that the decision to send Kotb was made last Thursday, and that she was supposed to be on vacation this week.

But “they’re just shoehorning her into the show to help bring it alive,” the source added. “They called Hoda on Thursday begging her to go to London because they said it wasn’t working like they thought.”

There is just one little problem with the story: Kotb was always supposed to be contributing to NBC’s Olympics coverage in London. Kotb and her fourth-hour co-host Kathie Lee Gifford even talked the upcoming trip on “Today” almost two weeks ago. You can watch the video below.

Update: An NBC News spokesperson tells me:

“It is well-known that Hoda was traveling to London to participate in the TODAY show’s Olympic coverage because we announced it on our show three weeks ago. She planned to spend a few days in London covering fun Olympic stories, and she talked about it on the show several times. In fact, we started a well-publicized Facebook campaign on July 9 asking viewers for suggestions on what types of stories she should do at the Games. Hoda will be in London through this Thursday.”

As references, on July 9, Facebook fans of the fourth hour could vote on what Kotb should do when she goes to the Olympics.

They announced the contest–and the fact that Kotb would be going–on July 10. Video of that is after the jump:

Robin Roberts to Take Next Few Weeks Off as Chemotherapy Takes Toll

Robin Roberts left “Good Morning America” this morning just as the second hour began, announcing, “I’m not feeling too well.” She’ll be taking off the rest of this week and the next two weeks, part of which was a planned vacation, as she continues grueling chemotherapy procedures ahead of a bone marrow transplant expected in October.

In April, Roberts was diagnosed with MDS, a blood disorder that can occur in patients treated for other cancers. Roberts beat breast cancer in 2007.

Roberts made the announcement at 8:08: “A full disclosure here. I’m not feeling too well. I’m going to leave and let you do the rest of the program on your own. I’m going to take a little time off to get some vaca!”

George Stephanopoulos is off this week, so Josh Elliott has been co-anchoring while Amy Robach has been news reader. It was announced at TCA last week that Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, Katie Couric and Kelly Ripa would be among Roberts’ fill-ins when she goes on medial leave later this summer.

The Ticker: Conventions, Schiller, CNBC

ABC News, Univision and National Journal will be partnering at the 2012 Republican and Democratic National Conventions on a pair of events called “Next America.” George Stephanopoulos, Diane Sawyer, Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas will moderate a number of panels “engaging leaders on the demographic revolution that is remaking the face of America.”

NBC News chief digital officer Vivian Schiller talks to Nieman Journalism Lab. “I’m a big believer in test-and-learn model of innovation. We’re trying stuff. We’re trying lots and lots of stuff and you know going in some of it’s going to work, some of it isn’t going to work. Hey, if things don’t work, as long as you figure out quickly and stop doing them. The whole fail-fast philosophy. We want to try a lot of things.”

A lesson in the perils of RSS feeds: yesterday CNBC had a story on its site for a number of hours touting Lou Dobbs‘ ratings win over Larry Kudlow. CNBC’s website automatically picks up some press releases off of the wire in certain categories, creating article pages. It has since been taking down.
