NBC Dropping Hillary Clinton Miniseries

abc_hillary_clinton_nightline_interview_lpl_130129_mnThe same day that CNN confirmed that its documentary about former First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would not be moving forward, NBC says it too is canceling its plans for a scripted miniseries about her life.

“After reviewing and prioritizing our slate of movie/mini-series development, we’ve decided that we will no longer continue developing the Hillary Clinton mini-series,” NBC said in a statement.

The miniseries was slated to air next year, with Diane Lane starring as Clinton. NBC was in advanced negotiations with Fox TV Studios to produce the series, but after those talks fell through, its future was up in the air.

The Clinton miniseries and film were the impetus behind an RNC effort to lock out CNN and NBC from hosting any 2016 GOP primary debates. The RNC voted to block those networks from hosting debates back in August, citing “an obvious bias.”

The RNC’s plan is to limit and control the number of 2016 debates. While both CNN and NBC insist that the RNC had no impact on their decisions, the organization will nonetheless be getting its preferred outcome.

Now the question becomes what the RNC’s preferred 2016 debate plan is, and whether CNN or NBC will be included.

Networks Offer Special Reports As President Comments On Possible Government Shutdown

President Obama gave a brief statement this afternoon as the threat of a government shutdown loomed over Washington. The President began by listing off what agencies would continue to operate and which would not.

“I think it is important for everyone to understand that the federal government is the country’s largest employer,” Obama said. “A shutdown will have a very real economic impact on real people, right away.

“Past shutdowns have disrupted the economy significantly, it would throw a wrench in the gears of the economy, just as those gears get traction,” he added. “All of this is entirely preventable if the House chooses to do what the Senate has already done.”

NBC, ABC and CBS all broke in with special reports, with comprehensive coverage on cable news.

HLN Anchor Kyra Phillips Honored

KyraPhillips2HLN anchor Kyra Phillips received the Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award for her support of those with disabilities Saturday night at a gala event in Denver. Phillips and husband, Fox News anchor John Roberts also emceed the event which supports the Global Down Syndrome Foundation.

Phillips has been an advocate for those with disabilities for more than 20 years, beginning when she was a local TV news reporter and met a young man named Jimmy who was competing in the Wisconsin Special Olympics. She later became a spokesperson for the group. Last week, as part of her HLN show “Raising America,” Phillips set up a call to action for awareness and penned this article on Huffington Post.

During the gala, NFL hall-of-famer Eric Dickerson, model Beverly Johnson, and actor John C. McGinley (pictured, above, with Phillips) walked the runway along with 20 models with Down syndrome at the “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself Fashion Show.”

In the gallery below, Phillips is pictured with Deondra Dixon, an ambassador of the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, and the sister of actor Jamie Foxx.

Gretchen Carlson Welcomes Viewers To ‘The Real Story’

This afternoon at 2 PM, Fox news debuted the first of its new programs, “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson.”

Carlson takes over one of the hours vacated by Megyn Kelly, who launches her new show “The Kelly File” next week.

“I am from the Midwest, my parents were great role models who taught me core values and humility,” Carlson said at the top of the program. “I may live in New York now, but I am still a Midwestern girl at heart, and I want the show to reach out to all viewers coast to coast. Genuine, authentic and real. I hope you will see all those qualities every day.”

CNN Taps Geraldine Moriba As VP of Diversity

moribaCNN has named Geraldine Moriba VP of diversity and inclusion at the company, and she will become the chairperson of  its diversity council. Moriba will report on diversity and inclusion issues directly to CNN president Jeff Zucker.

“Geraldine is the ideal candidate to take on this very important role within the organization at a critical time for us,” said Zucker in a statement. “I had the pleasure of working with her prior to my time at CNN, and always found her to have a terrific sensibility and understanding of some of the complex issues we face when it comes to diversity and inclusion.  As we look to reimagine what CNN will be in the years to come, this role on my team will be invaluable in shaping the kind of organization we want and need to have.”

Moriba is also an executive producer for CNN’s Original Program Development, where she oversaw the “In America” documentary team. She will remain in that role, reporting to senior VP of talent and content development Amy Entelis. Before joining CNN she spent more than 16 years at NBC News, working in broadcast standards and serving as co-chair of its diversity council.

As we reported last week, the current chairperson of the CNN Diversity Council, Johnita Due, is stepping aside from that role but will remain with CNN as assistant general counsel. She will also continue to advise the Council.

Do the Media ‘Fan the Fire’ Of Washington Chaos?

So, the U.S. government will probably shut down tonight. Who’s to blame? Congress? Yes. The White House? Yes. The media? Probably.

Countdown clocks crowd TV screens as cable news channels talk their way to Midnight, when the shutdown would begin. CNN is reminding viewers, via an on screen banner, about a poll they have taken. Those questioned think “shutdown a bad idea.” Ya think?

In an interview with FNC’s Bill O’Reilly this morning, Matt Lauer got introspective wondering if the media “fan the fire” and play up these seemingly never-ending political crises.

What do you think?

CNN Renews ‘Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown’ For Season Three

BourdainCNNCNN has ordered a third season of “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.”

The travel docu-series is currently in the midst of season two, where it has been performing very well for CNN, particularly in the 18-49 and 25-54 demographics. While some other acquired programs have done ok, it is the only one so far to have built any sort of dedicated audience.

Season three will air in Spring, 2014 with Brazil, Las Vegas and an African safari on tap as destinations. Brazil will be hosting the 2014 World Cup starting next June.

“We had high expectations for this series when it launched back in April, thanks to Tony and Zero Point Zero Production’s proven track record of success,” said Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide in a statement. “Yet they keep raising the bar – first with the spectacular series premiere in Myanmar, later in the season with the groundbreaking Libya episode, and then at the start of season two with a sensitive and incredibly informative tour of Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank. ‘Parts Unknown’ is a consistent ratings and critical success and we are so proud to be in partnership with Tony and ZPZ.”
