April 2014 Ratings: CNN #2 in Total Day, Primetime Demo for Second Straight Month

For April 2014, CNN rose to number two in total day viewers, and placed second in the total day and primetime demo category for the second consecutive month. The network remained in third place in primetime total viewers behind MSNBC.

The ratings for April 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 532,000 Total Viewers / 191,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 420,000 Total Viewers / (134,000 A25-54

Compared to the same month last year, CNN is down double digits across the board:-34% in viewers and -41% in the demo for total day and -42% in both primetime measurements. All of the big three cable news networks are down compared to the same time period last year, when the networks covered the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing.

In primetime, “Anderson Cooper 360″ was down -46% in total viewers and -49% in the A25-54 demographic compared to April 2013. “Outfront with Erin Burnett” was down -47% in total viewers and -49% in demo viewers. Both programs ranked #2 in the primetime demo.

CNN’s morning show, “New Day” ranked as the #2 morning show in both total and demo viewers.

April 2014 Ratings: MSNBC Third in Total Day

MSNBC slipped to third in total day this month, delivering its lowest average in nearly seven years — since October 2007. In primetime, the network managed to hang on to second place in total viewers, but placed third  in the A25-54 demographic.

The ratings for April 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 612,000 Total Viewers / 173,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 356,000 Total Viewers / 112,000 A25-54

Compared to the same month last year, MSNBC was down -12% in total viewers and -19% in A25-54 viewers in total day. In primetime, the network was down -10% and -26%, respectively. Although April 2013 was a busy news month with the Boston Marathon bombings, MSNBC did not see much of a bump this time last year.

MSNBC’s daytime programming struggled in April.  The newest daytime programs — “Ronan Farrow Daily” and “The Reid Report” — have so far failed to move the ratings needle. Farrow’s program averaged 238,000 total viewers and 67,000 A25-54 viewers and Joy Reid‘s averaged 266,000 and 72,000, respectively; in total viewers, it was the lowest rated month in the 1pmET timeslot since 2007 and in the 2pmET timeslot since 2010.

“Morning Joe” slipped to third among the cable news morning shows in April, delivering its lowest-rated month in total viewers since December 2009.

All three of MSNBC’s primetime shows were down across the board compared to April 2013: “All In with Chris Hayes” was down -7% in total viewers and -27% in the demo, “The Rachel Maddow Show” was down -4% in total viewers and -32% int the demo, and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” was down -19% and -33%, respectively.

April 2014 Ratings: A Year After Jodi Arias Trial, HLN Down Double Digits

hln logo_304x200A year after the final weeks of the Jodi Arias trial gave HLN a ratings boost, the network saw double-digit losses across the board in April 2014.

The ratings for April 2014:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 333,000  total viewers / 127,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 234,000 total viewers / 96,000 A25-54

Compared to April 2013, when the network was in wall-to-wall Arias trial coverage, HLN is down -40% in total viewers and -32% in A25-54 demo viewers for total day. In primetime, they are down -36% in total viewers and -28% in the demo.

Forensic Filesled the way for HLN, drawing 328,000 total viewers and 146,000 demo viewers.

Greta Van Susteren Has Some Free Legal Advice for Donald Sterling

Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren put on her legal hat last night to give embattled Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling legal advice following his lifetime ban from the NBA.

“Mr. Sterling, give it a rest…it’s over, jigs up, get out, pay the fine, sell the Clippers as soon as you can,” Van Susteren said, adding that Sterling shouldn’t needlessly drown himself in endless litigation when he’s already “exposed himself as being a racist.”

She also suggested for him to spare us all, and come out tomorrow with a team for sale sign.

NBC Reports Incorrect Information Ahead of Donald Sterling Suspension Announcement

Before NBA commissioner Adam Silver took to the podium to announce a fine and lifetime ban for Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling Tuesday, NBC News Tweeted incorrect information about the fine, quoting a senior NBA official.

NBC reported Sterling would be fined $5 million. Instead, he was fined $2.5 million. Here’s the Tweet:

“Our initial reporting was shy of what Silver ultimately decided,” NBC’s David Gregory said at the end of a NBC News special report.

Savannah Guthrie Dreamt She Kissed a Colleague; Matt Lauer Hates the Orange Couch

TodaySet1It’s National Honesty Day, honestly. So this morning the “Today” show anchors revealed a truth they’ve been keeping secret. “I had a dream that I kissed a member of the ‘Today’ show cast who shall remain nameless,” Savannah Guthrie admitted. “Male or female?” Al Roker asked. Guthrie said male, but left it at that.

“Mine’s a simple one,” said Matt Lauer. “I hate the orange couch.” Natalie Morales and Savannah piled on: “I hate it too! …we don’t like it either. “ ”It drives me crazy every time i sit down,” Lauer said. As for Al Roker, he admitted that he’s a “shy person.”

“You were not all that shy when Savannah was kissing you in your dream,” said Lauer.

Something tells me “Today” will be skipping National Honesty Day next April 30.

NBC Dedicates Brokaw News Center in Honor of Longtime NBC News Man

BrokawWilliamsLA

His name is synonymous with NBC News. Now, Tom Brokaw‘s name is etched in granite at NBC’s new West Coast operations. NBC dedicated the Brokaw News Center today as the new home of the 150,000-square-foot, 2-building complex on the Universal lot. It’s the home of NBC News in Los Angeles, NBC station KNBC, Telemundo station KVEA, MSNBC and CNBC.

“This is a singular honor and I am so grateful to Steve Burke and the Comcast team for making it possible,” said Brokaw. “I still remember the day I drove into the NBC News Burbank parking lot and thought, ‘My life is about to change.’ I had just turned 26 and now, almost a half century later, indeed it has changed in ways I could not have imagined.” Brokaw was an anchor and reporter for KNBC from 1966-1973 before joining NBC News and later anchoring “Today” and, for 22 years, “NBC Nightly News.”

“I’m an NBC News lifer and very proud of it,” Brokaw says. “None of this would have been possible without the support of the producers, cameramen, technicians and office staff who were always there for me. They’re like family and this honor belongs to them as well. So I accept this recognition with gratitude, humility and pride.”

NBC moved from its longtime home in Burbank to the Universal lot over the last several months. Brokaw joins NBCUniversal icons Abbott and Costello, Alfred Hitchcock, Carl Laemmle, and Steven Spielberg in having various buildings and streets on the Universal Studios lot named after them.
