Dateline’s “Personal, Unobtrusive” Documentary

Slepian_8.4.jpgNYTimes reporter Brian Stelter (yes, THAT Brian Stelter) writes about tomorrow night’s feature length documentary on NBC. “It is unusual for network television, and not just because of its length.” Stelter writes. “Unlike a typical ‘Dateline’ segment, ‘In the Shadow of Justice’ feels highly personal, told without narration, mostly through the nearly 300 hours shot by (producer Dan) Slepian (at right, in photo, with his documentary subject, David Lemus). Slepian began editing the project on his laptop, then worked with Dateline editor Rob Allen to complete the documentary.

Dateline EP David Corvo says, “Being unobtrusive and having Dan be by himself probably opened a lot of doors that a three-man crew would have definitely closed.”
