Capus, McManus Comment on Reporters' Editorializing

engellogan10-14.jpgThe L.A. Times takes a more in depth look at the opinions expressed last week by NBC's Richard Engel and CBS' Lara Logan regarding the war in Afghanistan. In the article, the correspondents' bosses, NBC News President Steve Capus and CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus, responded to the comments:

Steve Capus said he "fully supported" his star correspondent, but he also said he called Engel to "quiz" him about the provocative interviews. "I said he has so much to offer in terms of straight reporting and analysis," Capus said, "that I want him to stick to that."

...

Sean McManus...said he felt Logan's many experiences in the war zone entitled her to offer an occasional opinion as long as they didn't show up in her news pieces. He hasn't talked to the network's chief foreign affairs correspondent about the issue but told me: "I think she understands this was, if not a one-time-only occasion, a very, very rare occasion. And there's no plan for her to do it again."
