Gupta To Be Obama’s Surgeon General?
The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz is reporting Sanjay Gupta has been offered the job of Surgeon General in the Obama administration, and he “has told administration officials that he wants the job.”
Gupta declined comment when contacted by Kurtz.
At the beginning of CNN’s Situation Room today, John King and Wolf Blitzer discussed the matter. According to King’s sources, “He is inclined to accept the position very soon.”
King also read a statement on the air from CNN: “Since first learning that Dr. Gupta was under consideration for the Surgeon General position, CNN made sure his on air reporting has been on health and wellness matters, not on healthcare policy or any matters concerning the new administration.”
“Gupta’s only hesitation in taking the post is said to involve the financial impact on his pregnant wife and two children if he gives up his lucrative medical and journalistic careers,” writes Kurtz. “But he is expected to accept the position within days.”
Gupta also contributes to the CBS Evening News.
