Mara Schiavocampo Joins ABC News

SCHIAVOCAMPO_Publicity StillAs we reported in December, Mara Schiavocampo is joining ABC as a New York-based correspondent. Schiavocampo spent six years at NBC before signing off in December.

“Mara is a dynamic storyteller and skilled journalist who has covered nearly every major news story in the past decade,” ABC News president Ben Sherwood wrote in a note to ABC News staff this morning.

It is a return to ABC News for Schiavocampo, who previously worked as a desk assistant for radio and a producer for “ABC News Now.”

Sherwood’s note is after the jump.

I’m thrilled to announce that Mara Schiavocampo is joining ABC News as a New York-based correspondent reporting for all platforms.

Mara joins us from NBC News where she reported for all broadcasts and was an anchor of “Early Today” on the NBC network and “First Look” on MSNBC.

Mara is a dynamic storyteller and skilled journalist who has covered nearly every major news story in the past decade. During the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers, Mara anchored for five straight hours as news broke that suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during a shootout with Watertown police.

Mara’s reporting has been recognized with several honors, including an Emmy for her coverage of the 2008 Presidential Election. In 2007, she was the only broadcast journalist to receive the National Association of Black Journalists’ “Emerging Journalist of the Year” Award.

Mara holds dual Italian American citizenship, and has traveled and lived all over the world, including Somalia, Italy and the Philippines. A self-described “animal lover,” Mara, along with her husband and daughter, have opened their home to rescue animals over the years.

Mara got her start in journalism right here at ABC News as a desk assistant for Radio in 2001 and as a producer for “ABC News Now” in 2004.

Please join me in giving Mara a warm welcome back to ABC News.
