More People Watched BCS Title Game on Cable Than Anything, Ever

Auburn wasn’t the only winner in Monday night’s BCS Championship Game. ESPN scored massive ratings. In fact, the game was the most-watched show in the history of cable television.(That’s not official yet, but it will be after the full national ratings are released.)

The telecast earned a 16.1 overnight, which was actually down 12 percent from last year’s Alabama-Texas tilt but was still good enough to break the cable record of 14.4 set during a New England Patriots-New Orleans Saints game in 2009. It earned a remarkable 67.0 in Birmingham, AL and a 37.5 in Portland, OR.

ESPN would also like you to know that more than 619,000 unique viewers watched the game on ESPN3.com.

Not too shabby for the Worldwide Leader in its first year of broadcasting the Bowl Championship Series.

After the jump, a handy chart from Sports Media Watch showing the ratings from previous years.
