It's official: MSNBC primetime VP Phil Griffin has been named senior vice president of NBC News, and the executive-in-charge of 'Today.' "This is a homecoming of sorts for me," Griffin says in the press release.

In a memo to MSNBC staff minutes ago, Rick Kaplan called it a "wonderful opportunity for Phil." "I will soon announce the selection of an interim Primetime Manager until we are secure in our planning as to just how to fill those big Griffin shoes," Kaplan said. I come to you this day with bittersweet news...with the announcement that "everyone's Buddy," Phil Griffin, will be leaving us. Bittersweet in the fact that Phil has been at the core of all that is good and right about MSNBC from the first day the doors opened and replacing him is a daunting task. That said, how wonderful is it that he is being recognized for his skill and dedication in being asked to take the job of Executive in Charge of the Today Show! This is a wonderful opportunity for Phil and a great move for NBC News...and how much are we cheering 'cause an MSNBCer is movin' up!

We have so much to do in the coming months and Phil will help us in the transition. I will soon announce the selection of an interim Primetime Manager until we are secure in our planning as to just how to fill those big Griffin shoes.
