Age Of Anchorwomen? "It's About Time"
David Zurawik's Baltimore Sun headline is "Move over, mister; Women are rising as anchors, stars."
Is this "the dawning of the age of anchorwomen?" He quotes Marguerite Moritz, a professor of journalism at the University of Colorado specializing in depictions of gender, who says the courting of Katie Couric could be a harbinger of genuine change: "Fundamentally, that conversation is going on for economic reasons. There's some hard number crunching being done and executives at CBS saying, 'Look, she's been a huge success in the morning slot, maybe she can help us at night -- even though we've always had a man as the face of CBS News.' I don't know if that's empowerment for women, but I'm certainly happy to see it happen. It's about time." Email This Post |
