Nightline Beats Leno, Letterman With Obama Interview

Helped by Terry Moran‘s interview with Sen. Barack Obama, the first since his race relations speech yesterday, ABC’s Nightline beat The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman last night.

In the 56 metered markets, the biggest in the U.S., Nightline averaged a 4.0/9 household rating/share, compared to a 3.9/10 for Leno and a 2.5/6 for Letterman.

Obama has been a big ratings draw recently, as evidenced by his highly-rated interview on FNC’s Hannity and Colmes on Friday. Tonight, he’s on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360.

According to Nielsen Media Research in metered markets for March 18, 2008, ABC News’ exclusive interview with Barack Obama which aired first on “Nightline” beat “Leno” and “Letterman” in the metered markets.

ABC’s “Nightline” averaged a 4.0/9 household rating/share among the 56 metered markets which flew past “Leno” 3.9/10 and “Letterman” 2.5/6. Compared to the prior four week time period average, “Nightline” is up 18% among households.

Among the 13 Local People Metered Markets, in the key A25-54 demo, “Nightline” delivered a 2.1/8, which ranked #1 compared to “Leno” 1.6/7 and “Letterman” 0.7/3. Compared to the prior four week time period average, “Nightline” is up 11% in the key demo.

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
