After on-air apology, Glenn Beck writes to ADL’s Abraham Foxman

Following his on-air apology yesterday for remarks he made Tuesday morning, Glenn Beck wrote to the Anti-Defamation League’s national director Abraham Foxman to apologize again.

On Tuesday’s radio show, Beck compared rabbis of Reform Judaism to radical Islam. Yesterday, he called it one of the “worst analogies of all time.” But he did add, “I don’t agree with Abe Foxman… on anything… but on this one he’s right.”

“Glenn Beck has shown that he understands how his remarks were offensive and out of line,” says Foxman. “We welcome his words of apology and consider the matter closed.”

Beck to Foxman: “I blew it on this one…” (Letter after the jump)

ADL: Glenn Beck should apologize for linking Reform Judaism to radical Islam

The Anti-Defamation League is calling on radio talk show and Fox News host Glenn Beck to apologize for comments he made on his radio show yesterday.

Beck’s point was that rabbis of Reform Judaism are more political than they are religious.

“It’s almost like Islam … radicalized Islam in a way,” said Beck. “Radicalized Islam is less about religion than it is about politics. When you look at the Reform Judaism, it is more about politics.”

ADL National Director Abraham Foxman, says Beck’s comment, “demonstrates his bigoted ignorance.” More:

Despite his feeble attempt to suggest that he was not equating Reform Judaism with Islamic extremist terrorism, the simple fact that he would mention them in the same breath is highly offensive and outrageous. Glenn Beck has no business discounting the faith of any people, and he should think twice before commenting on something he doesn’t know much about. He owes the Reform movement an apology.

No comment from the Beck camp today, but TVNewser has learned Beck will address it on his radio show tomorrow.

Fareed Zakaria to Return ADL Award After Mosque Flap

Zakaria_8.9.jpgOn his CNN show this weekend, Fareed Zakaria announced he was returning an award he’d received from the Anti-Defamation League over their stand on the mosque battle in New York City. The ADL had opposed the building of a mosque so close to ground zero in lower Manhattan. Zakaria, who was honored with the Hubert Humphrey award for first amendment freedoms five years ago says he is returning the ADL’s award.

Given the position that they have taken on a core issue of religious freedom in America, I cannot in good conscience keep that award. So this week I’m going to return to the ADL the handsome medal and the generous honorarium that came with it. I hope this might spur them to see that they have made a mistake and to return to their historic robust defense of freedom of religion in America, something they have subscribed to for decades and which I honor them for.

The ADL’s national director Abraham Foxman wrote a letter to Zakaria saying he was “not only saddened but stunned and somewhat speechless” by his decision to return the award.
