Carlson is a cable news veteran, having served as a host on both CNN and MSNBC.

TVNewser has learned Briggs’ contract came to an end by mutual consent. Prior to joining Fox, Briggs was a sports anchor and host for Comcast SportsNet New England and before that anchored at WHDH in Boston and KOKI in Tulsa. Briggs’ first job in TV was at KEVN in Rapid City.

On his radio program, which is distributed by Fox News Radio, Kilmeade was talking to colleague and fellow Fox News host Alisyn Camerota, when he attempted to joke about how the network recruits its female talent.

“It was actually, we go into the Victoria’s Secret catalog and we said, ‘Can any of these people talk?’ And they all could and they all went to college”.

Camerota laughed off the joke, saying “You’re crazy Brian.”

Don Lemon jetted up from Atlanta to co-host with Velez-Mitchell, who mixed and mingled before making a beeline for Time Warner Center herself to participate in the town hall.

Velez-Mitchell made the biggest splash of the night when, during her welcome remarks to the crowd, she pulled her girlfriend on stage and planted a big kiss on her. “I won’t be doing that!” Lemon joked. “Ben doesn’t like that kind of thing,” he said glancing over to his partner, Ben Tinker, who is a producer in CNN’s medical unit.

CNN managing editor Mark Whitaker talked about his network’s commitment to diversity in the ranks and on the air. CNN was the lead sponsor for the event which was held at the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams showroom in SoHo.

Also spotted in the crowd: NBC News VP Alex Wallace, former “Today” show co-anchor Meredith Vieira, “CBS This Morning” co-host Erica Hill, MSNBC’s Willie Geist, former MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer and Fox News meteorologist Rick Reichmuth.

Everyone was excited this morning about NASA firing that rocket into the moon. The cablers and network morning shows carried NASA’s live feed and the event had been teased for days. CBS’ “Early Show” host Harry Smith said, “It’s happening right now. In fact, we have video of this morning’s mission … we’re pumped up about this.”

But the footage was not quite as exciting as we’d perhaps expected. Instead of a Roland Emmerich-style explosion, the feed showed some shots of the moon followed by a black screen followed by the NASA people clapping.

FNC’s Brian Kilmeade asked: “What did we just see? Do you think we just saw the dust plume?” His “Fox & Friends” co-host Alisyn Camerota added, “We see everybody standing and clapping. It seems as though NASA considers this a success, what’s just happened.”

Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” added, “The visuals were better back [in 1969]… Did I miss something? I didn’t actually see anything. On “GMA,” Diane Sawyer described it as “The NASA equivalent of bars and tone.”

On NBC’s “Today” show, Matt Lauer was particularly disappointed: “I guess people were expecting some major plume of something visible to the human eye. I’m not seeing that.” He later interviewed Dr. Michio Kaku, author of “Physics of the Impossible”:

Lauer: We were told that with a fairly large telescope here on earth, you’d be able to see this. Yet, we’re looking at images coming from that trailing satellite, and I can’t see anything. This is a little surprising.

Dr. Kaku: Uhh.. yeah.

While it seemed disappointing for both tvnewsers and the audience at home, it must have been much worse for the people attending watch-parties. Brianna Keilar was live at the Newseum for CNN’s “American Morning” where people gathered to watch the event on a 40-foot high-def screen. Afterward she reported on the exuberant reaction:

The first [moment] where the initial image went blank, there was a — sort of a hushed “ah” and then light clapping.

FNC’s Claudia Cowan was at an event in California and interviewed a rather depressed looking middle-aged man dressed as Data from “Star Trek”:

Cowan: What time did you get here?

Brian/Data: I got here about 12 o’clock this morning.

Cowan: Did you see the impact just now on the big screen?

Brian/Data: They said it impacted, but I didn’t see anything.

On “The Early Show,” at least Russ Mitchell seemed to have enjoyed himself: “That is really cool stuff. Wasn’t that fun?”

PREDAWN MEETING The car comes to get me at 3:30, and I’m in my first morning meeting at 4 a.m., where the producers, anchors and I figure out what we’re going to do with our four-hour marathon show. We figure out what we like, what our talking points are going to be.

UNIFORM From 4:15 to 5, I go into hair and makeup, where they attempt to make me look presentable at that hour. I go in, in, basically, my pajamas. I’m, like, transformed in the next hour to being presentable on television. I wear whatever dress and jewelry and heels, and they do my hair and makeup.

Gibbs: I do hope the viewers of FOX will find a way to watch this speech tonight. I know the network, instead of dealing with the reality of millions of people on health insurance reform have decided to show a reality show called “So You Think You Can Dance?”

Gibbs: I do hope people will check in to the reality of what’s going on in America rather than the distraction of a reality TV show.

Later, Gibbs used the launch of Fox News Channel as an analogy for health insurance reform.

Several other Fox Newsers were in attendance including the Fox & Friends lineups of Gretchen Carlson, Brian Kilmeade and Steve Doocy, along with his son, new Fox News hire Peter Doocy. And the weekend F&F team of Alisyn Camerota, Clayton Morris and Dave Briggs. The Mets lost 3-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays during a rainy night at Citi Field. They lost a day game today, too.

After appearances on “Red Eye,” Tucker Carlson made it official this morning becoming a paid contributor to Fox News Channel. His first appearance, coming on his 40th birthday, was on Fox & Friends just after 7amET.

“Life begins at 40 and your Fox career begins at 40 too,” said co-anchor Dave Briggs.

“I’ve waited a long time to get here and I’m glad to be here,” said Carlson. “We’re delighted to have you,” added Alisyn Camerota.

Carlson, a libertarian, spent five years at CNN where he co-hosted “from the right” the long-running “Crossfire” until its cancellation. He joined MSNBC in 2005 spending three years there anchoring a one-hour show until last March. He stayed on through the election as a political contributor. About MSNBC, Carlson tells TVDecoder’s Brian Stelter, “It’s just a different network than it was when I joined, very different.”

Briggs was first to report the Carlson news on Fox & Friends Friday as the anchors promoted today’s show: “Karl Rove is here, Mike Huckabee is here, and Tucker Carlson who is coming to play for our team here at Fox News, congratulations to Tucker.”

She describes her typical day, which begins at 3:15amET, and ends about 17 hours later. “I tuck the kids in bed by 7:45, do my homework for the follow day’s show and fall into bed by 8:30. Repeat,” she says.

“Recently we had The Wiggles on our show. My children are big fans…so I brought the kids to the studio to watch them perform,” she says. “Now my daughters think I actually work with (or maybe for) The Wiggles! Every day when I come home from work, they ask about The Wiggles.”

Camerota, who recently was named the co-host of Fox & Friends Weekend, will be back on the weekdays already — she fills in for a vacationing Gretchen Carlson this week.
