The 8 PM show stays the same, but the 10 PM editions of the show will utilize a panel format through Thursday night, with Cooper serving as the host. CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour and senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin will be guests all week, as will Amy Holmes from TheBlaze. Every day there will be a different guest joining the panel as well. For Monday’s show, the guest was blogger Andrew Sullivan, a good friend of Cooper’s. Cooper, you may recall, formally “came out” as gay in a post on Sullivan’s “Daily Dish.”

CNN has been using 10 PM as a testing ground for new shows in recent weeks. First it tried out panel show “(Get To) The Point,” and then announced plans to re-run Jake Tapper’s afternoon show in the slot. The Boston bombing changed coverage around, but now the channel is back to experimenting.

One thing seems certain: the 10 PM re-run of “AC360″ will not be sticking around much longer. Whether it is replaced by a new format “AC360″ or by some other program, the channel is aggressively testing out other options there.

Update: It looks like the panel format may be worth repeating. 10 PM’s “AC360″ placed first among all the cable news channels in adults 25-54, though it remained third in total viewers.

The video shows the late Harvard Law professor Derrick Bell being introduced and embraced by Barack Obama at a rally. After playing the video and debating its merit, O’Brien asked Pollak: “If your bombshell is that Derrick Bell is a radical … is that what you’re trying to say? I’m just trying to understand what the bombshell is, because I haven’t seen a bombshell yet.”

“The bombshell is happening right here on this program,” said Pollak, “Where we have a story and you’re not interested in telling your viewers who Derrick Bell actually is.” Watch:

We are standing in GBTV’s basement studio in midtown Manhattan, not too far from the News Corp. building, where Beck held court at 5 PM on Fox News for over two years.  After Beck and FNC parted ways earlier this year, he announced the launch of his web-TV channel, the cornerstone of which would be a daily two-hour program, an extended version of his Fox News show.

The crowd is small, four media reporters, Beck and Chris Balfe, the president of Beck’s company, Mercury Radio Arts. Some staffers from the just-completed taping of Beck’s daily show are still milling around, winding up cords, dimming the lights and moving the cameras to the side of the studio.

The show itself looked nearly identical to Beck’s FNC program, though there were some technical hiccups along the way, including a TelePrompTer issue at the end of comedian Brian Sack‘s segment. Nonetheless, the show did not feel like a program on the internet. That was an intentional decision, Beck says:

Holmes contributed to CNN’s political coverage during the 2006 and 2008 elections, and has also contributed to NBC’s “Dateline and “Nightly News,” as well as ABC’s “The View.” She left as a contributor to CNN in 2009.

The hire is a big one for GBTV, which gets to add a familiar face to its programming. On CNN Holmes has also been decidedly independent–albeit often labeled as a conservative–making the hire an interesting one from a political perspective. Holmes was also a regular fill-in for Beck when he was at HLN.

With three panels going on at a time in some instances, the late afternoon saw a split of two active sessions. In a religion and politics session, CNN contributors Roland Martin and Amy Holmes joined others in the discussion. When moderator Steve Waldman introduced Martin, identifying him as from the “left,” Martin immediately countered. “That introduction is part of the problem with the religion conversation,” he said. He also had some qualms with the name of the panel, which called for a discussion of the “‘new’ new rules” of religion and politics.

Holmes, who described herself as both a “non-believer” and a “blue state girl with red state politics,” said race has been a hot issue during the campaign, but religion has been less covered. “The media loves to talk about race, but I would ask to keep your eye on the religion issue,” she said.

In another room, CNN’s Candy Crowley, former Hillary Clinton strategist Mark Penn, Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin and others were discussing the media’s performance in the 2008 campaign. The overwhelming response — not good.

“The press is suffering,” said Penn. “Now they’re seen as increasingly partisan.” Crowley was asked if “people hiss at you” on the campaign trails. “Sure, but that’s not new,” she said.

The most biting critique was Halperin’s, who moves between ABC and all the cablers regularly as an analyst. He described the “irresponsible job the press has done when given access” during this election cycle. “We’ve done a bad job,” he said.
