‘Dateline’ Tops Friday Night in Its Timeslot

dateline logo_304x200A two-hour edition of “Dateline” Friday had a strong night.

The newsmagazine drew 6.2 million viewers and 1.7 million A25-54 demo viewers, topping the broadcast networks in the 9pm-11pmET timeslot.

The episode, with Andrea Canning reporting, told the story of the murder of a Denise Leuthold, a religious missionary woman, murdered on Valentine’s Day last year. Denise’s husband, Nathan, was sentenced to 80 years in prison for her murder last week.

‘Dateline’ Cracks Top 10 in Broadcast Primetime Viewers

dateline logo_304x200For the week ending on June 1, NBC’s “Dateline” finished eighth in broadcast primetime total viewers.

7.1 million viewers tuned in on Friday, May 30, making “Dateline” the number one show in total viewers for the night; the audience was NBC’s biggest in the Friday night timeslot in two months.

Year-over-year, “Dateline” was up +18% in total viewers.  On Friday’s two-hour episode, correspondent Andrea Canning investigated the mystery behind Leslie Mueller‘s drowning, and her husband Fred’s role in the tragedy.

For the same week, fellow newsmagazine “60 Minutes” ranked #4, with 8.2 million viewers tuning in Sunday night.

The Ticker: Chicagoland, O’Brien, Canning

  • “Chicagoland” was the most-watched show on CNN Thursday, debuting in second place in the demo at 10pm on cable news, averaging 227,000 viewers. The 8-episode docuseries was third among total viewers drawing 629,000 viewers. That’s down -7% in viewers but up +58% in the demo vs. last Thursday’s CNN documentary, “And the Oscar Goes To…”

  • Miles O’Brien discusses the accident that resulted in the amputation of his left arm in an interview with Judy Woodruff, tonight on PBS NEWSHOUR. O’Brien’s accident happened during a reporting trip to Japan and the Philippines last month.

  • New mom, for the fourth time, Andrea Canning reports tonight’s hour-long “Dateline” with an exclusive interview with the parents of of murdered teen Skylar Neese. Last week, Skylar’s friend, 17-year-old Rachel Shoaf was sentenced to 30 years in prison for her role in her death.

Andrea Canning Welcomes Fourth Daughter

“Dateline” correspondent Andrea Canning and her husband, USMC Major Tony Bancroft, welcomed their fourth daughter into the world this week. Georgia Rapalje Bancroft (pictured left) was born February 27 in Greenwich, Conn.

Georgia joins four-year-old Anna, three-year-old Charlie and one-year-old Kiki (pictured right). “Four girls, four and under, is my toughest assignment yet!” Canning told Us Weekly. “We better start saving now for all the weddings in our future!”

‘Dateline’ Has Most-Watched Show All Season

Screen Shot 2013-11-30 at 9.56.38 PMLast night “Dateline NBC” had its most-watched show since the start of the 2013-2014 season in September. With 7.2 million viewers, “Dateline” won the 8pmET hour among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in total viewers and was #2 in all key demos.

The episode, “A Killing in Cobb Country,” reported by Andrea Canning had the highest ratings in the A18-49 and A25-54 demos since Oct. 25. “Dateline” was up +32% week-to-week in viewers and also up in both younger demos.

At 10pm, a “20/20″ special hosted by Barbara Walters which included a look back at her interviews with past presidents and First Ladies drew 5.04 million viewers.

NBC’s Andrea Canning Expecting Fourth Child

CanningNBCNBC News “Dateline” correspondent Andrea Canning and her husband Tony Bancroft are expecting their fourth child, due in February.

The new baby, a girl, gives the couple four daughters age four and under. Anna (age 4), Charlie (age 3) and Kiki (age 1).

Canning married Bancroft–then a U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot–in 2008. She left ABC News for NBC News last year.

Canning also secured a scoop for New York station WNBC this week, when she happened to be on the same flight as a suspect being brought back to Long Island to face murder charges.

TMZ: Chris Cuomo To Jump To CNN

ABC News “20/20″ anchor Chris Cuomo is planning to jump to CNN, according to TMZ.

The gossip site says that Cuomo will host a new morning program for the cable channel, potentially alongside Erin Burnett. Cuomo has been a stalwart at ABC since 2000, in both primetime and in the mornings, where he was the news anchor for “Good Morning America” from 2006-2009. If TMZ is correct, he would be returning to the early shift.

If Cuomo leaves it will be the third major on-air talent to leave ABC for CNN in the last year. John Berman and Jake Tapper switched to the cable network last year. Berman is currently at the anchor chair in the early mornings on the channel. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi also departed ABC for “60 Minutes Sports” earlier this month. Andrea Canning left ABC for NBC last year as well.

It’s Official: Andrea Canning Joins NBC’s ‘Dateline’ As Correspondent

As we first reported back in April, Andrea Canning is joining NBC News as a correspondent for “Dateline.” Canning will also contribute to all NBC News shows and platforms, including “Today” and “NBC Nightly News.”

“We are delighted to welcome Andrea as part of the NBC News family,” said NBC News president Steve Capus in a statement. “Andrea’s impressive body of work has quickly earned her an outstanding reputation and she will thrive at NBC News.”

Canning was most recently a correspondent for ABC News, which she called home since 2004. She has had a busy Summer since leaving ABC. In August, Canning and husband Tony Bancroft welcomed a baby girl into the family.

Andrea Canning Welcomes Baby Kiki

Soon to be NBC News correspondent Andrea Canning is a mom, again. Christina Margaret Bancroft, aka “Kiki,” came into the world Friday at 1:25pm at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan. Kiki is doing great and we’re told older sisters Anna & Charlie are very excited. Andrea and dad, Tony Bancroft are getting ready for a few more sleepless nights.

Canning left ABC News a few months ago. And she can thank, in part, her former ABC News colleague Martha Raddatz for all this. Raddatz introduced Bancroft, a former fighter pilot, to Canning five years ago. The couple was married in 2008.

Andrea Canning Leaving ABC News, NBC’s ‘Dateline’ Likely Next Stop

ABC News correspondent Andrea Canning is leaving the network, TVNewser has learned. ABC and Canning officially parted ways last week, we hear.

No official word yet on where Canning will end up, but a source familiar with her move says that she is going to NBC News, where she will most likely end up as a correspondent on “Dateline.”

Canning joined ABC News in 2004 as the Washington correspondent for its affiliate service NewsOne. Prior to joining ABC she worked in a number of local markets in the U.S. and Canada.
