Bloomberg, El Financiero Launch Business Channel in Mexico, Central America

el financiero bloombergBloomberg and Mexican newspaper El Financiero are teaming up to launch a multiplatform Spanish-language business news service, including a television network that will serve as Mexico and Central America’s only Spanish-language business news channel.

The channel, which launched today, has four hours of original programming in Spanish, featuring journalists in Mexico including Enrique Quintana, Carlos Mota, Alejandro Cacho and Leonardo Kourchenko. It also offers Bloomberg TV content in English.

“Mexico and Central America are important territories, and this partnership will help Mexican companies further connect with the global market,” Bloomberg Media Group chairman Andrew Lack said in a statement. “Together, we will offer business and financial professionals market-moving insights on global and regional developments and stories that really matter.”

Atlantic Media’s Justin Smith Named CEO Of Bloomberg Media Group

The Bloomberg Media Group, which includs Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg BusinessWeek, has named Justin Smith CEO.

Smith joins Bloomberg from Atlantic Media, where he was president from 2010-2013. Atlantic Media includes The Atlantic magazine, National Journal and Quartz. Smith officially joins Bloomberg September 16, and will report to Bloomberg LP CEO Dan Doctoroff.

With the addition of Smith, Andrew Lack has been named chairman of Bloomberg Media. Lack, the former president of NBC News, has served as CEO of Bloomberg Media since 2008.

“Throughout Bloomberg’s history, we’ve been defined by our ability to disrupt markets, our willingness to invest when others don’t, and our constant focus on innovation,” said Doctoroff in a statement. “Justin Smith has an exceptional track record in each of these areas. His deep understanding of the media and vision for its future makes him an ideal fit at Bloomberg as we continue to transform and expand our media businesses worldwide.”

Matt Lauer Pokes Fun At Bad Press At UJA Dinner

NBC “Today” co-anchor Matt Lauer poked some fun at the recent headlines at a UJA Federation of New York event Tuesday night. The event was honoring Bloomberg Media CEO Andrew Lack, who was previously the president of NBC News.

Page Six has some of the juicy quotes:

These days, I only get asked to host dinners if polio is busy. Yup, I have a lower Q rating than polio right now…”  Lauer introduced presenter Katie Couric with this zinger: “Katie has a way of making headlines. Who can forget when she was co-host of the ‘Today’ show? She got a colonoscopy on TV. Not to be outdone, two weeks ago, I got one in The New York Times.”

Under CEO for multimedia Andrew Lack, Bloomberg Television has failed to eat into CNBC’s audience. Last year, talks to partner Bloomberg TV with ABC News broke down. Bloomberg has tried to attract stars, including offering CNBC’s David Faber a mid-six-figure deal. Bloomberg also went after the TimesAndrew Ross Sorkin. Neither could be swayed. Part of the problem is that [Bloomberg News editor in chief Matthew] Winkler remains resistant to adopting some of the entertainment values that could attract an audience.
