Esposito brings more than 30 years of reporting experience to NBC, where he will be the senior executive producer of the investigative unit. In his 12 years at ABC, he focused primarily on homeland security and the criminal justice system as a member of a member of Brian Ross‘ investigative unit.

Schone will join the investigative unit at NBCNews.com as an editor on April 22. At ABC, he was digital managing editor of the investigative unit. He was previously the executive news editor of Salon.com and a senior contributing writer at SPIN magazine.

“Richard and Mark are bold, experienced journalists known for their intrepid work. By building on the outstanding efforts of our veteran teams and utilizing our multiple on-air and online platforms, we now have an unparalleled capacity to continue breaking news and dig even deeper into important stories,” NBC News SVP Antoine Sanfuentes said in a statement.

In a memo to NBC staff, NBC News senior VP Antoine Sanfuentes praised Fischer’s leadership on the long-running Sunday show, and outlined her additional responsibilities:

Betsy’s experience and editorial judgment will help guide NBC News as it continues to be the leader in political reporting. She will also work with Chuck Todd and the NBC News political team, taking on additional responsibilities guiding the news division’s political news and information programming.

There are strong internal candidates, some of whom, it has been announced by Fili-Krushel, will take on additional duties. Alex Wallace (above, right), who oversees “Today,” and “Rock Center” will now oversee “Nightly News,” where she was once EP. Wallace, who’s been with NBC since 2005, would be the first female news president after nine men have held the job since 1968.

Phil Griffin will likely be considered for the job. As president of MSNBC for the last 4 and a half years he has given the network an identity and boosted ratings, consistently topping CNN — a network his close friend Jeff Zucker now runs. A front office and internal concern would be the progressive programming on the network, often not in line with NBC News standards. Mark Hoffman, president of CNBC, cannot be ruled out. Nor can Capus’ deputy, Antoine Sanfuentes, (above, left) who will run day-to-day in the interim.

NBC News has shaken up its leadership team, promoting DC bureau chief Antoine Sanfuentes (left) to senior VP of NBC News, promoting David Verdi to senior VP of newsgathering, upping Ken Strickland to DC bureau chief and naming Alex Wallace (center) EP of “Rock Center.” For Wallace, it’s a return to overseeing a Brian Williams broadcast. Wallace was EP of “Nightly News” in 2007-2008.

Announcing the changes, NBC News president Steve Capus highlighted that the new executive ranks all came from inside NBC.

As you read the list of promotions and changes spelled out in this note, please keep in mind I’ve decided to stay inside our talent-rich organization for each of these moves – a real testament to the contributions of these individuals and the bench strength of NBC News.

Sanfuentes, who joined NBC News as a desk assistant in 1990, rose through the producer and executive ranks and was named DC bureau chief in January 2011. In his new role he will be Capus’ chief deputy at NBC News in New York. Wallace, who had been Capus #2, will remain a senior VP and will add oversight of “Rock Center” as well as “Ann Curry’s production unit and our health initiative.”

Verdi, a longtime NBC Newser, who had been VP of newsgathering, is now a senior VP, adding oversight of news affiliate partnerships and the NBC News Channel.

Joining Strickland in DC will be Meaghan Rady, once a producer for Tom Brokaw, who rose through the ranks and will now be deputy bureau chief.

“I’m grateful to Rome for his leadership, signified by Rock Center’s first Emmy last week for Bob Costas’ breakthrough interview with Jerry Sandusky,” Capus writes in his note, which you can read in full after the jump.

MSNBC president Phil Griffin, NBC News president Steve Capus and NBC News DC bureau chief Antoine Sanfuentes were among those attending last night and taking part in a video answering the question: “How will television news evolve over the next 15 years?”

“I think you’ll see fewer of the big national operations that are all-consuming and a lot more of the niche,” predicts Griffin.

NBC’s Richard Engel, who was not at the dinner as he’s reporting from Libya, won the David Bloom Award for Excellence in Enterprise Reporting. Bloom, an anchor and correspondent for NBC News, died of an embolism in Iraq in 2003. His daughters presented the award to NBC DC bureau chief Antoine Sanfuentes who was Bloom’s producer when he was NBC’s White House correspondent.

ABC’s Jonathan Karl was awarded the Joan S. Barone Award for Excellence in Washington-based National Affairs/Public Policy Broadcasting.

Playbook’s Mike Allen thought Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) was the funniest speaker:

Strickland joined NBC in 1995 as an associate producer for “Dateline NBC.” He was named White House producer in 1997 and later was NBC’s producer on Capitol Hill. Before joining NBC, Strickland worked for WKRN in Nashville, WVTM in Birmingham, and at CNN in Atlanta.

Strickland takes over for Sanfuentes who was promoted to bureau chief in January after Mark Whitaker left for CNN.

This morning, TVNewser caught up with Sanfuentes at the “Morning Joe” taping at Chicago’s RL Restaurant.

Sanfuentes, who’s officially been on the job since Monday, began with NBC in 1989 as an intern at WRC-TV. “Twenty years later, here I am as bureau chief,” he tells TVNewser. “And it’s a humbling experience.”

Sanfuentes holds twice daily editorial meetings in the Tim Russert Conference Room, converted from Russert’s old office. “In some respects, it’s the heart of our bureau…And every single time we go in there, and we talk about what we’re going to do, we feel like there’s this towering presence that helps guide us to do the right thing. It’s a really powerful thing.”

Sanfuentes is at the helm just in time for the ramp-up to the 2012 Presidential election. “The adrenaline is already pumping, anticipating this political season,” says Sanfuentes, who was David Gregory‘s producer at the the White House during the Bush administration. As bureau chief, Sanfuentes also oversees Gregory’s “Meet the Press.”

The show “is number one for a reason,” he says. “It comes down to the moderator, and what they can do, and the way they do it.  And David is a natural.”

Sanfuentes started out as an intern at NBC’s DC O&O WRC, and became a desk assistant at NBC News in 1990. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the senior White House producer.

Antoine Sanfuentes was promoted to Deputy Bureau Chief from his “decade as Senior White House producer.” He replaces Wendy Wilkinson, who is leaving the network next month.

Also, Albert Oetgen‘s role has been expanded to managing editor as well as senior producer for Nightly News and Today show. And Meaghan Rady returns to the east coast as a coordinating producer for those shows. Rady was Tom Brokaw‘s producer during his final years at Nightly News, later moving to NBC’s LA bureau.
