“Welcome to a new kind of conversation!” Huffington said, ushering in HuffPost Live, the company’s attempt to disrupt the world of video news. Now six months in, HuffPost Live continues to chug along, producing 12 hours of content a day on topics as wide-ranging as celebrity gossip to turmoil in the Middle East, and everything in between. It is a proper TV news outfit, without the legacy constraints of TV news, though also without the massive daily viewership that TV news currently sees.

“I think that when it comes to TV in America–which is where the majority of video has been–it could use new sources, new voices, even a new format,” HuffPost Live host Ahmed Shihab-Eldin says. “We have been doing this for six months and we are trying to iterate and reinvent the format, and I think there is much more to come.”

New ventures attempt to solve problems, and the problem that Huffington and her team diagnosed was one of flow. In traditional TV news, information flows out to the viewer, but rarely, if ever, does information flow back.

“Part of the shift away from television is a shift away from the authoritative, top-down model,” Shihab-Eldin says. “In a conversation you have to listen, and on TV it is all output, there is very little responsiveness to the conversations around it.”

TVNewser spotted Fox News chairman Roger Ailes giving a warm hello to Susan Axelrod and Arianna Huffington as David Axelrod gave his remarks. The Axelrods established CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy as the family struggled to come to terms with their daughter Lauren’s epilepsy. Now 31, Lauren experienced her first seizure at seven months old.

We chatted with “CBS This Morning” anchor Charlie Rose, who, with his co-hosts Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell, is treating the “This Morning” staff to a holiday party next week. “It takes two jobs to be able to do it, but we’ll do it,” joked Rose, who also hosts “Charlie Rose” on PBS and Bloomberg TV.

Also at the event, organized for the most part by Tammy Haddad: “Good Morning America” and “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos and his wife Ali Wentworth, ABC political analyst

HuffPost executives have yet to finalize participants for the Shadow Conventions, which Huffington along with a handful of nonprofit and interest groups first launched during the 2000 presidential election. In 2000, the series of grassroots events organized as an alternative to the highly scripted national political conventions, counted Sen. John McCain (whose bid for the Republican nomination had already been torpedoed), Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Jesse Jackson, Warren Beatty and Huffington Post bloggers Bill Maher and Harry Shearer among the participants. As in 2000, the Shadow Conventions will take place in the same location as the RNC and DNC conventions. But this time, they will all be streamed live.

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper emceed the ceremony, which TVNewser attended. He opened the event with commentary on the role of news organizations in society, noting the importance of incorporating women and minorities into a media industry “traditionally dominated by — well, frankly, by white men. Woohoo, white men,” Cooper said sarcastically.

“Please don’t Tweet that!” Cooper said as the crowd laughed. “Arianna, take your hands off that keyboard. At least explain, give it some context!”

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos was also on hand to present the I-3 Award for Impact, Innovation and Influence to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

TVNewser spotted Arianna Huffington and Gabriel Sherman, who is working on a book about Fox News and was nominated for “Elephant in the Green Room,” a New York magazine feature on the network.  Also on the guest list: Contessa Brewer, Poppy Harlow, CNN News Networks president Greg D’Alba, “CBS This Morning” executive producer Chris Licht and MSNBC vice president of primetime programming Bill Wolff.

Kapp who lead marketing and communications for NBC News, will join HuffPo in a larger, newly-created role as SVP of global strategy, marketing and communications (See today’s NYTimes story on revamping at HuffPost). Kapp, who is a key adviser to NBC News president Steve Capus, will do the same for Arianna Huffington. “I am delighted to welcome Lauren to HuffPost as a member of our executive team,” said Huffington. “For a decade, Lauren has been an innovator and key advisor at NBC News, helping that historic and venerated brand maintain its standing and expand its audience during a time of tremendous upheaval in media.”

Monday night, Michael’s Resaturant was the scene of a party for Mika Brzezinski and her new book “Knowing Your Value.”

Miles Nadal, the CEO of MDC Partners and The Daily Beast/Newsweek‘s Tina Brown hosted the night. Guests included Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Arianna Huffington, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, NBC News “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, former CNN host Kathleen Parker, MSNBC president Phil Griffin, CBS News’s Lesley Stahl, IAC chairman Barry Diller, former Rep. Harold Ford Jr., MSNBC/The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capeheart, and Daily News‘s Mort Zuckerman.

Mika’s “Morning Joe” partner Joe Scarborough was not in attendance following the death of his father last week. EP Chris Licht, who is expected to announce in the coming days he’s leaving the network for an executive position at CBS News, was on hand.
