Six Months In, HuffPost Live Strives To Lead The Conversation

In August of last year, Arianna Huffington sat on a plush leather couch in a new television studio built on the fourth floor of The Huffington Post’s New York City offices.

“Welcome to a new kind of conversation!” Huffington said, ushering in HuffPost Live, the company’s attempt to disrupt the world of video news. Now six months in, HuffPost Live continues to chug along, producing 12 hours of content a day on topics as wide-ranging as celebrity gossip to turmoil in the Middle East, and everything in between. It is a proper TV news outfit, without the legacy constraints of TV news, though also without the massive daily viewership that TV news currently sees.

“I think that when it comes to TV in America–which is where the majority of video has been–it could use new sources, new voices, even a new format,” HuffPost Live host Ahmed Shihab-Eldin says. “We have been doing this for six months and we are trying to iterate and reinvent the format, and I think there is much more to come.”

New ventures attempt to solve problems, and the problem that Huffington and her team diagnosed was one of flow. In traditional TV news, information flows out to the viewer, but rarely, if ever, does information flow back.

“Part of the shift away from television is a shift away from the authoritative, top-down model,” Shihab-Eldin says. “In a conversation you have to listen, and on TV it is all output, there is very little responsiveness to the conversations around it.”

Roger Ailes, George Stephanopoulos, Tom Brokaw and Arianna Huffington Turn Out for CURE

Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod spent his final night with his mustache at New York’s Four Seasons Restaurant raising awareness — and money — for epilepsy research. Axelrod and his wife Susan hosted many Manhattan luminaries at the CURE New York reception at which Mayor Mike Bloomberg was presented an award for his support. In his brief remarks, Bloomberg caught sight of NBC’s Tom Brokaw in the crowd: “There’s Tom Brokaw. He’s my neighbor …. and my golf partner. Maybe he’ll even give me a few strokes next round.”

TVNewser spotted Fox News chairman Roger Ailes giving a warm hello to Susan Axelrod and Arianna Huffington as David Axelrod gave his remarks. The Axelrods established CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy as the family struggled to come to terms with their daughter Lauren’s epilepsy. Now 31, Lauren experienced her first seizure at seven months old.

We chatted with “CBS This Morning” anchor Charlie Rose, who, with his co-hosts Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell, is treating the “This Morning” staff to a holiday party next week. “It takes two jobs to be able to do it, but we’ll do it,” joked Rose, who also hosts “Charlie Rose” on PBS and Bloomberg TV.

Also at the event, organized for the most part by Tammy Haddad: “Good Morning America” and “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos and his wife Ali Wentworth, ABC political analyst

MSNBC Hosts, ‘Influential Progressives,’ Visit The White House For Economic Intel

The meeting was not for an interview (though it wouldn’t hurt to ask!) but rather to get briefed on the message the President wants to push as far as his tax plan goes. Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington also joined in.

Politico asked the White House for comment, here is what they said:

“This afternoon at the White House, the President met with influential progressives to talk about the importance of preventing a tax increase on middle class families, strengthening our economy and adopting a balanced approach to deficit reduction,” spokesman Josh Earnest said.

Courtesy Of C-SPAN, A Look Back At Pundits’ Past

BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski took advantage of C-SPAN’s vast video archive, and pulled together pictures of 60 well-known political pundits and journalists… as they were in the 1980′s and 1990′s.

HuffPost executives have yet to finalize participants for the Shadow Conventions, which Huffington along with a handful of nonprofit and interest groups first launched during the 2000 presidential election. In 2000, the series of grassroots events organized as an alternative to the highly scripted national political conventions, counted Sen. John McCain (whose bid for the Republican nomination had already been torpedoed), Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Jesse Jackson, Warren Beatty and Huffington Post bloggers Bill Maher and Harry Shearer among the participants. As in 2000, the Shadow Conventions will take place in the same location as the RNC and DNC conventions. But this time, they will all be streamed live.

THR also has details on some of the people who have been signed on to host programs for the network. There are some familiar names:

Media Turns a Reflective Eye Inward at Mirror Awards

Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Communications held its sixth annual Mirror Awards ceremony at the Plaza Hotel this afternoon, honoring the year’s best media reporting.

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper emceed the ceremony, which TVNewser attended. He opened the event with commentary on the role of news organizations in society, noting the importance of incorporating women and minorities into a media industry “traditionally dominated by — well, frankly, by white men. Woohoo, white men,” Cooper said sarcastically.

“Please don’t Tweet that!” Cooper said as the crowd laughed. “Arianna, take your hands off that keyboard. At least explain, give it some context!”

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos was also on hand to present the I-3 Award for Impact, Innovation and Influence to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

TVNewser spotted Arianna Huffington and Gabriel Sherman, who is working on a book about Fox News and was nominated for “Elephant in the Green Room,” a New York magazine feature on the network. Also on the guest list: Contessa Brewer, Poppy Harlow, CNN News Networks president Greg D’Alba, “CBS This Morning” executive producer Chris Licht and MSNBC vice president of primetime programming Bill Wolff.

Pres. Obama’s Coffee with Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, Arianna Huffington and More

Obama had yesterday with “an all-star list of progressive and liberal media folks.”

Those there included the Washington Post‘s Ezra Klein and Greg Sargent, MSNBC anchors Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Hayes, the Nation’s editor and publisher Katrina vanden Heuvel, the New York Times‘ Frank Bruni, and stars of the interwebs Arianna Huffington, Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo, Faiz Shakir of ThinkProgress and Joy Reid of The Reid Report.

Tapper writes, “the group chatted with the president about economic messaging [and] his agenda for 2012″ among other things.

Well, Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren has a few things to say about this, calling some media outlets hypocritical for reporting a story a few weeks ago questioning whether Van Susteren should divulge her husband’s friendships with Washington political insiders.
