Bill Owens Readies To Step Up To ’60 Minutes Sports’ Plate

Owens gets profiled by B&C’s Tim Baysinger (subscription required), and reveals a bit more about the program, which will combine updated archival stories, new stories, and in-studio interviews.

“Everybody on the floor is going to contribute stories,” he says, noting that Steve Kroft, Scott Pelley, Byron Pitts, Lara Logan and James Brown will all participate. CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian will also be a full-time correspondent. And Owens says they have talked about bringing in sports talent from outside the CBS/Showtime corporate family: “We may well end up with a familiar face from one of the other broadcasts.”

Tonight, one of the people that allegedly caught Sandusky in the act is speaking out for the first time.

Mike McQueary, currently an assistant coach for Penn State who was a grad assistant when he walked in on Sandusky and a young boy in the showers, will speak to Armen Keteyian on the “CBS Evening News.”

Update: Following the Sandusky and Giffords interviews, the McQueary interview was a disappointment. Lasting only 20 seconds, McQueary didn’t reveal any new or interesting information.

Well, seven months later, Dibble is coming clean on the reason why he’s not with the network.

“Listen, it’s their team, they acted in their own interests,” Dibble told FoxSports.com columnist Mark Kriegel. “And I’m gonna tell you something that I’ve never told anybody before. It was basically Strasburg’s father [who] e-mailed the owner and basically was offended by what I said. Now remember, I said that on my own radio show on another network, and his father e-mailed the owner and the owner wanted me out of there. so that’s the bottom line. So that should end it. I want Stephen to go on, never have my name brought up and have a great career. I had a great career, I had fun, had a great seven years, and it’s sad for me that people still associate me with him. There should be no association with him.” continued…

’60 Minutes’ Notches Best Ratings in Nearly Two Years

Television’s most watched news program had an exceptional night Sunday, November 21. CBS’ “60 Minutes” drew 17.7 million total viewers, its best performance since December, 2008.

“60 Minutes” was the fourth most-watched program on all of television for the week, its highest spot on that ranker in nearly a year. It was the fifth time in the last nine weeks the show has cracked the Nielsen top 10.

Sunday’s edition featured Armen Keteyian‘s report on the DEA agents who lured and arrested international arms dealer Viktor Bout, Steve Kroft‘s profile of famed microbiologist and human genome-mapper Craig Venter and Lara Logan‘s profile of actor Mark Wahlberg.

CBS News Reports Cited in Veterans Hearing

Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-AZ) is calling on the Department of Veterans Affairs to explain why the VA has stopped airing a PSA which has helped raise awareness of the veteran suicide prevention hotline.

Rep. Mitchell chaired a hearing on Capitol Hill today examining the VA’s suicide prevention outreach efforts.

In his press release following the hearing (after the jump), Mitchell cites two reports from CBS News correspondent Armen Keteyian. The first in late 2007 documented the alarming rate of veteran suicides. Another, in July, 2008, about the launch of the PSA, featuring actor Gary Sinise, which was part of a three-month test to determine its effectiveness.

CBS Report Leads to DNA Test Policy Change in San Antonio

A 5-month CBS investigative report by CBS News’ Armen Keteyian and producer Laura Strickler led to a policy change this week within the San Antonio police department:

In response to a CBS News investigation on untested rape kits, the San Antonio Police Department made a major announcement: it will now test all rape kits in stranger cases and will also go back and test all untested stranger rape kits in storage.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus began the Monday press conference by saying, “We are here this morning to talk about the CBS story about the rape kits.” He told reporters, “We don’t want to let any case where somebody was sexually assaulted fall through the cracks…We want to raise the potential that person is going to get caught by pulling them into a database.”

Video of the CBS report, which aired earlier this month, after the jump.

‘CBS Evening News’ Investigates CBS News Producer

The New York Post digs deeper into the CBS News investigation into CBS News employee Joe Halderman which was first reported Tuesday in the New York Observer. CBS Evening News investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian, who knows Halderman, is said to be investigating the story.

“How is this good?” asked a “48 Hours” source about the “Evening News” probe. But an “Evening News” source said the probe was spurred by a desire to avoid sitting on the sidelines while other media feast on the scandal. “CBS cannot be seen to be burying its head in the sand,” the source said.

The Post reports Keteyian has already conducted several background interviews “in the news department.”
