Lester Holt Reporting From Afghanistan

NBC’s Lester Holt reported from Afghanistan this morning on “Today” and will anchor “Nightly News” from there tonight.

Holt arrived in Afghanistan Saturday as the last U.S. surge troops begin to depart, amid increased insider attacks on U.S. troops. Reporting from Kabul, Holt will also interview the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, tomorrow. Correspondents Richard Engel and Atia Abawi will contribute reporting.

CNN’s Foreign Correspondent Atia Abawi joins NBC

Atia Abawi joined NBC as a freelance journalist who will produce and provide on-air reports for NBC News from Afghanistan, an NBC spokesperson tells TVNewser.

Hired by CNN in January of last year, Abawi was reporting in Afghanistan for the network. A CNN spokesperson tells TVNewser they “wish her well with her career.”

Abawi’s Facebook affiliation is NBC News, and @atiaabawi tweeted yesterday:

With as many 30,000 more U.S. troops preparing for a deployment to Afghanistan, FishbowlDC’s Matt Dornic chatted up Atia Abawi, the Virginia-bred CNN correspondent now based in Afghanistan. A portion:

Is it more difficult to do your job as a woman?

No, exactly the opposite. Being a female has worked to my advantage because the men are not intimidated and the women will talk to me. But it also helps that I speak the language. As the Afghan people grow more agitated with Westerners, they have become hesitant to speak to the media — especially through interpreters for fear that their words will be misconstrued.

CNN Appoints Three Foreign Correspondents

CNN Worldwide has announced it is adding three new international correspondents, in Afghanistan, China and the United Arab Emirates.

This brings the CNN total of international newsgathering locations to 33, according to the release.

Atia Abawi will be based in Afghanistan, Stan Grant in the UAE and Emily Chang (pictured) will be the network’s second correspondent in Beijing.
