Anderson Cooper, Ayman Mohyeldin and Al Jazeera Dodge Explosions In Gaza

Another day, another round of bombings in Gaza and Israel. A number of foreign journalists, including CNN’s Anderson Cooper, NBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin and reporters for Al Jazeera had their own close calls. Update: ABC’s Matt Gutman also had an incident, check it out after the jump.

Cooper, who had to deal with an explosion live on-air earlier in the week, this time witnessed a series of explosions not far from the building that became CNN’s makeshift headquarters.

Broadcasters Gear Up For Gaza Coverage

With the situation in Gaza continuing to escalate, the broadcast news divisions are making sure their people are in the region. Additional changes may be made, but for now here is the latest on the assignments in Gaza, Israel and beyond.

ABC News has Christiane Amanpour in Jerusalem, joined by Lama Hasan. Matt Gutman is reporting for ABC from Tel Aviv, while Alexander Marquardt reports from Gaza.

NBC News has Ayman Mohyeldin and Richard Engel in Gaza, Stephanie Gosk and Martin Fletcher in Tel Aviv, Jim Maceda in Cairo, Egypt and Ali Rouzi in Tehran, Iran.

CBS News has Clarissa Ward reporting from Cairo, Charlie D’Agata reporting from Gaza and Allen Pizzey reporting from Israel.

Fox News has Jerusalem correspondents Leland Vittert and David Lee Miller reporting from southwestern Israel, near the Gaza border.

NBC News Planning Middle East Focused Reportage Next Week

NBC News is planning substantial coverage focusing on the increasingly complicated situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan on Sunday and Monday.

Ann Curry will be reporting from the Syria/Turkey border, while Lester Holt and Richard Engel report from Afghanistan, as the U.S. military presence extends into its 12th year there.

In addition, regular Egypt-based correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin and Tehran, Iran-based correspondent Ali Rouzi will contribute while former NBC Tel Aviv-based correspondent Martin Fletcher will be returning to the city to report.

Newsers Prep for TIME 100 Gala

The TIME 100 gala is tonight at Time Warner Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall. The annual list celebrates those the magazine has deemed the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

Among them Matt Lauer who will be in attendance tonight. Other tvnewsers scheduled to attend: Ann Curry, Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams, Ann Coulter, Arianna Huffington, Willie Geist, Jane Pauley, Lawrence O’Donnell, and Ayman Mohyeldin. They’ll be rubbing shoulders with the likes of honorees Chelsea Handler, Kristen Wiig, Jeremy Lin, and Victor Cruz. And we’ll let you know if attendee Greta Van Susteren will have a chance to chat with comedian and honoree Louis C.K., considering their stormy past.

Ayman Mohyeldin: ‘I always felt myself [to be] an ambassador from the Middle East to the United States’

Former Al Jazeera English reporter turned NBC News correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin is interviewed by Columbia Journalism Review about his decision to switch networks. Interestingly, the CJR interviewer is Dave Marash, who had been AJE’s lead Washington anchor, before leaving due to what he said was an inherent bias in its reporting.

Mohyeldin tells Marash what he hopes to accomplish at NBC News, as well as what the big differences between the companies are:

As an Arab-American, a part of me wants to speak to the global audience, and a part of me wants to speak to America.

Ayman Mohyeldin Leaves Al Jazeera for NBC News

Al Jazeera English correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin, who was the face of that channel during the Egypt uprising, is joining NBC News as a foreign correspondent in September. Mohyeldin will be based in the Middle East for NBC, where he will contribute to all of the company’s platforms and networks.

Mohyeldin previously worked for Fox News and CNN in the Middle East, but started his career at NBC News in 2001 as a desk assistant.

“We’re excited to welcome Ayman back to the NBC News family as a foreign correspondent,” said NBC news president Steve Capus in a statement. “An extremely passionate and hard working journalist and producer, Ayman has a great deal of experience in various newsrooms covering major conflicts, and we think he will be an excellent addition to our team of correspondents.”

The move is a huge blow for AJE, which brought Mohyeldin stateside a few months back on a whirlwind press tour.

As News Prepares to Break In Yemen, Only CNN, Al Jazeera English Have Correspondents In-Country

Sometime in the next 48 hours, the embattled president of Yemen will make his first public appearance since being wounded by shrapnel when his compound was attacked. Elsewhere in the region, Syria continues to face daily demonstrations and demands for reform from citizens.

2011 has seen an enormous amount of change in the Middle East and North Africa, including protests that led to the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

As the world watches, only two cable news channels are in-country to cover the news, CNN and Al Jazeera English.

CNN, which has a much larger international presence than its cable news competitors, now has two reporters in Yemen in Nic Robertson and Mohammed Jamjoom, both in the capital city of Sanaa.

Though Mohyeldin’s journalistic reputation continues to grow—born in Egypt, raised in Michigan, started as a gofer for NBC News, reared as a producer at CNN, first appeared on-camera for Al Jazeera in 2006—his is hardly a household name, not in America at least. And yet he’s the closest the network has to some rough approximation of an Anderson Cooper, good-looking, with a boyish air of derring-do.

Joe Scarborough, Al Jazeera Reporter Ayman Mohyeldin Make ‘Time 100′

This year’s “Time 100″ list is out, and a number of TV and media figures made the cut.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough is on the list, and gets profiled by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg:

As a group, cable-television talk-show hosts are not exactly known for independent political analysis that is free of partisan favoritism, but that is exactly what makes Joe Scarborough, 48, so refreshing — and so important.

The only other TV news personality to crack the list was Al Jazeera English reporter Ayman Mohyeldin, whose coverage of the uprising in Egypt was widely regarded as second-to-none. Mohyeldin was profiled by Dan Rather:

Al Jazeera Tries to ‘Mainstream’ Its Faces

Al Jazeera is sending some of its top talent on media events around the country, “in an effort to “mainstream” the faces of this once-demonised network,” according to author Naomi Wolf.

Among the talent is Ayman Mohyeldin, who has been doing a media blitz, including a photo shoot for GQ.

And Mohyeldin can sound like Robert F. Kennedy: when the cry rose up from Tahrir Square hailing Mubarak’s abdication, he commented, “One man stepped down and eighty million people stepped up.”

The station’s US push could hardly be more necessary – to Americans. By being denied the right to watch Al Jazeera, Americans are being kept in a bubble, sealed off from the images and narratives that inform the rest of the world.
