ABC News Returns to Africa to Report on Hunger Crisis

ABC News is once again shining a light on the hunger crisis in Africa. Kenya-based correspondent Bazi Kanani (left) traveled to Niger where child malnutrition is at emergency levels.

Earlier today, the U.N.’s regional humanitarian coordinator for nine countries in Africa, revealed that 18 million people in West Africa will be impacted by the famine, including three million children whose lives will be at risk.

“Aid workers think donor fatigue is one of the reasons they are struggling to raise enough money for a full response to this crisis,” says Kanani. “But when you see with your own eyes these mothers holding thin babies who will very likely die if they don’t get more food, it’s hard to imagine that we, as individuals and members of the international community, can’t find some way to do a little bit more.”

Kanani’s first report airs tonight on “World News with Diane Sawyer.” She will also report this week for “Nightline.”

Kanani joined ABC News last Fall from KUSA-TV in Denver. She’s now based in Nairobi.

ABC’s David Muir traveled to Somalia twice last year, to document the famine there.

Kelly Cobiella and Bazi Kanani Join ABC News

ABC News is on a talent hiring spree. In addition to two local news anchors from Chicago set to join the network, ABC News president Ben Sherwood has announced he is beefing up his international reporting staff with the hires of Kelly Cobiella, (left) formerly of CBS News and Bazi Kanani, (below) an anchor-reporter at KUSA in Denver.

As we reported last month, Cobiella left CBS News and moved to the U.K. where her husband is from. In a note to staff, Sherwood writes, Cobiella “is no stranger to ABC after many years with our affiliates in Miami and Grand Junction.” She’ll work out of ABC’s London bureau.

After learning the ABC ropes in New York, Kanani will move to Africa to be ABC’s correspondent in Nairobi. Kanani’s father is from Tanzania. Her mother was born in Kansas and raised in Colorado.

According to her KUSA bio, “Bazi” is a traditional tribal name, short for Baz’imana which means “Ask God.”
