Papal Conclave Coverage: Broadcast and Cable Networks

The conclave to elect the next Pope will begin Tuesday after morning mass. Here’s what the broadcast and cable networks have planned for coverage.

ABC’s Diane Sawyer will broadcast “World News” from the Vatican beginning this evening. Sawyer is joined in Rome by Terry Moran, Josh Elliott, David Wright, Cokie Roberts, Rob Claiborne and Cecilia Vega. The network plans to broadcast special reports for the cardinals’ twice-daily votes.

CBS’ Scott Pelley will also be live from Vatican City starting today. Norah O’Donnell and Charlie Rose will host “CBS This Morning” live from Vatican City, with CBS News correspondents Allen Pizzey and Mark Phillips contributing to coverage.

Chris Jansing and Lester Holt will lead coverage for NBC News and MSNBC from Rome. Anne Thompson, Keir Simmons, Claudio Lavangna and George Weigel will also contribute to NBC-MSNBC coverage. Both networks will provide special reports for the cardinals votes. Jansing and Holt also led coverage of the last papal conclave in 2005, which Jansing talks about in a lengthy Q&A with Inside Cable News.

On Fox News, Shepard Smith will anchor from Rome. He will be joined by correspondents Amy Kellogg and Lauren Green to cover the conclave. Bryan Llenas will be reporting for Fox News Latino.

Chris Cuomo and Anderson Cooper will lead CNN’s coverage from Rome. Ben Wedeman, Miguel Marquez, Dan Rivers and Becky Anderson will report, along with CNN en Español’s Adriana Hauser and Jose Levy. CNN Vatican analyst John Allen will also contribute to coverage.

Pope Benedict Coverage: CNN

CNN will be dedicating nearly all of its dayside programming to coverage of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation tomorrow.

Coverage will begin at 4 AM, with “Early Start.” John Berman and Zoraida Sambolin will anchor until 7 AM.

From 10AM-12PM, CNN will air special coverage “The Pope’s Last Day,” anchored by Erin Burnett and Chris Cuomo in new York, and simulcast on CNNI. That program will feature Christiane Amanpour interviewing Cardinal Timothy Dolan live from Rome around 10 AM.

CNN will also cover a Cardinal press conference around 12:30 PM, and the Pope’s ceremonial departure sometime around 2 PM. CNN has analyst John Allen and correspondents Jim Bittermann, Ben Wedeman joining Amanpour in Rome, along with CNNI anchor Becky Anderson and CNN en Espanol’s Jose Levy.

Amanpour has been in Rome reporting for a few days, even drawing praise from one of the Cardinals (see below).

Piers Morgan, Brooke Baldwin Hosting CNN’s Coverage of the Diamond Jubilee

CNN will have dedicated coverage of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next week. On Sunday from 11am-1pmET Piers Morgan and Brooke Baldwin will anchor the channel’s coverage of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, which will see a flotilla of boats travel down the river.

On Tuesday, June 5 from 9-11amET, CNN will cover the Royal Carriage Procession, which sees the Royals travel from Westminster to Buckingham Palace via horse-drawn carriage.

Becky Anderson, Richard Quest, Zain Verjee and CNN’s Royal Correspondent Max Foster will all contribute to the Jubilee programing.

As we reported earlier, ABC Newssecured the U.S. TV rights for the Jubilee concert, and also has the only U.S. interview with Princes William and Harry in advance of the Jubilee. ABC News broadcasts will originate from London next week.

CNN will also televise four Royal-related documentaries, and will have a digital component, more on those after the jump.

Liza McGuirk named EP of CNNI’s ‘Amanpour’

As Christiane Amanpour plans a return to the CNN airwaves this spring, hosting an international newscast from New York, Liza McGuirk has been named her Executive Producer.

The half-hour “Amanpour” will air weekdays at 3pmET and replay at 5pm and will be seen in more than 200 countries on CNNI. The show will be the centerpiece of a new CNN International lineup, says Tony Maddox, EVP and managing director of CNNI.

As part of a deal announced in December, Amanpour continues her reporting for ABC News. “Christiane has proven herself time and time again to be the leading international journalist in television news and with Liza’s commitment to producing compelling television, ‘Amanpour’ will showcase the very best CNN has to offer,” says Maddox in a statement.

“Amanpour” joins existing CNNI programs, and a new newscast anchored by Isha Sesay. European primetime will look like this (all times ET):

1 pm International Desk

2 pm Quest Means Business

3 pm Amanpour

3:30 p.m. Isha Sesay

4 pm Connect the World with Becky Anderson

5 pm Amanpour (encore)

5:30 World Sport

6 pm Piers Morgan Tonight

Like Amanpour, McGuirk is a CNN original, joining the network in 1980. In 1989 McGuirk moved to CBS News where she spent eight years. She returned to CNN and launched “Fareed Zakaria: GPS” and “Parker-Spitzer.” McGuirk is married to Kevin Magee who is the EVP of Fox Business Network.

CNNI’s ‘Connect the World’ Gets A New Look

“Connect the World” anchor Becky Anderson will broadcast from a redesigned London studio beginning next week. The show — which airs in primetime in Europe — is debuting a whole new look, including new logos and graphics, on Monday.

CNN Unveils Royal Wedding Coverage Plans

CNN has announced its coverage plans for the upcoming Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton slated for Friday, April 29.

As part of its coverage, Piers Morgan, Anderson Cooper and Kiran Chetry will anchor their respective programs from London for all or part of that week. The channel is also bringing on Cat Deeley as a special correspondent.

Live coverage of the wedding will begin at 4 AM ET, and will be hosted by Morgan, Cooper, Chetry, Richard Quest and Deeley.

Also on tap: a documentary about Middleton, hosted by Soledad O’Brien, as well as four half-hour specials on the wedding, which will run each Saturday in April at 2 and 10 PM on CNN/U.S. and CNN International, anchored by Quest. The specials will kick-off April2, and the documentary “The Woman Who Would be Queen,” will run Sunday, April 24 at 8 and 11 PM.

For HLN, Brooke Anderson will co-anchor “Showbiz Tonight” from London, while Becky Anderson and Quest will anchor their programs from location in London.

The networks of NBCUniversal announced its coverage plans earlier this week.

CNNI, CNN/U.S. Saturday Simulcast

CNN Worldwide is once again combining the on-air programming for CNN/U.S. and CNNI throughout the day today. Executives believe simulcasting Saturday’s coverage, which will be dominated by the situation in Japan, is more resourceful than both networks going it alone.

At 6amET, CNNI’s Andrew Stevens in Hong Kong and CNN/U.S.’s Randi Kaye in New York co-anchored coverage. At 9amET CNNI’s Becky Anderson took over from London as Kaye continued in New York. That will continue until 11amET, when Fredricka Whitfield it CNN Atlanta joins Anderson. At Noon, John Vause takes over for Anderson. Vause, an Australian who has worked for CNN in Asia, will anchor from Atlanta with Whitfield. Following all this?

The simulcast continues into the afternoon and evening hours.
