’60 Minutes,’ with Madoff Interviews, is #5 Show of the Week

Sunday’s “60 Minutes” finished as the 5th most-watched primetime show of the week with 18.56 million Total Viewers — its largest audience in nearly a year and the best A25-54 and A18-49 performance in nearly three years.

With the Pittsburgh Steelers-New England Patriots NFL lead-in, the show featured Morley Safer‘s sitdowns with Ruth Madoff and her son Andrew — their first interviews since the ponzi scheme of Bernie Madoff was revealed in 2008.

This was “60 Minutes’” best viewership since Dec. 19. 2010 when the show had the Pittsburgh Steelers-New York Jets game as its lead-in.

On Twitter, Chris Cuomo Tweaks Those Other Madoff Interviews

ABC’s Chris Cuomo took to Twitter this morning to jab the Madoff family interviews on other networks.

Bernie Madoff‘s wife Ruth and son Andrew spoke to Morley Safer last night on “60 Minutes,” and this morning to Matt Lauer on “Today.” Earlier this month, Cuomo interviewed Stephanie Mack the widow of the other Madoff son, Mark. Her account of the days, weeks and months following the revelation of the multi-billion dollar ponzi scheme differs from that of her mother-in-law and brother-in-law.

Barbara Walters Speaks to Bernie Madoff

With his wife Ruth set to speak to CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday and NBC’s “Today” on Monday, ABC News presented an exclusive interview with the ponzi-schemer himself Bernie Madoff on “Good Morning America” this morning… sort of.

Because the prison he is in does not allow cameras, Barbara Walters had to recount what he said to Robin Roberts:

Walters is not the first journalist to interview Madoff from prison. She isn’t even the first TV news reporter to do so (Fox Business Network’s Charlie Gasparino interviewed Madoff in August), nonetheless, her interview does attempt to undercut the upcoming Ruth Madoff interviews slated for “60″ on Sunday and “Today” on Monday. Of course, without any photos or video, it is an uphill battle.

For Chris Cuomo, Stephanie Madoff Mack’s Story is a Challenge To Tell

For “20/20″ anchor Chris Cuomo, the story of Bernie Madoff is a complex one, with a resonating message.

“Madoff became the face of the animosity toward what was perceived, what still is perceived, as a corrupt financial system,” Cuomo tells TVNewser. “After 2008 there became an engrained sense among many that there are two sets of rules, that there is a dirty game afoot when it comes to the wealthy and Wall Street.”

Cuomo was highly aware of Madoff’s reputation during a recent sit-down with his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Madoff Mack, in her first interview since the December suicide of her husband, Mark Madoff. By all accounts, Cuomo says, Mack was innocent of any wrongdoing, and she is now left picking up the pieces of a shattered life.

“This is a difficult form of journalism,” he says. “This is a love story wrapped up in a news story, and that’s tricky to tell, because there is a really deep bond between these two people, Stephanie and Mark. So telling that story, while remembering that this is also a window into a situation that affected thousands, is tricky. It involves a lot of sophisticated storytelling.” continued…

Olbermann Talks Rush, AIG on Leno

MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann was a guest last night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The majority of the interview revolved around the financial crisis — AIG and Bernie Madoff.

Leno asked Olbermann about Rush Limbaugh‘s support of the AIG execs keeping the bonuses. “You can look at some of the things Rush says on the air and you can find some original point where it started logically, as you suggest,” said Olbermann. “That one doesn’t make no sense whatsoever.”

Madoff Jailed: Cablers (and NBC) Cover

Bernie Madoff was jailed after pleading guilty to 11 criminal counts related to a Ponzi scheme that bilked as much as $65 billion from investors. Sentencing is set for June 16, although MSNBC legal analyst Susan Filan Tweeted that the growing investigation will likely delay that.

NBC News produced a special report for the network at 11:19amET at the culmination of the court appearance. Lester Holt anchored.

All the cable news and business channels have been covering the news as well — but Fox Business Network reported it first at 11:11amET, nearly two minutes ahead of others.

As for how the broadcast networks reported Madoff’s arrival at the courthouse, NBC’s Today show and CBS’s The Early Show covered it live at 7:19amET, while ABC was finishing up a report on their “Big” series before going to commercial. Coming out of the break, New York’s WABC covered live the aftermath of the arrival.

For the first time, he’ll explain how he did what he did. In order to accept a guilty plea, the judge must hear him describe his crimes.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow was back on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night. She made her first Tonight Show appearance in October.

“I enjoy your show because you don’t yell and scream,” said Leno. “When I watch a lot of the cable shows about politics, it’s like people screaming all the time.”

“I get excited sometimes, which means I’m sort of loud, but when I’m angry I’m more of a quiet angry,” said Maddow.

Covering the Downturn, Looking for the Upswing

In his column in tomorrow’s New York Times, David Carr writes about those who cover the financial crisis.

Being a financial news anchor must seem like owning an ice cream parlor where spinach is the only flavor on the menu.

“We are looking for the crocuses and daffodils,” said Tyler Mathisen, managing editor of CNBC, which is owned by NBC Universal. “They may not come up this spring, but they are going to come.”

The problem for financial reporters (and consumers) is compounded by the failure of some of the more convenient tropes of business reporting. Many of the financial sectors’ rock stars have turned out to be the biggest fools of all.

Some financial journalists are tuning out altogether.

“I try not to watch CNBC,” says Dave Kansas who works for financial news site FiLife. “I don’t keep a TV near my desk because I don’t want to get caught up in the hourly changes. The idea that you can pick stocks and beat the market is sort of silly no matter what kind of market you are working into,” he said. “Bernie Madoff was able to deliver steady returns, but we know now how he did that.”

Bernie Madoff is back in court today, and, like Monday, the business networks have covered the event from stake-out to car chase through New York City to the courthouse. Madoff Bail Decision Gets Biz Network Focus

It’s Bernie Madoff Day on the business networks, as a judge is set to rule shortly on whether the financier should have his bail revoked and be jailed immediately. Correspondents on every network have been reporting live from Madoff’s Upper East Side apartment as well as the court house, including those for the cablers. CNBC employed a “Madoff Watch” box in the lower right corner of the screen, showing a live shot of his apartment during non-Madoff segments, around 6amET — FBN followed suit a few hours later. There’s also a “Bail Ruling” countdown in place on both networks:

CNN Docs Premiere This Weekend

As one Doc is potentially exiting CNN, two other docs will premiere on the network this weekend.

The first is a television version of the documentary, “I.O.U.S.A.”” Following the premiere at 2pmET on Saturday, Ali Velshi and Christine Romans co-host a panel discussion with policy leaders. It re-airs Sunday at 3pmET.

The other special takes a look at the Bernie Madoff scandal. “Madoff: Secrets of a Scandal — A CNN-Fortune Special Investigation” is hosted by Romans and Fortune‘s Andy Serwer. It premieres Saturday at 8pmET and is re-aired on Sunday at 8pmET.
