How Susan Page got the Ann Curry Exit Interview

FishbowlDC’s Betsy Rothstein talked with “USA Today” reporter Susan Page this morning about her interview with Ann Curry in which Curry outlined her “Today” show departure.

Page, “USA Today’s” DC bureau chief, mainly covers politics so we wanted to know how she got the interview with the most talked-about media personality of the past few weeks.

“Better to ask Ann Curry why she chose USA TODAY for this interview,” Page says. “My experience with people in the news, in politics and elsewhere, is that they are drawn to USA TODAY’s national reach and our reputation for fairness.”

Page also says her relationship with DC power lawyer Bob Barnett, who represented Curry during negotiations, helped. “I have done some interviews with political authors represented by Bob Barnett, and I believe Bob suggested my name.”

Howie Kurtz and Matt Lewis Make Up

FishbowlDC’s Betsy Rothstein caught up with Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz and Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis after their on air confrontation on Kurtz’s “Reliable Sources” Sunday. As we reported, Kurtz and Lewis sparred over the White House interruption last Friday.

Kurtz argued that Daily Caller reporter Neil Munro, “had no business interrupting the president.” Lewis disagreed: “The press corps should be a little less deferential to authority. He did the right thing.” Kurtz then accused Lewis of taking that line to “defend your guy,” Lewis.

Today, FBDC reports there’s no love lost. “And if it helps us mend fences,” says Lewis, “[Kurtz] is welcome to stop by the Daily Caller for a beer summit, anytime!”

Kurtz adds, “I will absolutely have Matt Lewis back many times. He’s a smart guy, a good guest and is welcome to disagree with me anytime.”

Rosen Apologizes for Logan Remarks: ‘A man should never joke about women being abused or harassed’

FishbowlDC’s Betsy Rothstein interviewed journalist Nir Rosen about the offensive Tweets he sent yesterday about CBS’ Lara Logan — after she was assaulted in Egypt. Rosen tweeted that Logan was trying “to outdo Anderson” — referring to the attack on CNN’s Anderson Cooper in Egypt on Feb. 2.

Rosen told Rothstein, “I feel like when you have done something so offensive and stupid, even trying to explain it seems like you are justifying it and what you say will be taken out of context.”

Rosen will be on “Anderson Cooper 360″ tonight.

Former Cable News Anchor Laurie Dhue: ‘Now that the genie is out of the bottle, I just want to help people’

Meredith Vieira sat down with Laurie Dhue this morning to talk about her now public struggle with alcoholism. Dhue spoke about her disease last week at a prayer dinner in Washington hosted by conservative syndicated columnist Cal Thomas. She said publicly to the group: “Yes, I would drag myself into work deeply hungover.”

In the “Today” interview this morning, Dhue said that she “certainly didn’t know anybody was going to be writing about it.”

FishbowlDC’s Betsy Rothstein — who reported on the dinner last week — notes that neither Dhue nor Vieira should be shocked that reporters would be there and that they would report on her coming out as an alcoholic. Dhue holds the distinction of being the only anchor to have hosted shows on all three major U.S. cable news networks: CNN where she worked from 1990 to 1999, MSNBC (1999-2000), and Fox News (2000-2008).

Maybe Goodell thought he was on “60 Minutes” with Mike Wallace?

Whatever Goodell was thinking, Mike Chris Wallace was forced to correct the NFL commissioner by saying, “I’m Chris.”
