Former ABC News correspondent Betsy Stark has joined Ogilvy Public Relations, PRNewser reports. A Peabody Award-winner, Stark spent 12 years at ABC News on the business beat. In a note to colleagues when she left ABC Stark wrote, “Second acts are possible and it is exciting to consider the possibilities beyond this job that I have loved and which I have worked hard to do well.”

ABC Producer Joins WNYC Radio

ABC News producer Charles Herman, who oversaw the ABC’s Business News unit, has joined WNYC Radio as the station’s Business and Economics Editor starting this week. Herman’s move was unrelated to the recent buyouts and layoffs at ABC News. He had been with the network since 1994. (Updated)

ABC News business correspondent Betsy Stark was among those let go in a round of personnel cuts earlier this month.

Betsy Stark Latest ABC News Correspondent Cut

ABC News business correspondent Betsy Stark is being let go in a round of personnel cuts that will ultimately number in the hundreds.

Stark, who has been with ABC since 1998, was informed of the news yesterday. In a note to colleagues this morning, obtained by TVNewser, Stark writes, “It is ironic, I think, that one of my last stories here was about professionals in mid-life forced by a layoff to reinvent themselves.”

An ABC News insider tells us, “Everybody adores Betsy. She’s a class act.”

Before ABC, Stark worked at Dow Jones as correspondent and later as senior producer of the weekly “Wall Street Journal Report.”

“Second acts are possible,” writes Stark, “and it is exciting to consider the possibilities beyond this job that I have loved and which I have worked hard to do well.”

Adds the insider, “These are difficult times for many news organizations and these are agonizing decisions.”

Brian Ross: ‘We Got a Rare Insight into a Chapter of American History’

TVNewser dropped by ABC News investigative correspondent Brian Ross‘ book party last night at ABC’s Times Square studios. “The Madoff Chronicles” hit store shelves this week and many of Ross’ colleagues were on hand to congratulate him last night.

ABC “World News” anchors, present and future, were there. Charlie Gibson and Diane Sawyer along with her husband Mike Nichols stopped by to offer their congratulations.

ABC News President David Westin described Ross as “The premier investigative reporter working today,” and said, “I think it’s also a bigger occasion to celebrate the work, in general, that you do with all of your colleagues. We at ABC news couldn’t be prouder of the work that you do.”

Ross also addressed the crowd and thanked Westin and everyone who helped him along the way including senior investigative producer Rhonda Schwartz and the rest of her team. He also added, “Finally, we have to thank Bernie and Ruth.”

GMA’s Chris Cuomo told TVNewser the turnout was a testament to how much everyone at ABC News respects Ross. Another GMAer, Sam Champion also attended along with GMA’s Senior EP Jim Murphy, EP Tom Cibrowski, and “Weekend GMA” anchor Bill Weir.

Also present, “Nightline” EP James Goldston, “Nightline” correspondent Vicki Mabrey, “World News” EP Jon Banner, correspondents Betsy Stark and Andrea Canning, and EP of ABC News magazines David Sloan.

We caught up with Ross and asked him about the current state and what the future holds for investigative journalism:

‘World News:’ Where Things Stand

ABC News is going to spend considerable time this week talking about what happened this week, one year ago. “From Wall Street to Main Street: Where Things Stand” is a 5-part series airing on ‘World News’ with Charles Gibson.

Who Got the Most Airtime in ’08?

Andrew Tyndall of the Tyndall Report has compiled his 2008 Year in Review, and not surprisingly the top story on network news was the presidential election.

Actually, it was the top three stories. Tyndall breaks down the stories by candidate — 745 stories about Barack Obama, 531 about John McCain and 288 about Hillary Clinton. Of the three evening newscasts, NBC Nightly News had the most “balance” when it came to the number of stories on Obama and McCain.

Economic stories made up the next three, with the bailout at #4, gas prices at #5 and the stock market at #6.

The top story of 2007, the Iraq War, finished #7 in 2008. The networks produced less than a quarter of the number stories about the war in 2008 (434) than they did in 2007 (1,888), according to Tyndall.

Times Square Transformed For ABC Election Night

After stopping by the CNN viewing party in Duffy Square we headed a few blocks south to ABC’s Times Square studios. As we walked in, GMA Weekend anchor Bill Weir was heading outside to begin live shots for the network’s coverage. On the second floor studio, Charles Gibson was just beginning World News, which lead right in to ABC’s coverage for the night.

We stopped in the green room where ABC News president David Westin was watching coverage along with correspondents Dr. Timothy Johnson, Betsy Stark and Brian Ross. Dr. Johnson, physician first, told us that he’d checked earlier in the day and there is a defibrillator in the studio. “A lot of adrenaline rushing tonight,” he said. Westin was pleased with the final story on World News, which featured ABC’s two off-air reporters following the Obama and McCain campaigns.

In a second green room, on-air guests waited for their turns on air, and, in the meantime, enjoyed the catering, as we discovered in the clip below.

Before we departed we ran into Good Morning America senior EP Jim Murphy who came to watch the coverage, so he knows what to expect first thing in the morning.

Dow Dives as House Votes

Breaking: The cable news and business networks are covering the House vote on the $700 billion bailout bill. As the tally continued to an eventual “No” vote, the dow took a nose dive, at one point down 705 points. On MSNBC, Andrea Mitchell and House producer/reporter Mike Viqueira discussed the rules that could turn some of the “no” votes around. On CNN with Kyra Phillips anchoring, Ali Velshi discussed the business side of the story. On FNC, Neil Cavuto joined the Live Desk anchors discussing the “other options” still available if this bill dies.

The broadcast networks also produced special reports on the news. ABC’s report at 2:08pmET was anchored by Charlie Gibson; correspondents Jake Tapper and Betsy Stark contributed.

CBS produced a special report at 2:10pmET. Randall Pinkston anchored and business correspondent Anthony Mason reported on the Wall Street reaction and Bob Orr reported from Washington

Brian Williams anchored a special report on NBC at 2:21pmET. Viqueira contributed from Capitol Hill and CNBC’s Michelle Caruso-Cabrera reported on the market reaction.

Bush Talks Crisis on Networks

President Bush gave a brief statement this morning on the bleeding financial markets, and all networks and cablers took it live. ABC’s Charlie Gibson anchored, with Betsy Stark and Dan Harris contributing. CBS’ special report was anchored by Harry Smith. All three networks, as well as every business news and cable news channel, took President George W. Bush‘s statement on the economy live just before 11amET. On ABC, Charlie Gibson anchored the special report, with analysis from Betsy Stark. The report lasted from 10:59-11:04amET. CBS News’ special report, from 10:58-11:02amET, was anchored by Harry Smith with analysis from Jim Axelrod. And NBC News’, from 10:58-11:06, saw Ann Curry anchor with CNBC’s Erin Burnett on for analysis.
