Bianna Golodryga Named ‘GMA’ Weekend Co-Anchor

Bianna-Golodryga_5-7.jpgBreaking: ABC News has named Bianna Golodryga as the new co-anchor of the weekend edition of “Good Morning America.” Golodryga joins Bill Weir as well as Ron Claiborne (news anchor) and Marysol Castro (weather anchor). ABC News President David Westin sent an email to staff informing them of the news.

Her first day is tomorrow. She will continue to cover business and finance as a correspondent for the network.

There had been speculation with the departure of Kate Snow — who starts at “Dateline NBC” next week — that Golodryga, an internal candidate, would be the likely choice for the job. She had been a regular part of the fill-in rotation since Snow’s departure.

Golodryga had also reportedly been in consideration for the weekday newsreader position that eventually went to Juju Chang after Chris Cuomo moved to “20/20.”

She had recently made non-industry headlines for her engagement to Peter Orszag, director of the OMB.

She joined ABC News in 2007 after working at CNBC from 2001.

Bloomberg is pre-empting its normal evening line-up for a special hosted by Margaret Brennan called “Behind the Dive.” We hear FBN will preempt its evening programming while Liz Claman, David Asman and Neil Cavuto continue to anchor. (Also, FNC has been showing a crazy time-lapse of the DOW’s drop and bounce-back.)

> NBC and ABC both broadcast brief special reports at the 4pmET market close. Claiborne and Golodryga again in for ABC, while Brian Williams was in on NBC.

> CNBC is airing a special report “Markets in Turmoil” tonight. Larry Kudlow anchors from 7-8pmET, Maria Bartiromo and David Faber are in 8-10pmET.

Networks Scramble as Obama Makes Surprise Trip to Afghanistan

Just before NoonET, the cable networks began reporting the news that Pres. Obama had landed in Kabul, Afghanistan for a brief, but previously unannounced trip. Fox News anchor Jamie Colby reported the news at 11:51am, as did NBC White House correspondent Mike Viqueira on MSNBC. CNN’s Candy Crowley, who was part of the “Sound of Sunday” segment at the end of “Reliable Sources” reported the news at 11:53amET. ABC News produced a special report 12:03pmET anchored by Bianna Golodryga.

Who Will Co-Anchor ‘GMA’ Weekend?

With Kate Snow departing ABC, as we first reported earlier today, for NBC’s “Dateline,” the natural question arises: who will take over the “Good Morning America” weekend edition slot co-anchoring with Bill Weir?

Juju Chang and Bianna Golodryga both taped auditions for newsreader when the weekday edition added George Stephanopoulos as co-anchor late last year. Chang got the job, leaving Golodryga as the front-runner for the weekend show. But don’t rule out Chang for the job either.

Other internal candidates could be correspondent Deborah Roberts and GMA consumer reporter Elisabeth Leamy.

Chang and Elizabeth Vargas will co-anchor with Weir this Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Scandal Erupts for Orszag, Golodryga

orzagtoday_1-7.jpgThe NY Post reports that Peter Orszag‘s ex gave birth to his “secret love child” just six-weeks prior to his engagement to ABC News’ Bianna Golodryga. We recently wrote about the engagement of the OMB director and Golodryga.

The story got considerable attention on NBC, where it was a top story on the “Today” show. It was also featured on MSNBC where Norah O’Donnell called it “an embarrassment for one of the president’s top advisors.”

Orszag and Claire Milonas, his former girlfriend, released the following joint statement regarding the story: “We were in a committed relationship until the spring of 2009. In November, Claire gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Although we are no longer together, we are both thrilled she is happy and healthy, and we would hope that everyone will respect her privacy.”

Crossover Week on the Morning Shows

This morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” FBN’s Cody Willard was on to talk about financial resolutions for 2010. The segment was anchored by ABC’s Bianna Golodryga who cut her teeth at CNBC.

Brian_12.31.jpgAnd yesterday, on the CBS “Early Show,” former NBC News “Today” show senior producer Brian Balthazar, who’s now director of programming for HGTV, was on to talk about “Fameballs,” defined by Balthazar (who does stand-up comedy on the side) as “Someone whose fame snowballs, sometimes for legitimate reasons and sometimes because the media coverage causes it to explode and the American public becomes sick of them.” ie. Jon Gosselin.

More Holiday Engagements at the News Nets

On Christmas eve, we told you about the two CNNers who got engaged across the street from CNN’s New York HQ. Then Monday, ABC News’ Bianna Golodryga got engaged to Peter Orszag, the OMB director.

Well, they weren’t the only TV news employees to get engaged over the holiday. Justin Orlando, one of the “Good Morning America” production associates, got engaged on Christmas eve to his girlfriend, Meredith Afflixio. Over the weekend, CNN technical production manager Brooke Turnbull proposed to another NYC CNNer, Amanda Townsend. And on Sunday night, the Weather Channel’s Kim Perez was the recipient of a surprise on-air proposal that…just needs to be seen.

Congrats everybody.

ABC News Financial Correspondent Engaged to OMB Director

orszag_golodryga_12-28.jpgABC News’ economy and business correspondent Bianna Golodryga is engaged to marry Peter Orszag, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Barack Obama, reports the NY Times. Golodryga, who previously worked at CNBC, has been with ABC News since 2007 and has reported for “Good Morning America,” “Nightline,” and “World News Weekend.”

The couple got engaged over lunch today in Manhattan and Orszag said the wedding would probably take place in October. No word on if Golodryga will move down to Washington. (She’s currently based in New York with ABC.)

Also no word on who will be in charge of balancing the joint checking account.

With George Stephanopoulos Nearly Locked In, What About the Rest of ‘Good Morning America?’

GMA_12.4.jpgWith George Stephanopoulos offered the job of co-hosting “Good Morning America,” a game of musical anchor chairs is about to play out at ABC News.

In addition to filling his seat at ABC’s “This Week,” which last week was #1 in the ratings, there is a growing sense that newsreader Chris Cuomo is not long for the morning show if he does not get the top job.

Cuomo, insiders tell us, may be headed to ABC primetime as co-anchor of “20/20.” Elizabeth Vargas has been anchoring solo since John Stossel jumped to Fox Business in September.

So, who gets the GMA newsreader job?

Howie Kurtz reports that ABC executives have “staged taped sessions with three female staffers — Kate Snow, JuJu Chang and Bianna Golodryga — who have substituted in that role to see how they interact with the co-host.”

Sources tell TVNewser the tapings with two of those staffers — Golodryga and Chang — occurred yesterday morning with Stephanopoulos and co-anchor Robin Roberts present. “The idea was to see the chemistry between them,” says a source.
