Bill and Willie Geist Share Good Talks in New Book

GeistsBookBill Geist, the award-winning special correspondent for “CBS Sunday Morning,” and his son Willie Geist, “Today” show and “Morning Joe” host, have written a new book together. “Good Talk, Dad,” out next Tuesday, is written in a unique back-and-forth banter style, with riffs on music, sports, religion, fatherhood and summer camp fails, as recounted in today’s Wall Street Journal:

That saga involved sending the 13-year-old Willie to an idyllic camp on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.

At least it seemed idyllic in the slide-show presentation a camp representative gave the Geists. However, it turned out to be less a camp than a penal colony. Willie discovered that when the buzz one morning in the mess hall was about a tire-slashing incident the previous night—not involving campers, but counselors.

“Camp Carson served not just as a place for carefree boys to spend a magical summer,” Willie writes with a minimum of wistfulness, “but also as a safe, wooded refuge for convicted nonviolent gang offenders to serve out their sentences as camp counselors.”

The Afternoon Ticker: Geist, Squawk, Guthrie

  • CBS correspondent Bill Geist is getting steamy for a segment on “CBS Sunday Morning.” Geist’s segment is about erotic romance novels, and based on the picture CBS sent over (see right) he really went in-depth.

‘Today’ Officially Welcomes Willie Geist

NBC’s “Today” formally welcomed Willie Geist as the co-anchor of the 9 AM hour this morning. The show put together a package explaining Willie’s life and career, including interviews with his father, Bill Geist, the long-time correspondent for CBS News.

Later on, Al Roker and Natalie Morales competed in a game show to determine who knew Willie better.

MSNBC’s Willie Geist is subbing for Matt Lauer this week on “Today” while on “CBS This Morning,” Willie’s dad Bill Geist talked about his battle with Parkinson’s, which he revealed on “CBS Sunday Morning.” See it after the jump.

On “Today” Willie took a few minutes to talk about his dad and that announcement on Sunday. “That was my most proud day with my dad. That was not easy for him because I know what he’s gone through over the years to deal with it. So, very proud and more proud that he’s going to now help people.”

Bill Geist Reveals Parkinson’s Diagnosis on ‘CBS Sunday Morning’

Longtime CBS News correspondent Bill Geist announced on “CBS Sunday Morning” that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

“I’ve had it for years, told no one, not even my kids. I didn’t want them to worry, didn’t want to be seen as ‘the sick guy.’ Today, I’m telling you.”

WATCH:

Bill Geist Gets Star on Walk of Fame

A big honor this afternoon for CBS News “Sunday Morning” correspondent Bill Geist. He got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His son, MSNBC anchor Willie Geist spoke at the dedication ceremony. (The honor was mentioned this morning on “Way Too Early,” with Peter Alexander filling in.)

Bill Geist is being honored for his 25 years of entertaining and informing TV viewers.

In addition to Willie Geist, his sister Libby Geist, a two-time Peabody-award winning producer (take that Willie!) at ESPN Films was also there; also Geist’s CBS colleagues EVP and Chief Communications Officer Gil Schwartz, Geist’s producer Amy Rosner and “Sunday Morning” EP Rand Morrison. Geist’s CBS colleagues back in New York are able to watch the ceremony on an in-house channel.

“I wasn’t sure how I felt about getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” said Geist after the ceremony. “It’s really cool!”

Willie Geist added, “We’re all thrilled for my dad. He’s always viewed himself as the Clark Gable of off-beat news. Now it’s official. He’s a star.”

Willie Geist’s ‘Freak Show’ Party

TVNewser went to Willie Geist‘s party Friday night to celebrate his book, “American Freak Show.” Geist is the Co-Host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and host of “Way to Early with Willie Geist.”

Some of the notable guests were the author’s father, CBS correspondent Bill Geist, president of MSNBC, Phil Griffin, as well as MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough, and Tamron Hall, Arianna Huffington, former GE CEO Jack Welch, billionaire Mort Zuckerman, CNBC anchor Erin Burnett, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, NBC News president Steve Capus, and MSNBC political analyst Mark Halperin.

Fun, casual, and family-oriented, the party mimicked the spirit of the book, which is a satirical look at American politics and pop culture. In the basement of PJ Clarke’s, Geist’s friends, family, and colleagues ate everything from mini burgers and steak to oysters and lobster rolls.

TVNewser’s video is after the jump with comments from Geist’s dad, Hall, Scarborough, the author himself, and Geist’s uncle Bert. Read more

Who’ll Be Watching Willie Geist’s New Show?: ‘Drug Dealers, Hookers, Drunks Coming Home from Bars’

Geist_7.22.jpgDon’t look for a Starbucks mug on Willie Geist‘s new MSNBC show.

For one thing, the barista barons aren’t sponsoring “Way Too Early With Willie Geist,” which debuts Monday as the 5:30 a.m. lead-in to Starbucks-studded “Morning Joe.”

For another, the G-Man doesn’t drink java.

Geist’s caffeinated beverage of choice is Mountain Dew. He “power slams” a full can before hitting the “Morning Joe” set. “The stuff glows in the dark,” he says.

Do the Dew, Willie!

Geist will fly solo on the live “Too Early” for 30 minutes before rejoining Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Mike Barnicle on “Joe.”

In the “Joe” family, Geist is the bratty son, caught in the crossfire of his arguing parents. “Uncle Mike” Barnicle “is usually hung over,” Geist cracks, “but he takes me outside and plays catch.”

With a newborn son and toddler daughter in a two-bedroom apartment, Geist doesn’t sleep, anyway, so losing more z’s is no big deal. But will viewers follow?

Not that one.

Geist’s father is Bill Geist, a correspondent for CBS News Sunday Morning.
