Filling Up and Hunkering Down in Newsrooms

This is no doubt a familiar site in newsrooms across the Northeast. Air mattresses are being filled up as staffers spend the night — or whenver they can catch some sleep — at work as coverage of Hurricane Sandy continues.

CNBC’s Michelle Caruso-Cabrera who is anchoring primetime coverage with Bill Griffeth Tweeted this picture of “Squawk Box” senior producer Robert Contino who’s got his queen size all ready to go at CNBC HQ in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. (Do the production assistants only get twin size?).

This has become somewhat of a tradition for Caruso-Cabrera, who Tweeted the air mattress situation during Hurricane Irene last year.

The three business networks have turned their focus to severe weather coverage today as Hurricane Sandy forced the close of the stock markets. Bloomberg TV, Fox Business and CNBC have all set special coverage plans for today that focus on the economic impact of the storm, expected to make landfall later today.

Bloomberg TV will shift into special Hurricane Sandy coverage at 1pmET, which is when the storm’s intensity is supposed to increase on the East Coast. Stephanie Ruhle and Erik Schatzker anchor the 1pmET hour, Betty Liu anchors the 2pmET hour and Trish Regan and Adam Johnson anchor from 3-6pmET. Meteorologist Bonnie Schneider is handling weather forecasts.

Fox Business broadcast a special report in place of “Imus in the Morning” this morning, anchored by Dagen McDowell and Connell McShane. FBN’s Robert Gray is in Battery Park and Sandra Smith is at the CME throughout the day. Neil Cavuto will host primetime coverage of the storm tonight beginning at 7pmET.

CNBC will have regular programming until 7pmET. The network is replacing “The Kudlow Report” with a live two-hour special report anchored by Bill Griffeth and Michelle Caruso-Cabrera.

TVNewsers Wear Purple To Show Their ‘Spirit’

People across the country today participated in “Spirit Day,” wearing purple as a sign of support for LGBT youth. The movement, started by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, counted several visible people as champions of the anti-bullying cause: morning anchors, evening anchors and cable anchors on several networks were color-coordinated today.

On the morning shows:

Natalie Morales wonders what it would have been like, had she stayed in banking

“Today” show national correspondent Natalie Morales went back in time Monday, to her first job out of college — high finance.

Morales along with CNBC anchor Bill Griffeth participated in the third annual BGC Partners charity day. BGC is a spin-off of Cantor Fitzgerald, the company that lost 658 employees on September 11, 2001. BGC will donate all of Monday’s revenue to various charities — including Hoboken, New Jersey’s Jubilee Center which Morales and Griffeth support.

According to Hoboken Patch contributor Andrew Tavani, Morales spent two years working in a management training program at Chemical Bank, where her specialty was securities lending. “To me, it’s always interesting to see what might have been had I stayed in banking,” she said.

Morales showered the Jubilee Center and BGC with praise and added that the day offered the children from the Jubilee Center more than just charitable donations and fun photo ops with celebrities. “I think today is an opportunity for them to really kind of learn and appreciate all of the great work these people have put into this effort,” said Morales. “It’s a great lesson for these kids to see, that no matter where their paths in life take them, it’s always important to give back.”

CNBC’s Bill Griffeth Signs Off… For Now

It was an emotional send-off for one of the CNBC originals this afternoon. As we first reported earlier this month, “Power Lunch” co-anchor Bill Griffeth is taking a leave of absence from CNBC for the next year.

Griffeth got a round of applause from the newsroom and hugs from his co-anchors Sue Herera and Michelle Caruso-Cabrera as he told the audience, “Life is a multi-legged stool and your job is only one of those legs. So, do take the time… have the courage, take the time to do something for yourself. I know I am fortunate to take the whole year off, but even if it’s not a whole year, take some time off for yourself.”

TVNewser has learned longtime CNBC anchor Bill Griffeth is taking a leave from CNBC for the next year. CNBC president Mark Hoffman made the announcement in an email to staff. Griffeth, who co-hosts “Power Lunch,” will take the time off to travel, read and do other things people who take leaves of absence do. Watercolors?

Griffeth was part of the team that started the Financial News Network in 1981. He joined CNBC in 1991 when NBC purchased FNN and merged it with CNBC.

His last day, at least for the next year, is Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Jack Reilly, the former Good Morning America executive producer and later vice president of news at CNBC, passed away this morning at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York at the age of 84.

Reilly was VP and managing editor of CNBC from 1994 to 1998. Before that, he was the executive producer of ABC’s Good Morning America from 1986 to 1994. Reilly transformed GMA, a faltering #2 show, into the nation’s top-rated morning show – a position the show held for more than five years. In a note to staff, ABC News president David Westin called Reilly, “a great producer and a true newsman who will live on in our memories and in the deep structure of Good Morning America.”

ABC’s Charlie Gibson called Reilly, “one of the finest people I ever had the good fortune to work with and for. Modest, shy, self-effacing, not an ounce of inflated ego, and yet a cracker jack producer who understood when he should intrude, and when to stand back and let others do their work.”

Before ABC, Reilly was one of the founding producers at Entertainment Tonight. From 1969 to 1978 was the EP of Group W’s “The Mike Douglas Show” and later, the “David Frost Show.” He was president of Group W Television from 1972 to 1975.

Reilly’s daughters Linda and Stephanie took their father to St. Vincent’s just yesterday afternoon. The cause of death was related to a fall he took a few weeks ago, which lead to internal bleeding.

Adds Gibson, “I think all of us loved the guy almost in spite of his reluctance to be loved.” We’re told CNBC anchors Sue Herera and Bill Griffeth will mention Reilly’s passing during the 1pmET hour of Power Lunch.

Services are planned for next week at St. Malachy’s Church in Manhattan.

Ron Insana Returns to CNBC

CNBC veteran Ron Insana has rejoined the network as a senior analyst. Insana’s first appearance was during today’s Power Lunch.

“Look who’s back?” said Bill Griffeth, “Ron Insana.”

“Seems like an interesting time to get back into the market,” said Insana, adding, “Most of my timing over the last three years has not entirely been in my control.”

Insana left a primary anchor slot on the network in 2006, for a senior analyst role while also forming Insana Capital Partners. Insana Partners ceased operations in August 2008 when Insana joined a Connecticut-based hedge fund. That move precluded him from appearing on CNBC.

And it appears CNBCers are happy to have him back. During a tease of his segment, Insana got a “Whoo-hoo! Yay” from Power Lunch co-co-co-anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera.
