After ‘This Week,’ Dennis Rodman Cancels TV Appearances

Following his…memorable… appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman apparently had a number of other media appearances lined up. The key word there is had, because he seems to have been canceling them.

After “This Week.” Rodman was supposed to be interviewed by ESPN’s Bob Ley for an upcoming episode of “Outside The Lines.” As Those Guys Have All The Fun author James Andrew Miller noted, however, it didn’t play out:

Rodman was supposed to be interviewed this a.m. by @bobleyespn for OTL after his interview w/ @gstephanopoulos but skipped out on @espn

— James Andrew Miller (@ESPNBook) March 3, 2013

Today, Rodman was supposed to appear on CNN’s “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer, but as John Berman reported at 11:13, the basketball star “decided to cancel.” Berman then hosted Fran Townsend and John Avlon, who proceeded to trash Rodman for calling Kim Jong Un a “friend.”

Will Rodman turn up anywhere else on TV? We are keeping our ears to the ground, let us know if you hear of any bookings.

Ex-WABC Sports Anchor Pleads Guilty, Avoids Jail Time

Marvell Scott pleaded guilty Tuesday to child endangerment and will get 20 days of community service as part of a plea deal.

The former WABC sports anchor admitted that he inappropriately touched a 14-year-old runaway during a July 2008 incident in his Times Square apartment. Scott faced up to seven years in jail if convicted at trial. The misdemeanor will be wiped from Scott’s record in six months, provided he completes his community service.

“On or about June 5, 2008, inside my then-apartment … I acted in a manner likely to be injurious to the welfare of a child by inappropriately touching her,” Scott told a Manhattan Supreme Court judge. “[Afterward] I learned she was 14 years old.” continued…

Barkley Rips Heat, Calls Their Fans 'The Worst'

The sun rises in the east and Charles Barkley expresses disgust for the Miami Heat and their bandwagon fanbase. Appearing on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000, Barkley said fans of the Heat are ‘the worst’ and rather lukewarm when it comes to making noise.

“Yeah they have the worst fans. No question. It’s not even loud in there. You’re at the game and you are like, ‘Man this place isn’t even loud.’ At least when you go to Chicago, it’s loud in there, it’s crazy down in Dallas but it’s not even loud in Miami.”

The Heat went from zeroes to heroes in the course of one season, so it’s not surprising their fanbase is rife with dispassionate frontrunners.

Barkley, meanwhile, said he can’t bring himself to root for Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Co.

“Listen, if the Miami Heat were playing the Washington Generals I would pick the Washington Generals,” Barkley said. “It’s something about that team that annoys me. They just a whiny bunch and I can’t root for them.”

Earlier in the playoffs, TNT had to move its pregame show from outside the arena in Miami to inside the venue, to separate Barkley from the swarming masses who engaged his attention by screaming obscenities and throwing the occasional towel. Barkley in turn shared a double middle-finger salute with Heat fans, assuring the discourse remained on an equal level.

Did the NFL Hurts its Negotiating Position?

On Thursday, word leaked that ESPN would pay the NFL almost $2 billion per year for the television rights to Monday Night Football. Win, win, win, right?

Eh, maybe not. There’s that whole labor negotiation thing, and one of the major arguments coming out of the owners camp is that they aren’t making enough money. It gets harder to make that case when the Worldwide Leader hands over a 40-percent increase in fees.

“It’s a good news/bad news situation for the owners,” said one insider told the New York Post. “The owners are crying poor and it’s going to strengthen the Players Association’s stance that the owners aren’t as bad off as they say they are. “The owners are, in essence, demanding that the players take an 18-percent pay cut across the board. For them to turn around and get this [money], they definitely don’t come off looking good in this.”

The deal is good news for the players, who get 60 percent of the fees. But there are a lot of players and not a lot of owners. A lot of 40 percent is much more than a little of 60 percent. Bob Kraft can cry poor all he wants, but it will fall upon deaf ears.

Enjoy these playoffs, ladies and gentlemen. It’s going to be awhile before you see NFL uniforms again.

More Hologram Technology Coming to Cable

First it was CNN’s tomograms — not holograms — used during election night last year (remember Jessica Yellin playing the part of a Jedi Knight?) Well now ESPN is getting in the game. B&C’s Glen Dickson reports on the technology which could hit the ESPN airwaves this spring. Dickson went to Bristol to see a test:

ESPN assembled longtime anchor Chris Berman and EVP of technology Chuck Pagano in a conference room, seated some eight feet apart, with a series of large HD displays behind them. Then longtime anchor Bob Ley magically appeared, seated on a chair between them, in hologram form on the TV screens.

“This is just an example of the cutting edge technology that will save us so much money on airfare for the World Cup,” quipped Ley, who will host ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup from South Africa. Ley, who was actually seated in a green-screen set down the hall from Pagano and Berman.

Ley’s virtual appearance onscreen was remarkably realistic, without the significant image blurring seen in hologram technology used by CNN on Election Night last fall.
