Surprise 50th Party for Joe Scarborough

Mika Brzezinski, MSNBC president Phil Griffin and the UAE’s Ambassador to the U.S. Yousef Al Otaiba threw a 50th birthday bash for Joe Scarborough last night in Washington, DC.

According to Politico, Scarborough thought they were coming to D.C. for a speech, instead, on the rooftop of 101 Constitution Ave., Scarborough was treated to a “this is your life” with friends and family. “We have your life covered here completely, from Boston to Los Angeles to Florida to New York to Washington. Everybody is here,” said Brzezinski.

“You can sit back and relax and just hang with your family because, actually, we are going to talk tonight — and you’re not going to say a word.”

Among the guests: NBC/MSNBC’s Willie Geist, David Gregory, Luke Russert, Mike Barnicle, Andrea Mitchell, Kelly O’Donnell and Lawrence O’Donnell. “Morning Joe” EP Alex Korson and former EP Chris Licht and Licht’s boss’s boss at CBS, Jeff Fager. Also, Walter Isaacson, Dan Senor, Nicolle Wallace, Bob Woodward and more.

Sean Hannity And Bob Woodward Talk ‘Regret’ Comments

On Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Bob Woodward appeared to talk about his book, and the “you’ll regret this” comments that have been making the rounds over the last few days. While Sean Hannity was his usual bombastic self, Woodward spent a good chunk of the interview trying to tone things down:

“People are saying this was a threat, or I was saying it was a threat, I haven’t used that language, but that isn’t how to operate in the White House.” Woodward said.

“Did you think the President lied?” Hannity asked. “No, I am not going to use words like that, I think we need to tone down the rhetoric here,” Woodward replied.

And on it went, it was a very interesting interview.

Politico: Gene Sperling Was ‘Very Senior’ White House Official Who Threatened Bob Woodward

Veteran reporter, author and DC insider Bob Woodward told Wolf Blitzer last night on CNN that a “very senior” White House official threatened him over some of his reporting on the sequester. When Blitzer asked who it was, Woodward wouldn’t say. But this morning Politico got its hands on an email back and forth between Woodward and the White House official. It turns out it is Gene Sperling, the president’s economic adviser. Here’s a portion of a Feb. 22 email from Sperling to Woodward:

“But I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying … that Potus [President of the United States] asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim.”

Sperling, above appearing on “Erin Burnett: OutFront” Monday evening, was apologetic in his email to Woodward over a conversation on the subject earlier in the day: “My apologies again for raising my voice on the call with you. Feel bad about that and truly apologize. Gene.”

Woodward’s response was cordial as well.

‘Very Senior’ White House Official Told Bob Woodward: ‘You Will Regret Doing This’

Bob Woodward has been covering the White House longer than some White House staffers have been alive. But today on “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” the veteran Washington Post reporter says he was threatened by “a very senior person” at the White House over some of his reporting about the sequester.

Woodward told Blitzer, “It was said very clearly, you will regret doing this.” “Who sent that e-mail to you?” asked Blitzer.

Woodward: Well, I’m not going to say.

Blitzer: Was it a senior person at the White House?

Woodward: A very senior person. And just as a matter — I mean, it makes me very uncomfortable to have the White House telling reporters, you’re going to regret doing something that you believe in. And even though we don’t look at it that way, you do look at it that way. And I think if Barack Obama knew that was part of the communication’s strategy — let’s hope it’s not a strategy, but it’s a tactic that somebody’s employed, and said, look, we don’t go around trying to say to reporters, if you, in an honest way, present something we don’t like, that, you know, you’re going to regret this. And just — it’s Mickey Mouse.

K.T. McFarland: Here’s What Happened When I Spoke to General Petraeus

Fox News contributor K.T. McFarland took to FoxNews.com to discuss the imbroglio involving General Petraeus. In case you missed it, Bob Woodward obtained audio of McFarland talking to Petraeus, and mentioning that Fox News CEO Roger Ailes wanted him to run for President.

In her column, McFarland explains the circumstances surrounding the incident:

On my way out, I casually told him, I’ll give the general your regards, shall I? Roger smiled and replied something to the effect of, tell him if they don’t make him chairman of the joint chiefs, he ought to jump into the presidential race to stir things up. I know now that Roger was joking, but at the time, I wasn’t sure…

As he did for his last two books, journalist Bob Woodward is giving his first interview for his new book The Price of Politics to ABC’a Diane Sawyer. Woodward will speak to Sawyer on Monday, September 10, with excerpts running on “World News” and “Nightline.” He will appear in-studio on “GMA” the next day.

A sign of things to come? The NBCUniversal News Group is touting special coverage of the terrible drought the U.S. is currently facing. NBC news, CNBC, MSNBC, The Weather Channel, Telemundo and NBCNews.com are all planning special coverage for tomorrow, with an eye toward their particular audiences (i.e. financial impact on CNBC, Latino impact on Telemundo).

Fox News is launching a new iPad app, “You Decide 2012 Map” that let’s users predict how the electoral college will shake up during the 2012 election. Mashable reports: “If you’d like an expert opinion along with your own, former George W. Bush advisor Karl Rove and former Howard Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi — both Fox News contributors — deliver their predictions and analysis through the map.” Video of Rove, Trippi and Bret Baier using the app after the jump.

Former ABC Newser Bob Wheelock has joined Al Jazeera English as executive producer for the Americas. Wheelock, who was senior producer of ABC’s special events unit, has also been a senior producer, broadcast producer and London bureau chief for NBC News.

Candy Crowley, CNN’s chief political correspondent, received the University of Kansas’ William Allen White journalism citation Friday. Previous recipients include Walter Cronkite, Bernie Shaw, Bob Woodward and Cokie Roberts.

WNET has hired Julie Anderson as executive producer of documentaries and development. Anderson, who is up for an Academy Award in the short documentary film category this year, starts tomorrow.

Is Roger Ailes Penning an Autobiography? Fox News Responds

New York‘s Gabriel Sherman writes today that Fox News CEO Roger Ailes is working on an autobiography.

When contacted for comment, a Fox News spokesperson told TVNewser, “There is one source with direct knowledge of Roger’s plans — and that’s Roger himself. Since Roger has never spoken to Gabe in his life, we continue to be fascinated with Gabe’s uncanny ability to read his mind.”

As Sherman notes in his item, he is working on a book about Ailes, and has spoken to a number of people that have worked with the Fox News CEO over the years.

Ailes’s agent, D.C. super-lawyer Bob Barnett, is working out the deal with Murdoch-owned HarperCollins to publish the book. Several publishing sources told me that Ailes would get a $3–4 million advance for the book, which is being co-authored by Fox News contributor Jim Pinkerton. Ailes and Pinkerton go way back. The two worked together on George H.W. Bush’s 1988 presidential campaign.

Writing a Book? Talk to Diane Sawyer

As we told you yesterday, Jaycee Dugard‘s book, “A Stolen Life” sold more than 175,000 copies in its first day.

The success of the book can be attributed in part to Diane Sawyer‘s two-hour interview with Dugard Sunday, which was watched by 15 million people.

In addition to Dugard, Sawyer sat down with Bob Woodward and Donald Rumsfeld for their first interviews during the promotion for their books. Both debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list. It is widely expected that Dugard’s will too for the Sunday, July 24 list.

Greta Van Susteren Interviews Bob Woodward

Last night Fox News Channel anchor Greta Van Susteren interviewed authior and journalist Bob Woodward over his latest book, Obama’s Wars.

The interview finally happened after a bit of controversy. Last week Van Susteren canceled the Woodward interview because his publisher wouldn’t send her review copy. Two days later, after a call from Woodward and a specially-delivered copy, the interview was back on.

Unless you are active in the TV news blogosphere, you never would have guessed there was behind the scenes wrangling:

MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on the ‘Absurdist,’ World of News, and Advice from Keith Olbermann

Tonight at 10 PM, MSNBC will premiere the newest addition to its primetime lineup, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.” Following “Countdown” at 8 PM and “The Rachel Maddow Show” at 9 PM, “The Last Word” completes MSNBC’s primetime in a sense, as the network finally puts a live, original show in the 10 PM hour, joining competitors CNN and Fox News.

Tonight’s premiere will feature an interview with Vice President Joe Biden, but it will also see O’Donnell getting advice on how to host a primetime show from MSNBC’s most prominent primetime talent: Keith Olbermann.

“I will be getting advice on hosting the show from Keith tonight, live,” O’Donnell tells TVNewser. “He is going to appear on my first show, as he should, because Keith created the ratings platform in primetime at MSNBC that has made the creation of the other two shows in primetime possible.”

Indeed, O’Donnell, hardly a TV novice, noted that at the end of the day, the driving factor in television is ratings.

Greta Van Susteren Un-Cancels Bob Woodward Interview

Earlier this week Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren canceled a scheduled interview with journalist Bob Woodward about his new book Obama’s Wars. Van Susteren said the publisher wouldn’t be able to get her a review copy in time, and she would rather cancel the interview than go in unprepared.

Yesterday, Van Susteren once again took to GretaWire with an update. It seems Woodward called ehr and promised to get a review copy to her ASAP:

I thanked Bob for the call and said – since I now will have the book with time to read it - that I would like to do the interview as planned. He said that I did not have to do the interview (that he was not calling in essence to put pressure on me) but I want to do the interview and he agreed.

Don’t you just love a happy ending?

Still, Van Susteren could have secured a copy the way the other networks did: by buying a copy from a bookstore willing to waive the embargo on the sale date.

Greta Van Susteren Cancels Bob Woodward Interview

“On the Record” host Greta Van Susteren just posted to GretaWire, saying that she canceled an interview with veteran journalist Bob Woodward, who was scheduled to speak about his new book, Obama’s Wars.

Why?

I just cancelled a Bob Woodward new book interview because the publisher won’t get me a copy to READ BEFORE I do the interview. ON THE RECORD at ten is not the Home Shopping Channel – I actually read the books before I do the interview out of respect for the viewers

Her decision is understandable, with many television hosts wanting to be informed about a book before interviewing the author.

While the book has been a regular subject on the cable news channels over the last few days, those discussions have focused on excerpts that appeared in the New York Times and USA Today, rather than from the book itself. In other words, as of this morning, it does not appear that any of the cable news channels have a review copy of the book.

Diane Sawyer To Interview Bob Woodward About ‘Obama’s Wars’

“ABC World News” anchor Diane Sawyer has the first television interview with author and journalist Bob Woodward, who is promoting his upcoming book Obama’s Wars.

The book is due to be released September 27, and Sawyer’s interview will air that day. Excerpts will also run on “Good Morning America” and “Nightline.”

Woodward, of course, is one-half of the team that brought down President Richard Nixon during Watergate. His previous book, The War Within, focused on the Bush Administration’s internal dialogue and debate about the Iraq war.

Update: Woodward will also appear live on “GMA” Sept. 28 to discuss the book.

Brian Williams to Receive Cronkite Award

Brian Williams has been named this year’s recipient of the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.

Williams will receive the 26th Cronkite Award from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at a ceremony Nov. 18.

Cronkite Dean Christopher Callahan called Williams “a great journalist who covers the news with depth and understanding in the best tradition of Walter Cronkite.”

“As someone who grew up idolizing Walter and having come to know him in adult life, I know that there is no greater name in our profession,” Williams said. “I only hope I am worthy of the meaning and tradition of this honor. Walter Cronkite is the only reason I entered the field of television journalism.”

Previous Cronkite Award recipients include Tom Brokaw, Jane Pauley, Katharine Graham, Bob Woodward, Al Neuharth and Ted Turner.

Just last month, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric won another award named for Cronkite – the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism from USC’s Annenberg School.
