Professional Athletes Explain Themselves on the Radio

Dave Kohl at Major League Programs Blog points out an interesting phenomenon of athletes bypassing newspapers for radio programs. The latest example: Chris Bosh talking directly to the people to Toronto in an effort to clear up some misconstrued comments.

It seems that last Tuesday in Boston Bosh commented to a Toronto Sun reporter to the effect of “It’s all about being on TV, and if a player has great statistics and you don’t see it, it doesn’t matter”. (Not exact quote.) It seems those comments were taken by Raptors fans as a slap against the Raptors, for which Bosh had been the marquee player until joining LeBron and the Heat this summer. Even though Bosh no longer plays for Toronto, he and his agent reportedly contacted Toronto’s FAN 590 and Bosh went on the air last Thursday (Oct. 28) to explain the comments to host Doug Farraway. Bosh indicated that his comments were not intended to be a reflection on the fans and media coverage in Toronto.

Bill Simmons Makes His PTI Co-Host Debut

Bill Simmons, the face of ESPN.com, co-hosted Pardon The Interruption for the first time ever on Tuesday alongside Tony Kornheiser.

Simmons appeared to be more comfortable on camera as the episode progressed and suffered only one awkward moment when his earpiece fell out while he was talking. He will be filling in for Michael Wilbon for the rest of the week.

“Just taped my first PTI episode, “Simmons tweeted shortly before the show aired at 5:30 p.m. ET. “Tried my best, only 1 big mistake but it turned out be funny. 4 days of this, by Friday I will be mediocre!”

There were rumors that Simmons was going to make his PTI debut last summer but it turned out to be bad information.

Tuesday wasn’t the first time that Kornheiser and Simmons have worked together on camera. In June they participated in an ESPN NBA free agency roundtable with Michael Wilbon and Dan Le Batard.

It makes you wonder if he will see more of Simmons on television as part of his new deal with ESPN.

Shannon Sharpe Takes Leave Of Absence From NFL Today

NFL Today co-host Shannon Sharpe will take a leave of absence from the CBS Sunday pregame show due to a sexual assault allegation.

“I have decided to step away from ‘The NFL Today’ until this matter is resolved,” Sharpe said in a statement released by CBS. Sharpe appeared on the NFL Today last Sunday.

Depending on how long it takes for the court to resolve this legal matter, Sharpe could be off the network for the entire season.

Last week Sharpe was slapped with a temporary restraining order by Michele Bundy, who claimed the former NFL tight end forced her to have sex with him and threatened her life.

Atlanta’s Fulton County Superior Court ordered Sharpe to remain at least 200 yards away from Bundy and her immediate family at all times. A hearing in the case is set for Monday.

“We accept Shannon’s decision,” CBS Sports spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said in a statement. “Beyond that, we decline to comment on a pending legal matter.”
