“While we’re disappointed with the news, we are very proud of the hard work that the ‘Rock Center’ team put into the program each week,” NBC News Group chief Pat Fili-Krushel wrote in a note to staff this afternoon. “Rock Center” was given a 3-year commitment when it launched in the Fall of 2011. When it comes to a close, it will have run for 20 months.

The show never caught on with viewers and was moved five times on the NBC schedule in its first year alone.

“I would like to thank Brian, Alex, David and the entire “Rock Center” team for their efforts. The show will be missed,” writes Fili-Krushel.

There’s no word on the fate of the correspondents and staff of “Rock Center” or whether layoffs will be necessary. Some staffers will likely be offered positions in other areas of the NBC News Group.

TVNewser hears that the interview has been on the schedule for some time, before news of the surgery was revealed by the New York Post this morning. The full interview–which will highlight the rebuilding of the Jersey Shore–will air next week on “Rock Center.”

Christie has been pretty close with the team from MSNBC and NBC News recently, with a number of appearances on programs for both the cable channel and broadcast network.

He appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” last Monday, and will be the guest co-host of the 8 AM hour of “Today” on may 24, live from the Jersey Shore.

In addition to Roberts, the morning shows are well represented: “GMA” anchor George Stephanopoulos is #57, while “Today” show co-hosts Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer are #85 and #97, respectively.

The three evening news anchors make the list –ABC’s Diane Sawyer at #25, NBC’s Brian Williams at #29 and CBS’ Scott Pelley at #63. ABC’s Barbara Walters (#34), Katie Couric (#37) and Christiane Amanpour (#56) are also among the most trusted.

From the cable news landscape, CNN’s Sanjay Gupta is #17 and  Anderson Cooper is #50. HLN’s Dr. Drew Pinsky is #90 and Fox News anchor Shepard Smith rounds out the list at #100.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was on top as usual, up +2% in viewers while down -4% in the demo. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was up +4% in viewers and down -4% in the demo. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was once again up the most in viewers: +6% but down the most in the demo: -6% .

But only Pelley’s newscast has grown in both ratings measurements compared to the same week last year, up +12% in Total Viewers and +5% in A25-54 viewers. “World News” is up +3% in Total Viewers and down -4% in the A25-54 demographic and “Nightly” is flat in both ratings measurements.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was the most-watched and compared to the same week last year was up +18% in total viewers and +35% in younger viewers. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was up +19% / +24%, respectively, while “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” showed the most viewer growth: +26%, while also up +21% in the demo.

Friday’s broadcasts on all three networks are excluded from the weekly averages as the newscasts were effectively pre-empted by the breaking news of the capture of the second suspect in the bombings.

Shots were heard in the area by several correspondents, including CNN’s Drew Griffin and ABC’s Linsey Davis, around 7pmET. On CNN, Griffin recounted what he had heard for Wolf Blitzer.”I just heard what sounded like multiple assault rifle shots to me. Rapidly fired, and then all of a sudden it stopped,” Griffin said.

Shortly after Griffin’s report, the CNN video feed focused on a shot of the media stand-up locations in Watertown that showed NBC’s Lester Holt readying for a live shot (pictured right).

In addition to the coverage on the cable networks, which has continued throughout the day, all three broadcast networks are on the air with special reports that have extended through the evening newscasts.

Around 7:15pmET, NBC dipped into the feed from New England Cable News and a reporter could clearly be heard saying, “we don’t know shit.”

“Well that was a fortuitous time to dip into New England Cable News. We apologize for the language we inadvertently aired during what was a mix-up of communications on their part,” Brian Williams said immediately.

And it may be a long night: around 7:45pmET, Williams read an email from a law enforcement source on the air that said “Believe it’s him. Slow going here.”  Stay tuned.

More, 8:33 p.m.: On ABC News, Diane Sawyer talked to a resident of the neighborhood who is a friend of the man that tipped the FBI to the suspect’s location in the boat. “He looked up and noticed something was off about his boat, so he got his ladder, and he put his ladder up on the side of the boat and climbed up, and then he saw blood on it, and he thought he saw what was a body,” he said.

More, 8:42p.m.: NBC News is broadcasting WHDH’s special coverage. The NBC affiliate is reporting that the suspect has been taken into custody alive. NBC confirms; ABC News, CBS News follow minutes later.

On cable, Fox News and MSNBC reported the suspect’s arrest at 8:42 p.m., followed by CNN at 8:45 p.m.

By 10:05 President Obama appeared in the briefing room grieving those lost and thanking the people of Boston and first responders. Also, a message for the media — both social and traditional: “In this age of instant reporting, tweets, and blogs, there’s a temptation to latch on to any bit of information, sometimes to jump to conclusions. But when a tragedy like this happens with public safety at risk and the stakes so high, it’s important that we do this right. That’s why we have investigations. That’s why we relentlessly gather the facts.”

All the broadcast networks are in continuing coverage. “20/20″ on ABC, “Rock Center” on NBC and a special report on CBS. At 10:48pm, CBS News airs the first picture of the suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the ground, getting medical care. “The police commissioner believes that he was shot in the firefight last night and had apparently been bleeding for 20 hours before he was found in the boat,” said Scott Pelley.

The networks are preparing for extended coverage throughout the day and CBS News has already scheduled a primetime special at 9pmET anchored by Scott Pelley. Also, “Evening News” will be expanded to an hour.

More: “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” will expand to a full hour tonight. “Rock Center” will dedicate the full live hour (10pmET/9pmCT) to the investigation.

More: ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer” will also be an hour. Elizabeth Vargas anchors a special edition of “20/20″ from Boston tonight.

More: Fox News is preempting “The Five” today, instead Bill Hemmer will anchor the hour from Boston. Shepard Smith will anchor his shows from Watertown and Greta Van Susteren will anchor from 10pm-Midnight also from Watertown.

More: CNN’s will be live until at least 1am, starting at 7pm, in this order: Erin Burnett, Anderson Cooper, Piers Morgan, Cooper, Burnett, Morgan.

The first reports began coming in after 1am. Networks were cautious of not connecting the shooting of the MIT officer with the search for the bombing suspects. CNN International broke in to CNN/U.S. at 1:13am. MSNBC’s Mara Schiavocampo broke in at 1:18 with the news along with correspondent Kerry Sanders. At 1:24am Fox News’ Marianne Rafferty broke in to a re-air of “On the Record” with news of the MIT shooting.

At 2:24am, as it was becoming clear the holdup, carjacking and MIT incident were related to the blast investigation, CNN’s Jake Tapper held up his iPad to show new photos of the suspects that he’d been emailed.

ABC’s overnight show World News Now kept viewers up to date throughout the night with help from affiliates. George Stephanopoulos anchored his first special report for ABC at 4:30am. NBC’s Lester Holt anchored an NBC News special report around 3:30amET and CBS News broadcast a special report at 4:40am with Anne Marie Green.

More, 8:27am: CNN’s Jake Tapper and John Berman, anchoring coverage, are talking to a Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School friend of 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the suspect still on the loose: “To think he’s capable of something like this is beyond belief.”

More: 8:35am: A Fox News is trained on a home in Watertown, MA where local and FBI officials have guns drawn. “Our cameraman is being told to back off,” said Brian Kilmeade.

FNC’s Griff Jenkins was near the firefight last night and this morning explained his rental car “is in the middle of the crime scene.”

More, 9:12am: On CNN, via an interview with CBS owned station WBZ-TV, the uncle of the brothers says his 19-year-old nephew had called another relative last night after his older brother was killed and said, “Forgive me and from now on we will be together.” After reporters apologized to him, the uncle added: “I’m sorry too, if he did this, I’m sorry too. I can’t believe it. It’s so crazy. It’s not possible. When I heard this on TV news, I was thinking how can it be like this?”

Update: ABC and CBS have expanded their morning shows beyond 9am as the manhunt for the 19-year-old suspect continues. NBC’s 9am hour of “Today” is also devoted to the breaking news. At one point, new ABC News correspondent Byron Pitts was reporting live as police officers moved him and other reporters away from an active location. A police officer could be heard telling the reporters: “Come on. Let’s go. Off the sidewalk, please. Around the corner.”

More, 9:35am: ABC showed what it called exclusive video of a bullet-riddled SUV being taken away by investigators. Brian Rossreported: “Our cameraman caught a shot of that car being towed away, a Mercedes SUV that the two brothers hijacked — carjacked at a gas station in Cambridge near Memorial Drive.” Explosive devices were reportedly thrown from car by the suspects. The driver was released by the brothers, unharmed.

More, 10:50am: All networks have their cameras trained on a neighborhood in Watertown, MA. CNN has said it is putting programming on a 5-second delay as local and federal authorities have their guns drawn imploring media to stay back.

More, 12:24pm: On CNN, correspondent Deborah Feyerick reported that, after being pushed back from an area in Watertown, police are now allowing reporters to return to their original positions closer to the search scene.

More, 1pm: CBS special report ends. Diane Sawyer continues on ABC; Brian Williams picks up across NBC.

More, 1:45pm: ABC’s Bianna Golodryga, who speaks fluent Russian, spoke to the father of the two bombing suspects, Anzor Tsarnaev, on three separate occasions today. Tsarnaev, who lives in Russia, tells Golodryga that neither the U.S. government nor the Russian government has contacted him at that time.

More, 2:09pm: Anderson Cooper cuts away from remarks from the suspects’ aunt in Toronto, who claims her nephews are innocent. “Clearly she is in a state of denial or not really aware of the whole impact of what has happened here, what is going on,” Cooper said. Megyn Kelly comes to the same conclusion on Fox News: “That’s the aunt,” she said.

Not only is Fox News getting knocked (though CNN is taking the brunt) for inaccurate coverage from Boston Wednesday, the network is also being criticized for not covering Pres. Obama’s Rose Garden statement following the Senate defeat of a key piece of new gun legislation.

At 5:41pm, as the broadcast and cable networks were all carrying the remarks, “The Five” co-host Greg Gutfeld took viewers to the White House to listen in. 20 seconds later, producers returned to the panel show: “That’s all we are doing?” said Gutfeld, seeming to question the decision.

NYT’s Brian Stelter expands on that moment to write about the glaring differences in the gun debate on two cable news channels: Fox News and MSNBC. Writes Stelter:

The decision not to show the president’s angry rejoinder to the Senate vote — or to cover the vote in any real detail an hour earlier — was the latest example of Fox’s evident lack of interest in the gun violence debate that has captivated so many other media outlets.

MSNBC president Phil Griffin calls Fox’s decision, “a disgrace,” adding, “This is one of the critical issues of the day, and MSNBC’s been on it.”

Fox News, which rarely lets a competitive swipe get by, responds, “Phil’s network of partisan pundits have to rely on the talents of Brian Williams and NBC News to cover basic news events. So him calling anything a disgrace in regards to news coverage is ironic considering he oversees one daily.”

But this is yet another political issue — no matter how firmly you believe it shouldn’t be political — that is being covered contrastingly on these networks. Even if Fox News has been downplaying coverage of the gun debate, and even if MSNBC has been playing it up, Fox News’s Gutfeld seemed to recognize the merit of hearing the President out. At the end of “The Five,” Gutfeld apologized: “I want to apologize for cutting out of the Obama presser. I think it should have been handled better.”

If you were watching Fox, here’s what you missed the president say: “This effort is not over.” So, yes. There will be many more opportunities to cover, or not cover, the gun legislation debate. Immigration anyone?

That didn’t slow the reporting on CNN and Fox News. By 1:50pm, Wolf Blitzer, along with King, was reporting an arrest had been made. Fox News, too, reported an arrest. NBC News went so far as to produce a network special report, anchored by Brian Williams — which aired on MSNBC — with Pete Williams again reporting, “No arrest has been made.”

Williams added, “It’s rather confusing at this point. Partly because of the nomenclature here. One person’s item of interest is another person’s suspect. I would take a step back and say whatever is going on, it is a promising development.”

> Update: At 2:21 on Fox News, Megyn Kelly reported: “This is the situation we find ourselves in, folks. We got different law enforcement officers telling us different things. Two said to (Foxnews.com) that an arrest has been made. And now two are telling us no arrest has been made.”

> Update: At 2:28 on CNN, former FBI assistant director Tom Fuentes contradicted CNN’s reporting: “I have actually three separate sources, but two that are very highly placed and close to the investigation that have just told me that there has been no arrest, and, in fact, a suspect has not been identified by name yet, that they have — they’re looking for someone, but don’t have anybody in custody yet and don’t have an identification.”

> Update: John King on CNN at 2:46: “Part of this reflects on us, part of it also reflects on people you talk to, reliable sources, and Fran Townsend is one of our finest people, Boston law enforcement source saying we got it. When you have people who have been reliable sources if they’re ahead of themselves, we need to circle with them. We need to figure this out ourselves.”

All three evening newscasts were expanded Monday after a pair of explosions killed at least two people at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

The newscasts began shortly after President Obama addressed the nation from the White House press briefing room at 6:10pmET. NBC’s Brian Williams, ABC’s Diane Sawyer and CBS’ Scott Pelley had been anchoring coverage on their respective networks since the news broke shortly after 3pmET. ABC News and NBC News took brief breaks from their respective special reports just before the official start of the evening newscasts at 6:30pmET.

CBS News had Terrell Brown reporting from the scene and Don Dahler reporting from Massachusetts General Hospital. At the beginning of “Evening News,” correspondent John Miller took a few minutes to “clarify all these reports we’re seeing about a suspect in the media.” Saying he wanted to “proceed very carefully from here on out,” Miller reported that the person who was detained is a Saudi national who was seen running from the scene. “That may mean a lot, that may mean nothing at all,” Miller cautioned, noting that many people were running away from the blasts.

On NBC News, Williams was joined by Katy Tur in Boston, Chuck Todd from Washington D.C. and Pete Williams on the Boston police investigation. Williams interviewed an eyewitness, Serdar Ozturk, who saw the explosion from the finish line. “People’s faces instantly changed from smile to tears, and fear,” he told Williams. “People started running for their lives.”

ABC News had reports from senior national correspondent Jim Avila, senior Justice correspondent Pierre Thomas and Linsey Davis from the scene. Sawyer also checked in with Alex Perez in Chicago and Cecelia Vega in Los Angeles about security precautions in place in those two cities. “World News” ended with a montage of still photos from the scene. “We thank you so much for watching tonight,” Sawyer said. “Boston, as you know, is one of America’s great cities, filled with resilience and spirit. So on this day, when something terrible happened, we wanted to remind you of all those who rushed to help.”

All three networks have more extended coverage planned. Williams will anchor a special report at 10pmET on NBC, Terry Moran will anchor “Nightline” live at 12:35amET on ABC, and Pelley remained on the air with “Evening News” through 8pmET.
