Jean Pascal, Bernard Hopkins Mix It Up At Presser

It’s been a while since we’ve had a good boxing press conference, but Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins delivered Monday in Montreal.

Pascal, 28 (and young enough to be Hopkins’ son) questioned whether the 46-year-old veteran was using performance-enhancing drugs and demanded a blood test.

The one thing you don’t want to do is question Hopkins. Both fighters had to be separated after some pushing and shoving. continued…

Does Jimmer Fredette Really Have Hops?

Who says white men can’t jump?

Jimmer Fredette is featured on this week’s Sports Illustrated cover, in what appears to be an awesome photo of the BYU guard.

But Kevin Blackistone, who filled in for Michael Wilbon on Pardon the Interruption, is calling shenanigans when it comes to the photo. During the “Fill in the Blank” segment, Blackistone said he thinks the cover was “photoshopped.” continued…

Brian Wilson Back On-Air, and Keeping it in the FOX Family

Three months after veteran journalist Brian Wilson left Fox News Channel, he has returned to the airwaves - with two appearances this month as a news analyst for Washington, DC Fox O&O WTTG-TV. It’s the station where he worked for twelve years before joining FNC in 1998. “It was lovely to get the opportunity to go back on a Fox-owned station,” Wilson tells our sister site TVSpy.

So does Wilson’s continued relationship with Fox shed some light on the nature of his departure from FNC, which garnered headlines back in September?

The SportsNewser Interview: Gus Johnson

If you ask just about any sports fan under the age of 35 to name their favorite play-by-play announcer, the choice would be simple.

Gus Johnson.

The exuberant Johnson, who splits his time between CBS Sports, Showtime and the Big Ten Network, has the uncanny ability to make any sporting event that much more exciting.

Johnson spoke to SportsNewser about the biggest storyline at the halfway point of the NFL season and the top three moments during his broadcasting career.

SportsNewser: How aware are you of your popularity? For any sports fan under 35, you’re a God to them.

Gus Johnson: I’m really appreciative to the responses I have got from some of the fans. It’s really cool. It’s kind of overwhelming at times because you really don’t realize what kind of impact you have on people that are watching the game.

Brian Wilson ‘Unleashed’: ‘I Can Tell You Some Things That I Have Been Wanting to Say for Years’

“I truly enjoyed the 25 years I worked under the News Corp. banner,” former FNCer Brian Wilson tells TVNewser. “But it’s time to do some new things.”

After last week’s news that the veteran journalist had left the network, Wilson announced that he’s founded his own firm.

Right Tone Communications will focus on media training and video production, among other areas. “I couldn’t be more excited about this new adventure,” he tells us.

Wilson also has signed with a booking agency for public speaking gigs.

In a press release from The Grable Group, Wilson calls himself an “unrestricted free agent.”

“I can tell you some things that I have been wanting to say for years. Think of it as Brian Wilson unleashed… Trust me,” he continues. “These speeches will be many things, but they will not be boring.”

Wilson says he can talk about topics such as “Washington, DC: How Things REALLY Work in News and Politics” and “What I Saw and Learned During 35 Years in Television News.”

Updates on FNC’s Brian Wilson and MSNBC’s David Shuster

Our sister blog FishbowlDC has updates on two DC-based newsers who have not been on the air recently.

First there is Fox News Channel’s Brian Wilson, who it seems has been shown the door at the cable network. “Friends of Wilson say he doesn’t expect to return,” FishbowlDC writes.

Politico’s Playbook reports that Wilson is starting his own production company:

After 25 years with the company, I have decided it’s time to move on. It’s been a great run. From the first days at WTTG, where I had a ringside seat as Mr. Murdoch transformed a small group of independent TV stations into a fourth network — to the 12 years spent at the Fox News Channel, where I participated in a grand journalistic experiment under the direction of the visionary Roger Ailes — it has been a blast

Then there is MSNBC’s David Shuster, who says he is not in “cable news bad boy prison.” He seems to be keeping himself busy with other projects.

Reporting the Return of the Crew of the Maersk Alabama

The crew of the Maersk Alabama returned to Andrews AFB around 1amET this morning. The Alabama’s Capt. Richard Phillips was unable to meet his crew before they left Kenya because of another pirate attack on a U.S. ship, so he remains aboard the USS Bainbridge.

The 1amET arrival was perfect timing for west coast stations’ late newscasts, but what about the national cable news channels?

How did they report it?

“It’s Not TV” — It’s The Strategy Room

The “studio” is an open room with a table and a couple cameras at the end of a long hallway on the Foxnews.com floor. The “control room” is essentially a person sitting at an audio board. Amid the wires and audio equipment is an XBOX, where guests from Shepard Smith to Geraldine Ferraro have hit the sticks for a round of Guitar Hero.

TVNewser visited The Strategy Room today, located on the 14th floor of the News Corp. building, home to Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. The Foxnews.com program streams nine hours a day non-stop, even staying “on air” while anchors and guests switch between hours.

“It’s rough by design. It’s not TV, it’s a different platform,” EP of Fox News Digital Mike Straka tells TVNewser.

Whatever it is, it’s working. According to VP of Fox News Digital Jeff Misenti, The Strategy Room averages more than 250,000 streams a day, while all of the Foxnews.com streams get more than one million a day.

“It creates buzz and energy and its really fun,” he says of having the program originate on the floor.

So what will viewers of The Strategy Room see when they tune in? Fox News anchors and correspondents host the program, usually for an hour each, and are joined by everyone from political pundits seen on the FNC air to comedians like Colin Quinn to, um, Michael Lohan. Today, Joe the Plummer was on during the 9amET hour.

Then there’s the moments that develop simply out of having more time and being on the Web. Like Rick Leventhal ragging on Phil Keating for his copious sweating after he finished a report. Or Julie Banderas bringing her puppy Sasha during anchoring duties. Or the Web hit video of Shep playing Guitar Hero (see it here). “You’re not going to see that anywhere else,” says Straka.

For Misenti, it’s part of a larger push on Foxnews.com. “We definitely see that people do want to engage with each other,” he says. As part of the site’s evolution, there can now be up to 12 separate streaming feeds, including The Strategy Room. The player can be the location for FNC/FBN prime time promotion within the flash player, and comments from viewers are added in real time.

So what does The Strategy Room have planned for tomorrow night? And will it still be there when the Election ends?

continued…
