Where To Watch The White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Saturday evening the White House Correspondents’ Dinner will be held in Washington DC. As has become de rigueur, the dinner and speeches will be televised on cable news. White House Correspondents’ Association chief and Fox News correspondent Ed Henry will speak, as will President Obama and this year’s comedic guest, Conan O’Brien.

C-SPAN, which was covering the dinner live before it was cool, will kick off coverage at 6:15 PM Saturday with red carpet coverage, as well as full, unedited coverage of the event. C-SPAN will also have some liveshots from BuzzFeed’s counter-programmed BBQ.

CNN is planning live coverage from 9-11 PM, hosted by Don Lemon, along with Brianna Keilar and Nischelle Turner. The first hour will feature “best of” moments from past dinners, with the second hour featuring the key speeches live. There will also be reports from the red carpet during the 6-7 PM hour.

Fox News will be covering the proceedings as part of “Justice with Judge Jeanine Pirro” from 9-11 PM Saturday. There will be some guests to talk about the festivities, and live coverage of the speeches in the 10 PM hour, TVNewser hears.

MSNBC will also have special coverage from 9-11 PM, with the first hour featuring “best of” highlights, and live coverage in the second hour. Craig Melvin will host.

CNN’s Election Night Plans

CNN’s coverage of the Presidential election kicks off on Tuesday night at 6pmET. Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper will anchor from Washington, with Candy Crowley in Boston and Erin Burnett in Ohio. This will be CNN’s first election night anchored from Washington, where the network recently unveiled new state-of-the-art facilities.

CNN is deploying more than two dozen reporters across the country. Jim Acosta will be at the Romney campaign headquarters in Boston, while Jessica Yellin, Dan Lothian and Brianna Keilar will be at the Obama headquarters in Chicago. As usual, John King will be manning the Magic Wall.

The network has more than 40 consecutive hours of live programming planned beginning at 5amET Tuesday. Much more in CNN’s release after the jump. continued…

CNN Spreading Out Correspondents Across Swing States

CNN has announced a slew of assignments for network correspondents in advance of the Presidential election. The network will have anchors and reporters in every swing state, as well as some floaters that will travel to multiple states, and the correspondents embedded with the campaigns. The network is launching segments branded as “The Final Battlegrounds” starting on Monday.

“CNN is deploying its vast resources and top-notch reporters into the states that the campaigns are targeting as the election nears,” said Mark Whitaker, executive VP and managing editor of CNN Worldwide in a statement. “Our in-depth reporting and analysis will keep voters informed of the up-to-the-minute developments that will determine the outcome of this extraordinarily close presidential race.”

TVNewsers Wear Pink at DC Breast Cancer Event

Television personalities donned pink last night for the fourth annual Newsbabes Bash for Breast Cancer, a yearly event that raises awareness and funds for breast cancer causes hosted by a group of Washington, DC-based female journalists.

The group includes breast cancer survivor Jennifer Griffin of Fox News, Megan Hughes of Bloomberg TV and Brianna Keilar of CNN, as well as several local news personalities. MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, who had breast cancer last year, was honored at last night’s event, held at the Howard Theatre.

This year’s event also featured the “Newsmen in Pink”: Peter Alexander and Luke Russert of NBC, Peter Hamby and Don Lothian of CNN, and Jim Angle, Bret Baier, Ed Henry, Peter Doocy and Juan Williams of Fox News.

Brianna Keilar Named White House Correspondent for CNN

CNN has named Brianna Keilar White House correspondent. Keilar, who is currently a Congressional correspondent for the network, will start her new assignment later this month.

“Brianna is an outstanding addition to the White House team,” said CNN Washington bureau chief David Bohrman in a statement. “She has distinguished herself with exceptional coverage of the 111^th Congress and her new beat will better position the network for the 2012 election season.”

Election 2010: Technology Front and Center for CNN’s Midterm Election Coverage

CNN has announced its coverage plans for the 2010 midterm elections. As in previous elections, new technology will be a major part of the coverage, with returning favorites like the “magic wall” and “data wall’ being joined by the “CNN Election Matrix,” which will break down data in a visual way.

The network already revealed it will be adding more “virtual objects” to its coverage.

“We are taking capabilities of the Data Wall and quadrupling it in order to report the story in the clearest way we can,” said CNN senior VP and Washington bureau chief David Bohrman in a statement. “Viewers are ready for a rich meal of election items and with CNN’s technology on air and online, paired with the Best Political Team, we will serve an unparalleled election night experience.”

Wolf Blitzer will lead the network’s coverage, and will be joined by Anderson Cooper, Candy Crowley, John King and Soledad O’Brien. Other anchors, reporters and hosts that will be contributing to the program include Jessica Yellin, Dana Bash, Brianna Keilar, Ed Henry, Dan Lothian, Suzanne Malveaux and new 8 PM hosts Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker.

Cable Channels Cover Rangel Comments

All three cable networks broke into their coverage just after 12:50 p.m. ET as Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) took to the House floor to address the charges of ethics violations against him.

All three aired Rangel’s comments live until about 1:16, when MSNBC went to Luke Russert and CNN went to Brianna Keilar in the Capitol Rotunda for analysis. Fox News had anchor Megyn Kelly provide her own analysis of Rangel’s speech.

We Blew up the Moon…And It Was Boring

Everyone was excited this morning about NASA firing that rocket into the moon. The cablers and network morning shows carried NASA’s live feed and the event had been teased for days. CBS’ “Early Show” host Harry Smith said, “It’s happening right now. In fact, we have video of this morning’s mission … we’re pumped up about this.”

But the footage was not quite as exciting as we’d perhaps expected. Instead of a Roland Emmerich-style explosion, the feed showed some shots of the moon followed by a black screen followed by the NASA people clapping.

FNC’s Brian Kilmeade asked: “What did we just see? Do you think we just saw the dust plume?” His “Fox & Friends” co-host Alisyn Camerota added, “We see everybody standing and clapping. It seems as though NASA considers this a success, what’s just happened.”

Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” added, “The visuals were better back [in 1969]… Did I miss something? I didn’t actually see anything. On “GMA,” Diane Sawyer described it as “The NASA equivalent of bars and tone.”

On NBC’s “Today” show, Matt Lauer was particularly disappointed: “I guess people were expecting some major plume of something visible to the human eye. I’m not seeing that.” He later interviewed Dr. Michio Kaku, author of “Physics of the Impossible”:

Lauer: We were told that with a fairly large telescope here on earth, you’d be able to see this. Yet, we’re looking at images coming from that trailing satellite, and I can’t see anything. This is a little surprising.

Dr. Kaku: Uhh.. yeah.

While it seemed disappointing for both tvnewsers and the audience at home, it must have been much worse for the people attending watch-parties. Brianna Keilar was live at the Newseum for CNN’s “American Morning” where people gathered to watch the event on a 40-foot high-def screen. Afterward she reported on the exuberant reaction:

The first [moment] where the initial image went blank, there was a — sort of a hushed “ah” and then light clapping.

FNC’s Claudia Cowan was at an event in California and interviewed a rather depressed looking middle-aged man dressed as Data from “Star Trek”:

Cowan: What time did you get here?

Brian/Data: I got here about 12 o’clock this morning.

Cowan: Did you see the impact just now on the big screen?

Brian/Data: They said it impacted, but I didn’t see anything.

On “The Early Show,” at least Russ Mitchell seemed to have enjoyed himself: “That is really cool stuff. Wasn’t that fun?”
