Cable News Regular General Wesley Clark to Host NBC Game Show, Todd Palin a Contestant

Former U.S. Army General, Democratic Presidential contender and TV news regular Wesley Clark is getting his own show on NBC… and it isn’t what you think.

Clark will be the co-host (along with “Entertainment Tonight”‘s Samantha Harris) of a game show on NBC called “Stars Earn Stripes,” which the network describes as “a fierce and emotionally charged new competition show honoring America’s armed forces.”

The series features celebrities pairing up with law enforcement and military officers, with the celebs later put to the test in challenges to see what they learned from their mentors. Among the contestants is Todd Palin, the husband of Fox News contributor and former GOP VP nominee Sarah Palin. Palin will have some tough competition, as he goes up against singer Nick Lachey, actor Terry Crews (The Expendables), Olympic skier Picabo Street, boxing champ Laila Ali, actor Dean Cain, along with someone from “The Biggest Loser” and a WWE “Diva.”

The show is from producer Mark Burnett, who also produced “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” for TLC. Todd and Sarah’s daughter Bristol Palin is launching her own reality show on Lifetime this Summer.

“Stars Earn Stripes” debuts Monday, August 13, the day after the London Summer games ends. In other words, prepare to see a lot of promos for this show during the Olympics.

Bristol Palin Talking to HLN’s Dr. Drew Pinsky

Update: The term “exclusive” may not apply, as Palin was on FNC’s “Hannity” three weeks ago. Original: Former Alaska first daughter Bristol Palin is out promoting her book, and she is giving an exclusive cable news interview to HLN’s Dr. Drew Pinsky to talk about it, according to the channel. Sarah Palin‘s daughter has been making the rounds, though her only national TV appearance in recent weeks was on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” Palin and Drew will discuss “what she considers her biggest regret, how she betrayed her family, her relationship with her mother, her new look, and if she thinks abstinence can really work.” The interview will air Thursday, July 21.

Kathy Griffin is Back with Anderson Cooper to Co-Host CNN New Year’s Eve

Despite reports to the contrary, Kathy Griffin will be back on CNN this New Year’s Eve co-hosting the network’s late night special with Anderson Cooper.

“The Most Trusted Name in News just got a whole lot more trusting” said Griffin. “I’m thrilled that they’re letting me co-host New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper again!”

Griffin has reportedly beefed up her security after being booed at the recent USO show “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops.” Griffin had joked about Bristol Palin‘s performance on “Dancing with the Stars,” saying she was “the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight.”

This will be the fourth year that Cooper and Griffin have co-hosted New Year’s Eve on CNN. They’ll take the stage at 11pmET but CNN’s NYE programming begins hours before and a will include a special edition of Larry King Live at 9pmET. King’s final Live broadcast is this Thursday.

“Oprah” Lauer? Today‘s “Go-To Guy”

Is NBC’s Matt Lauer “the male version of Oprah Winfrey“? The Buffalo News’ TV critic Alan Pergament makes the argument today based on three recent interviews: Elizabeth Edwards, Carrie Prejean and Bristol Palin.

The appearances of Edwards, Prejean and Palin with Lauer indicate that he is the go-to guy when women need gentle handling. Like Winfrey, he figures out how to ask newsmakers difficult or embarrassing questions without offending them in any way.

The three women are sympathetic figures to some degree, and that made it even harder to become too aggressive when asking questions….The empathetic Lauer was quite masterful making the subjects feel comfortable.

Will Ratigan’s Show Be “News” or “Opinion”?

ratigan_5-7.jpgNew host of MSNBC’s 9-11amET program Dylan Ratigan made his first appearance as an MSNBC host last night on Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

“Welcome to the family, we are delighted,” said Olbermann at the end of the segment.

But what can viewers expect from the new member of the family? On the other cablers, Heidi Collins of CNN and Bill Hemmer and Megyn Kelly of FNC anchor news-focused programs, and currently MSNBC does as well. But Ratigan told the New York Times “that viewers would ‘be aware of my opinions’ but they would not necessarily hew to a single ideology.”

During his Countdown appearance viewers got a taste of those opinions. The segment focused on Bristol Palin‘s appearances on the network morning shows yesterday. “What’s lost on me is why the Republicans, who own the platform for wasteful spending in America, instead hearken back three, four, five years ago for some polarizing social issue that they think they can create some sort of momentum around, when it is clear to the folks in Kansas who want to be with the Republicans, that the Republicans, beyond perhaps gay marriage or an advocacy against teen pregnancy, which last I checked is a 90-10 issue, they have yet to step up to the obvious, which is, our systems in America are failing,” he said.

Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston in a “He Said, She Said” Morning Show Face Off

Bristol_5.6.jpgBristol Palin appeared on Good Morning America this morning to talk about her new mission – preventing teen pregnancy and the importance of abstinence. But the talk turned to the father of her son, and her former fiance Levi Johnston.

Johnston then turned up on CBS’s The Early Show, because, well, it’s a great booking.

CBS even played a clip from ABC. And in an interesting
behind-the-scenes nugget, take a look at how the CBS transcript refers to anchor Chris Cuomo, who conducted the GMA interview.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What do you decide about how you let the father, Levi Johnston, be in this child’s life? What are you going to do about that?

BRISTOL PALIN, LEVI JOHNSTON’S FORMER FIANCEE: Well, I’d love Levi to be a part of his life, and I know he will be.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So, you’re good on that. No matter how you feel about the father, about Levi, you do want him in the child’s life.

PALIN: Yes. Of course.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Why?

PALIN: Every child needs a father.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Unidentified male? Nice, CBS. We’ll identify him for you: it’s Chris Cuomo. And we’re pulling out the snark-o-meter on this quote from an ABC insider: “Since CBS can’t identify its own morning anchors, I guess it’s the same for the other morning shows, too.”

CBSLevi_5.6.jpgAnyway, Johnston did agree with his former fiancee that abstinence “is a great idea,” but added, “it’s not going to work. It’s not realistic.” As for whether he and Bristol used birth control during their relationship, Johnston said, “I was using condoms, but, you know, there’s a few times, you know, we didn’t. And that’s what happened. We had a kid.”

Yup, Levi. That’s what happens. You have a kid.

The Ticker: Palin, Couric, Specter…

> Bristol Palin will talk live, in-studio to Chris Cuomo of ABC’s Good Morning America tomorrow morning. She and Cuomo will later both appear at a Candie’s Foundation town hall to discuss teen pregnancy prevention, where Palin is a foundation ambassador.

> CBS’ Katie Couric blogs from Saudi Arabia, where she has been using her Flip cam for upcoming YouTube video. Also: “I’m told I will have to wear my abaya if I don’t want to be harassed. I’m thinking about not wearing it and catching the encounter on my Flip, but maybe that’s not such a great idea!”

> Sen. Arlen Specter will be a guest on CNN’s Larry King Live tomorrow night (along with the previously announced Elisabeth Hasselbeck).

Every Network Picks Up Greta’s Bristol Palin Interview

How do you get every network morning show and your cable competition to play interview clips and break out the “Fox News” courtesies? Well, getting Gov. Sarah Palin‘s daughter, Bristol Palin, On the Record saying abstinence “is not realistic at all” helps. Greta Van Susteren‘s interview with Palin’s daughter aired last night, while the second part of her trip to Alaska airs tonight at 10pmET. A clip of the interview is after the jump:
