A Brief Timeline Of American TV Correspondent Kidnappings, Injuries and Deaths

NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel is safe, after being kidnapped in Syria late last week and released overnight. Unfortunately, kidnappings, injuries and death are part of the job of the foreign correspondent and their crew. With stories out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Egypt and Libya in the last few years, just about every news outlet has had at least a handful of staffers affected by violence or misfortune.

In April, 2003, NBC News correspondent David Bloom died in Iraq due to a blood clot.

In June, 2003, NBC News Soundman Jeremy Little was mortally wounded in a grenade attack in Iraq. He was treated in Landstuhl, Germany but succumbed a few days later to a post-operative infection.

In January, 2006, ABC anchor Bob Woodruff and camera operator Doug Vogt were badly injured in Iraq when a roadside bomb exploded next to the vehicle they were traveling in.

In May, 2006 CBS camera operator Paul Douglas and sound technician James Brolan were killed in Iraq when the U.S. Army unit they were embedded with came under attack. CBS correspondent Kimberly Dozier was seriously wounded in the attack and survived.

In August, 2006 Fox News Channel correspondent Steve Centanni and camera operator Olaf Wiig were kidnapped while reporting in Gaza. Centanni’s family would make a televised plea for their safe return, and they were eventually freed. Wiig would see another incident in Egypt in 2011 (see below).

In May, 2007 ABC News camera operator Alaa Uldeen Aziz and sound technician Saif Laith Yousuf were killed in Iraq when the car they were traveling in was ambushed.

In August, 2008 Fox News camera operator Chris Jackson was injured in Afghanistan while traveling with Oliver North.

In August, 2009 CBS News correspondent Cami McCormick was injured in Afghanistan when the vehicle she was traveling in was hit by an IED.

February 2011 saw a number of incidents, particularly in Egypt:

The Radio Television Digital News Association held their annual Edward R. Murrow Awards dinner last night in New York.
“In this day and age, where the news cycle is so fast,” Said McCormick, “It’s so hard to achieve excellence or strive for it these days. We keep trying. And to win it again is especially important this year.”

NBC News president Steve Capus accepted NBC’s Overall Excellence award for TV news. CNN’s Soledad O’Brien accepted one of five awards presented to news organizations for diversity coverage. And MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann won a Murrow for writing this story about the passing of his mother.

At last evening’s RTNDA Dinner, VP of CBS Radio Harvey Nagler was about to announce that correspondent Cami McCormick, who was seriously injured when an IED hit a vehicle she was traveling in with U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan last August, is nearly ready to return to work for CBS News.

In an emotional speech, Nagler called her “one of the most courageous and fearless individuals” he’d ever known and said, “I realize you’ve not heard very much about Cami since the first announcement of her injuries. Because that’s the way she wanted it.”

Prompting a standing ovation, Nagler added, “Right now I’m able to say something I was not sure I’d ever have the opportunity to say again: Cami, stand up and be recognized.”

Kimberly Dozier Running 10K in Honor of Cami McCormick

CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier, seriously injured in Iraq in 2006, is once again running the Team Fisher House 10K as part of the Marine Corps Marathon later this month. And this year, she’s doing it in honor of CBS Radio News correspondent Cami McCormick (pictured), herself injured in Afghanistan in August.

Fisher House is a place for families of injured troops to stay while their loved ones recover. Dozier’s family stayed there when she was injured. McCormick’s family is there now. 97.5 cents of every dollar donated to Fisher House goes directly toward program expenses. It’s regarded as one of the most efficiently run charities.
