It’s Official: Kelly Evans Named ‘Squawk On The Street’ Co-Anchor

As TVNewser first heard back in April, CNBC has named Kelly Evans as a new co-anchor on “Squawk on the Street,” the business channel’s 9 AM-12 PM program. Evans will effectively be replacing Melissa Lee, who cut back her hours on the morning program last month. She will be joining the current “Squawk” team, which includes Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer, David Faber and Simon Hobbs.

Evans is moving to CNBC’s headquarters in New Jersey from London, where she has been the co-host of ‘Worldwide Exchange,” which airs from 4-6 AM on the east coast. She joined CNBC in February, 2012 from the Wall Street Journal, adding co-anchor duties to “Worldwide Exchange” in May of that year.

Anchor Change at CNBC

First on TVNewser: Melissa Lee (left) is cutting back her anchoring duties at CNBC. Lee is moving off the 9amET show “Squawk on the Street” which he has co-anchored since Erin Burnett‘s departure almost two years ago.

“Melissa is an integral part of the network and wanted to focus on ‘Fast Money’ the 5PM show she has hosted since 2009 as well as work on other projects including her upcoming documentary on the industrial Internet,” a CNBC spokesperson tells TVNewser.

TVNewser hears Kelly Evans who joined CNBC from the Wall Street Journal last year and who currently anchors “Worldwide Exchange” from London, will be returning to CNBC HQ in the coming weeks and could land at “Squawk” alongside Carl Quintanilla, David Faber, Simon Hobbs and Jim Cramer. But no definitive plans are in place, insiders say.

NBC News Group Makes Ad Sales Pitch At Upfront

The NBC News Group, including NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC, held an upfront presentation today at the New York Public library in midtown Manhattan. The Celeste Bartos Forum in the Library was lit up in shades of purple and blue, as media buyers and advertisers mingled with NBC News executives and talent.

Newly-minted MSNBC 8 PM host Chris Hayes was there, as was Matt Lauer, the co-anchor of “Today” who has been at the center of a number of news stories of late. He seemed to take the stories in stride, joking with Savannah Guthrie onstage:

“I would like to tackle what might be a teeny white elephant in the room,” Lauer said to laughter from the crowd. “We all love covering the news, we hate being the news, and so I would like to say on that subject–from the bottom of my heart–that I promise to spend all of my time and energy over the next several months trying to keep Savannah out of the headlines. ”

We want to go back to the most-watched morning program and the least talked about morning program,” he added.

Lauer sat next to NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke during the lunch, and “Today” was the final NBC News property pitched during the presentation, emphasizing how important the show is to the network.

Comcast To Acquire Full Control Of NBCUniversal

Comcast will acquire control of 100% of NBCUniversal, buying General Electric’s 49% stake in the company for $16.7 billion. Comcast will also acquire the property that GE has at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and at CNBC’s headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey for an additional $1.4 billion.

By acquiring the property, it is likely that the GE logo that has adorned the top of 30 Rockefeller Plaza since 1988 will be replaced. Before being called the GE Building, it was known as the RCA building. According to CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla, Comcast will be getting the naming rights to the building in the deal.

“The management team at GE has been has been a wonderful partner during the past two years and their support has been very valuable,” said Comcast CEO Brian Roberts in a statement. “Our decision to acquire GE’s ownership is driven by our sense of optimism for the future prospects of NBCUniversal and our desire to capture future value that we hope to create for our shareholders.”

Comcast was expected to acquire full control of NBCU eventually, though the process was originally slated to begin in 2014. Now it appears the deal will be done in March.

State of the Union Coverage: Biz Networks

All three business networks will provide live coverage of tonight’s State of the Union speech and Republican response.

On Fox Business, Neil Cavuto will anchor beginning at 9pmET. Cavuto will be joined by Peter Barnes and Rich Edson from Washington, DC. John Stossel will host a special edition of “Stossel,” featuring a live studio audience, at 11pmET.

CNBC will have two hours of live coverage beginning at 9pmET. Carl Quintanilla will anchor, with chief Washington correspondent John Harwood reporting from DC.

Bloomberg TV’s coverage also kicks of at 9pmET. Trish Regan will anchor, joined by chief Washington correspondent Peter Cook and White House correspondent Hans Nichols.

Business Networks Celebrate Dow 14,000

The cable business networks are partying like its 2007!

At 10:08AM, the Dow Jones Industrial Average passed 14,000, heights not seen since Oct., 2007. “You have no idea how long we’ve been waiting to use that graphic once again,” said Carl Quintanilla on CNBC. The Dow’s record high is 14,164.53, a record that is tantalizingly in reach.

Not surprisingly, once the milestone was reached, CNBC, Fox Business Network and Bloomberg marked the occasion.

Where to Watch the Final Presidential Debate

Tonight is the third and final Presidential debate of this election cycle. CBS’ Bob Schieffer moderates at Lynn University in Boca Raton. Here’s a round up of what the cable and broadcast networks have planned…

Scott Pelley anchors on CBS from 9-11pmET. With Schieffer moderating, certain CBS programs — including yesterday’s “Face the Nation” and today’s “CBS This Morning” — originate from Florida. Pelley will be joined by Major Garrett of National Journal and Julianna Goldman of Bloomberg, among others.

ABC’s coverage kicks off at 9pmET with Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos anchoring. They will be joined during the two-hour broadcast by VP debate moderator Martha Raddatz, Christiane Amanpour, Jake Tapper, David Muir and Jonathan Karl.

Where to Watch the Second Presidential Debate

Tonight’s Presidential debate, moderated by CNN’s Candy Crowley, will be held at Hofstra University at 9pmET. Here’s a round-up of what the broadcast and cable networks have planned.

On ABC News, Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos will anchor coverage from 9pm-11pmET. They will be joined by Jake Tapper, David Muir and Jon Karl. “Nightline” will be live at 11:35pmET, and ABC News will stream the debate online.

CBS News will also be live from 9pm-11pmET with Scott Pelley at the anchor desk. The network’s post-debate coverage will feature a poll of approximately 500 uncommitted voters around the nation.

Brian Williams will anchor from 9pm-11pmET on NBC News in New York City. He will be joined by David Gregory, Savannah Guthrie, Chuck Todd and Tom Brokaw. Andrea Mitchell will lead the network’s “Truth Squad” fact-check team.

CNBC’s Vice Presidential debate coverage kicks off tonight at 7pmET with Larry Kudlow‘s “The Kudlow Report.” Becky Quick and Carl Quintanilla take over from 8pm to 11pmET with live pre- and post-debate analysis.

Quick and Quintanilla will anchor will be joined by Jim Cramer in the studio and CNBC Washington correspondent John Harwood, who will be live from the debate site in Kentucky.

Remembering Mark Haines, One Year Later

Throughout CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” this morning, Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer, David Faber and Melissa Lee shared memories of Mark Haines, the longtime CNBC anchor, who died one year ago today.

“His picture is on a plaque here at the big board,” said Quintanilla. “He was always in your corner. The investor’s corner.”

“I miss him every day,” added Faber. “I think it’s a tribute to him a year after his death, that a day doesn’t pass that I don’t get a tweet or an e-mail saying either, ‘Mark would have loved that question’ or, ‘Mark would be proud.’ People have not forgotten him for a very good reason.”

Business Nets Plan Special Coverage of Facebook IPO

The business networks are gearing up for tomorrow’s Facebook IPO, which begins trading on the NASDAQ when the markets open tomorrow morning.

Bloomberg TV is kicking off coverage at 5pmET today with “Facebook: The Public Network,” a live three-hour special anchored by Emily Chang and Cory Johnson in San Francisco, Betty Liu in New York and Jon Erlichman at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, CA. At 8pmET, Matt Miller will anchor a live one-hour special, followed by an updated version of Bloomberg’s “Game Changers” on Mark Zuckerberg at 9pmET.

CNBC devoted the 1pmET hour this afternoon to the IPO with a special anchored by Carl Quintanilla. He and Julia Boorstin will also report from Facebook’s headquarters tomorrow. Tomorrow morning, CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” will broadcast from the NASDAQ, where Facebook will be trading, instead of their usual perch at the NYSE.

On Fox Business Network, Stuart Varney will host a special “Varney & Co.” tomorrow morning to cover the market open and the IPO launch. Shibani Joshi will be live from Facebook’s headquarters and Lauren Simonetti will be at the NASDAQ.

‘Good Morning America’ Poised to Win Another Week

With the Nielsen Fast National numbers for Friday just released, “Good Morning America” is in a position to win another week in the morning show ratings race. For the week of April 23, “GMA” has a +165,000 (preliminary) Total Viewer lead over the “Today” show. The win comes just as the May ratings period begins and as the regular anchor teams were in place, except for Friday, when Matt Lauer was off. But in an interesting twist, “Today” won the day Friday drawing +120,000 more viewers than “GMA” with Carl Quintanilla sitting in for Lauer.

When “GMA” beat “Today” the week of April 9, the first time in more than 16 years, Lauer was off all week.

In the A25-54 demo, “Today” is poised to continue its streak to 887 weeks at #1, although “GMA” continues to close the gap, with just 94,000 viewers (preliminary) separating the two shows. That’s the smallest gap since the week of Nov. 27, 1995.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of last week, “GMA” had significant leads on “Today” of 404,000, 288,000 and 283,000 viewers, respectively.

Final ratings will come Thursday.

‘Good Morning America’ Leading ‘Today’ for the Week

With Thursday’s fast-national Nielsen numbers now in, “Good Morning America” is in a position to win the week. This comes as “Today” regained the top spot last week. As of Thursday’s show, “GMA” has a 236,000 total viewer lead for the week. “Today” is still leading with younger viewers. If “GMA” takes the week it will be a “clean” win as both show’s primary anchors were in. When “GMA” won the week of April 9, Matt Lauer was on vacation.

There is one exception: today. Viewers may have been asking ‘where in the world is Matt Lauer‘ this morning? Well, he had the day off, and Carl Quintanilla was sitting in. The May sweeps period began Thursday and, while it’s happened before, it’s unusual for anchors — and just about anyone who works at a local news station — to take off during Sweeps. Meanwhile, at GMA, Robin Roberts Tweeted that she flew to Los Angeles on assignment after yesterday’s show and took the red-eye back to be on this morning.

‘Girl’ Talk with Allison Williams on ‘Today’

Describing her as the “It Girl,” NBC’s “Today” show had on the daughter of “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams this morning. Allison Williams is one of the stars of “Girls” which debuts on HBO Sunday night.

In a chat with Ann Curry and Carl Quintanilla, Williams describes the show as “an accurate depiction what it’s like to be in your early 20′s in New York.”

As for the “adult themes” of the HBO show, Williams says mom and dad are cool with it. “They lived through the filming of it with me and every time I’d read a new script I’d come home so excited. And I think they’re very proud.”
