Is ‘Morning Meeting’ Heading to the Afternoon?

TVNewser hears some changes may be in store for MSNBC dayside.

“Morning Meeting,” the two hour show hosted by Dylan Ratigan, may be split, with one hour in the morning and another in the afternoon. It’s not determined which hour Ratigan might take over, but one scenario puts him at 4pmET, leading in to “Hardball.” He could also land at 3pmET, which is one of the hours he anchored at CNBC until earlier this year.

“Meeting” launched in June with Ratigan at the helm. If the show is halved in the morning, the 10amET slot would return to news, which is what happened to the 11amET slot in August with the cancellation of Carlos Watson‘s show.

MSNBC Cancels Carlos Watson at 11am

Anchor Carlos Watson has been removed from the 11amET hour of MSNBC’s dayside programming effective immediately. Mediaite’s Rachel Sklar confirmed the news today and reported that Watson will stay on as a contributor. At present, it is unclear who will replace him, but TVNewser will be keeping a close eye on that situation.

Watson became a dayside anchor for MSNBC in March, and was named host of the 11amET slot just a short time ago in mid-June. The chief competition at 11amET was FNC’s “Happening Now” and “CNN Newsroom.”

While somewhat quiet, Watson’s tenure was not without some contention. In May, TVNewser reported that MSNBC producers had been asked to avoid mentioning Watson’s “The Stimulist” site during daytime hours, though some features from the site such as the “C-Note” became a part of “MSNBC Live” once Watson began anchoring. “The Stimulist” is currently on hiatus.

> UPDATE: TVNewser has confirmed with MSNBC that a new anchor rotation will begin for Watson’s slot starting this week with with Tamron Hall and Monica Novotny anchoring on Tuesday and Hall and Alex Witt anchoring Wednesday-Friday.

> WebNewser investigates some very curious tweets from an impostor Fox News twitter account, which include such intellectual aphorisms as, “We want to make out with Barack Obama.
Carlos Watson Responds to Criticism with Stimulist Post

On Monday’s “MSNBC Live with Carlos Watson,” the MSNBC host made a comment asking if the term “socialist” is becoming code for the “n-word.”

Since that time, Watson has apparently received streams of emails and tweets and has taken notice of criticism spreading across the web. Today, on his The Stimulist site, Watson tried to answer everyone from Youtube commenters to Lou Dobbs, reiterating, “I wondered–let me repeat that: wondered–whether “socialist” was being used as a code word for the N-word, an outlet for racist anxiety and anger.” He then wrote:

Over the last 24 hours, I’ve been accused both of trying to silence dissent and race bait. I am interested in neither. Various e-mailers have said they don’t think anyone has literally meant the N-word. Maybe they’re right. But maybe not; just take a look at the hundreds of comments on YouTube. Either way, responsible people need to not kid themselves: there is clearly some meaningful racial animus behind some of the opposition to President Obama. (Again, I said some — not all or a majority.) Pretending otherwise is hypocritical, negligent, and dangerous.

“I Don’t Want to Come on Television and be Lectured by You About What I Should and Shouldn’t be Doing”

Dan Abrams, who remains an MSNBC analyst, meaning he still gets a paycheck from the Peacock, has launched another new Web site. And he went on MSNBC to promote it. Nice.

“Gossipcop is the place to go when you want to correct the record and get the story right,” said Abrams.

But the former MSNBC host was thrown a curveball during the segment when Katrina vanden Heuvel, who was acting as a sort of co-host for the Carlos Watson hour, smacked down the whole concept.

“With all due respect to Dan and Mike, I think we need a lot more policing of things we have heard on the show just before this segment. We need policing of covert ops, policing of lobbyists –”

That’s when Abrams cut her off and explained how his other site, Mediaite, does just that by policing the media. Then Abrams huffed, “I don’t want to come on television and be lectured by you about what I should and shouldn’t be doing.”

Not sure if Mediaite has written about their bosses’ appearance today on MSNBC. But Gawker did…and they have video.

The Boss is on Carlos Watson’s Show

Over here at mediabistro we have a managers meeting every Wednesday at 10:15am, but the boss, Laurel Touby, won’t be presiding today because she’s appearing on MSNBC in the 11amET hour. Carlos Watson‘s show has booked her to talk about entrepreneurship. Two years ago this month she sold mediabistro.com for a cool many, many millions. So, unless breaking news bumps her, look for Laurel later this morning on MSNBC.

“One thing I neglected to do on Friday night is thank MSNBC. We rock,” said Viqueira.

The award is given in memory of the late Joan Barone, former executive producer of CBS News’ Face the Nation, and is presented for excellence in Washington, D.C.-based national affairs and public policy reporting.

Another Hour Filled: Carlos Watson Gets 11am Slot on MSNBC

First on TVNewser: Carlos Watson, who officially joined MSNBC as a dayside anchor in March, will be the host of the 11amET hour. His first day was today.

The move continues to fill in the gaps on MSNBC dayside ahead of the June 29 move to HD and addition of programs at 9amET and NoonET.

Initially, it was reported David Gregory would anchor one day a week at 11amET. Norah O’Donnell was also slated for a morning hour. She told TVNewser in April: “I look forward to my new hour in the mornings!”

Now it appears the morning line-up is set, with Dylan Ratigan anchoring 9-11am and Dr. Nancy Snyderman at Noon.

Watson was recently asked not to promote his personal Website, The Stimulist, and although he didn’t mention the site by name, he did bring over one of the features. “Now we’re going to move on to my daily big thought,” said Watson, delivering his take in a segment called “The C-Note.” That name is used for his personal column on The Stimulist, and today’s topic was taken directly from his June 5th post.

Click continued to see the C-Note segment today…

MSNBC Asks Producers Not To Promote Anchor’s Website

Last week we told you about MSNBC anchor Carlos Watson launching a Website called “The Stimulist.” It’s a site that bills itself as “The Optimist’s Daily Brief” and includes Watson’s “original take on the daily news.”

But insiders tell TVNewser, Watson may be trying to promote the site while he’s anchoring, which got us wondering how MSNBC allows him to do both.

Watson was hired as an anchor in late March. “The Stimulist” launched in early March. We hear that NBC News standards would not normally allow an anchor to launch a personal Website, especially one that so closely incorporates its talent. But Watson was “grandfathered” in because he was developing the site before MSNBC hired him.

MSNBC is still allowing Watson to mention the site when he appears as a guest on other shows, including during an appearance on Morning Joe today. But producers have been asked not to mention “The Stimulist” during daytime hours. Which is probably just fine with folks at msnbc.com.

MSNBC’s Carlos Watson Launches New Website

WebNewser talked to MSNBC’s Carlos Watson, who launched a new Website, The Stimulist, today.

Watson describes the target audience of the site, while also mentioning an MSNBC competitor:

Watson says The Stimulist is geared towards “a younger crowd” of professionals between the ages of 25-49. He calls his target audience “the change generation or the Obama generation.”

“I don’t see anyone else who’s focused in the same way,” on this group, he says. “If you’re conservative you feel like someone listened to all your hopes and dreams and gave you Fox News, if you’re a baby boomer and you’re liberal it’s like there’s someone who gave you NPR… but there’s nothing that’s perfectly crafted for this generation.”

“Rude? I Wasn’t Being Rude”

A TVNewser reader asked us this morning, “Do you think this Santelli thing has legs?” “Yes” was our answer.

About a half hour after the White House press secretary said, “I feel assured that Mr. Santelli doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” the Chicago on-air editor for CNBC appeared on MSNBC.

Santelli’s response to the traction his outburst has gotten: “I think it’s terrific. It’s opened a national debate.”

About Gibbs’ invite, Santelli told anchors Contessa Brewer and Carlos Watson, “I think it’s wonderful he invited me to the White House. But I’m not big on decaf. I prefer tea.”

Santelli, Brewer and Watson then got into a debate about the debate. Which ended with Brewer having to tell viewers, “Rude? I wasn’t being rude.”

The clip after the jump…

> Update: TVNewser hears Santelli will make the Worst Persons list tonight on MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann…

One More Time: Vote For MSNBC’s 10pm Host

We’ve written about the potential for a new 10pmET host on MSNBC a few times since MSNBC president Phil Griffin floated the idea last month.

The LA Times and Huffington Post have written about how progressive radio hosts Sam Seder and Cenk Uygur (of The Young Turks) created Facebook fan pages (here and here) with the hopes of getting them the gig, assuming there is really a gig to be had.

Their fans have inundated our inbox too.

So, it’s time for another vote.

We took the top 5 vote getters from last month’s poll, added new names: Willie Geist, Ted Koppel, Carlos Watson, Bill Maher (why?), Dan Rather (why?) and Uygur, and we leave the option open that no one gets the hour:

Who Should Be MSNBC’s 10pm Host?
( surveys)

After Making TV Rounds, Carlos Watson Settles in at MSNBC, For Now

The NYDaily News talks with Carlos Watson, who has been anchoring on MSNBC lately.

For the past few years, Watson has appeared as an analyst/pundit/host on Fox News, CNN and CNBC. And, at 39, TV is his third career. “I first spent time in politics, managing campaigns. Then, after a brief stint in grad school, I went into the business world. First, for a big company. Then I started my own company,” he tells the Daily News.

As for his anchor-prep, no source is off limits. “[F]or this new generation, I like to call it the Obama generation, I think that everything is fair game, from The New York Times to Perez Hilton. You can’t really serve the Obama generation if you’re Johnny One-Note, you’ve got to be able to flow from ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ to ‘Countdown With Keith Olbermann’ to ‘Entourage.’”

Watson has been anchoring alongside Contessa Brewer during dayside hours. “There’s a whole wave of young anchors now,” Watson says. “A friend of mine joked, calling it the A.R.C. of anchors. There’s Anderson [Cooper], there’s Rachel [Maddow] and there’s Carlos. I don’t know if I’ve earned that yet, but I think it’s impressive what those two have accomplished.”
