Charlie Gibson’s Oil Special Outperforms NBC News’ ‘The Wanted’

Last week, the co-EP of the new NBC News production “The Wanted” took a jab at ABC’s Charlie Gibson. 26-year-old Charlie Ebersol was making the point that his show was going after younger viewers, telling the LATimes: “I will face criticism for what my show looks like, but my belief is kids my age want to see production value. You tell me if they’re going to watch Charlie Gibson at 10 o’clock on Monday or my show?.”

Well, 2.99 Total Viewers watched “The Wanted” Monday night and it put up an anemic 0.8 rating in A18-49 viewers.

Friday night’s ABC News special “Over a Barrel: The Truth About Oil” reported by Gibson beat “The Wanted in both Total Viewers and the A18-49 demo.

“Over a Barrel” had 4.02M Total Viewers and a 1.0 A18-49 rating. The show added 1.6M Total Viewers from its lead-in “According to Jim.” and built its audience from the first to second half hour, from 3.8M to 4.3M. The news program was third in its Friday 10pmET timeslot behind CBS’s “NUMB3RS” and NBC’s “Dateline”.

“The Wanted” Sees Results Even Before Premiere

The series premiere of the NBC News program “The Wanted” needed some late editing this afternoon. It turns out there is movement on a case profiled in tonight’s show. During an interview on MSNBC’s Hardball, co-EP Charlie Ebersol told Chris Matthews the man at the focus of the episode may be extradited back to Iraq.

“We just found out in the last hour and a half, the minister of foreign affairs has announced that after 18 years of being in Norway and evading justice, the Norwegians are now working directly with the Iraqis. And they’ve vowed to deport [Mullah Krekar] back to Iraq, where he can face justice for crimes including killing hundreds, if not thousands of Americans and Europeans and targeting American civilians.”

“The Wanted” brings together an elite team with backgrounds in intelligence, unconventional warfare and investigative journalism to bring war criminals to justice. The show premieres at 10pmET/PT on NBC.

“You Tell Me if They’re Going to Watch Charlie Gibson at 10 O’clock on Monday or My Show?

Ebersol_7.20.jpgCharlie Ebersol, one of the co-executive producers of the new NBC News show “The Wanted,” says the show is aimed squarely at a younger audience. The 26-year-old son of NBC Sports & Olympics chairman Dick Ebersol tells the LA TimesMatea Gold, “I will face criticism for what my show looks like, but my belief is kids my age want to see production value.

You tell me if they’re going to watch Charlie Gibson at 10 o’clock on Monday or my show?,” asked Ebersol (left, in photo, with Adam Ciralsky another co-EP). By the way, “The Wanted’s” premiere at 10pm tonight is up against a new ABC reality show “Dating in the Dark,” not featuring Charlie Gibson, and pretty much that same “kids my age” audience.

Dateline EP David Corvo says “The Wanted’s” style “is “certainly out of the comfort zone of a traditional news program.” (Think: the Jason Bourne series of movies) “But to me it was an interesting way to grab people’s attention.”

“I wouldn’t do ‘Dateline’ that way. It’s just not our training and not our style. But I think it has value,” Corvo tells Gold.
