NBC News special correspondent Chelsea Clinton was among the tvnewsers leading panels at today’s Women in the World conference. But it was her mother who got a thunderous applause and shouts of “2016!” when she took the stage at the fourth annual event. Hillary Clinton called women’s rights “a core imperative for every society.”

Clinton’s speech kicked off the day’s events, which featured an impressive roster of women from the television news industry: ABC’s Cynthia McFadden, Deborah Roberts and JuJu Chang and CBS’s Norah O’Donnell all moderated panel discussions on topics ranging from women in the tech industry to fostering female leaders.

Before moderating a spirited panel discussion about the epidemic of sexual abuse in India, McFadden (pictured above) talked with an Indian woman who was the victim of a rape. She sat with her back to the audience in order to conceal her identity. The woman, whose case is still pending in the Indian high court, described how she was raped by a male friend of hers four

The Bush Who is in Washington for the Inauguration

The two Presidents Bush will not be attending today’s second Inauguration of Pres. Obama. But former first daughter and granddaughter Jenna Bush Hager is there. The NBC News contributor was on set with Brian Williams, Savannah Guthrie and David Gregory to talk about being a member of the First Family. “We may have had a little — a couple mix-ups,” said Jenna who, with her twin Barbara, was in college when their father was in the White House. “We weren’t going to bring it up,” said Guthrie, laughing. “I think one of the things that my parents did and the Obamas seems to be doing, is just letting them grow up, letting us grow up, as normal as you can be.”

No word on whether the other presidential daughter/NBC News contributor Chelsea Clinton will take part in NBC’s coverage.

Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik takes aim at Chelsea Clinton in his latest Daily Download column, calling her a “pretend correspondent” at NBC News:

I continue to be fascinated by a network news division putting someone as outrageously unqualified as Clinton on a prime-time newsmagazine. I watched her again last week in a softer-than-soft piece on a weight loss program started by Pastor Rick Warren at his Saddleback Church, and I can say with absolute certainty that she has not improved one lick in the last year. In fact, I think she is worse than when she started this job for which NBC News President Steve Capus said “it’s as if she had been preparing her whole life.”

‘Rock Center’ To Talk To Richard Engel, As ‘Meet The Press Talks To The NRA

NBC News has announced a pair of notable interviews, with “Rock Center” to feature a discussion with Richard Engel and his crew, and “Meet the Press” securing the first interview with NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre since the awful shooting in Newtown, CT last week.

On “Rock Center” tonight Brian Williams will sit down with Engel, as well as producers Ghazi Balkiz and Aziz Akyavas, and cameraman John Kooistra “to hear their story first-hand.” Other stories include an Ann Curry piece on Sandy Hook and the latest from Chelsea Clinton.

On “Meet the Press” Sunday, David Gregory will sit with LaPierre in his first interview since the Newtown shooting. The NRA is slated to hold a press conference today, so whatever they announce there will surely come up in the interview.

Buzzfeed: NBC Scuttled Chelsea Clinton’s Marriage Ad

NBC News “special correspondent” Chelsea Clinton is a politically active person in a very politically active family. She also works for a news organizations that prides itself on fairness. Buzzfeed reports that NBC scuttled plans for Clinton to appear in an ad supporting gay marriage that would have aired in Washington State and online leading up to the election. Even though Clinton does not report on political issues for NBC, the ads were apparently a bit too much.

Three people who saw the videos confirmed their existence to BuzzFeed. They were fully prepared, with the script approved in advance, one source said. The video wasn’t intended for TV broadcast, a second source said, suggesting they were instead to be used as web-based videos. The source added that multiple efforts had been intended beneficiaries of the former First Daughter’s support.

The man that NBC’s Brian Williams calls his role model, local Elmira anchor Carl Proper, has died. In an interview with WETM last night, Williams remembered Proper as the “local go-to guy in so many ways.” TVSpy has more details.

Chelsea Clinton has been absent from the campaign trail this election season because of her role on “Rock Center.” The New York Post reports “her contract with NBC News ‘prevents her from participating in the campaign.’”

Fox Business Network anchor Lou Dobbs talks politics with Investor’s Business Daily. “I’ve never seen a turn in the polls like this, and I believe it’s profound,” he said.

MSNBC Dedicates Segment To Magazine Article About NBC News Contributor Chelsea Clinton

How meta is this? MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” dedicated a segment to a Vogue magazine interview with Chelsea Clinton, a contributor to NBC News. Mitchell notes that Clinton is very private, an that the Vogue article is a big example of her “stepping out” into the limelight. She makes sure to note her conenction to NBC news of course.

Ben Mulroney Joins ‘Good Morning America’

NBC News employs the daughters of two former presidents: Jenna Bush Hager and Chelsea Clinton. ABC has on staff, Chris Cuomo, the son of a former New York governor and the brother of the current one. MSNBC counts Meghan McCain, daughter of Sen. John McCain as a contributor and CNN has turned to the great-granddaughter of Pres. Herbert Hoover, Margaret Hoover, for commentary. A Shriver, a Brzezinski, we’re sure there are more.

Now, ABC has gone north of the U.S. border to find the latest political progeny who’s turned to television.

ABC News president Ben Sherwood announced the hiring of Ben Mulroney as a contributor to “Good Morning America.” Mulroney, the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, will continue to host CTV’s “etalk,” an entertainment news program in Canada.

“He is a terrific broadcaster, quick on his feet, and excels at live television,” writes Sherwood in a note to the staff. “Ben is a versatile journalist, equally comfortable on the red carpet, covering the Vancouver Winter Games or interviewing Canadian Prime Ministers.”

Mulroney makes his “GMA” bow this weekend.

NBC News catches a lot of flack for hiring the children of prominent politicians (i.e. Meghan McCain, Chelsea Clinton), but there is a method to the madness. Today is former President George H.W. Bush‘s 88th birthday, and NBC’s “Today” had the first interview… conducted by his granddaughter, “Today” contributing correspondent Jenna Bush Hager.

Five months into her employment with NBC News, BuzzFeed looks at what Chelsea Clinton has brought to the network, and what she hasn’t. “So far, she’s only done three Making A Difference segments in five months,” writes Michael Hastings.

Almost everyone I spoke to for this story — from within NBC and at other networks as well — agree that that problem is that she won’t talk about the one thing that makes her undeniably compelling. How did it feel to be Chelsea Clinton during the Monica years? In the past, she’s responded angrily to that question. “It’s none of your business,” she told an audience after being questioned about it on the 2008 campaign trail.

That line doesn’t play anymore, now that she’s entered the family business of living in public. “What’s she giving us?” one NBC executive, who sees Chelsea regularly, asks. “There’s that wall that needs to be torn down. She sounds like a smart and intelligent woman, but there are lots of smart and intelligent women.”

Fox News SVP: Heather Childers’ Tweets on Obama Were ‘A Mistake’

Heather Childers is the latest cable newser to find herself at the center of a social media firestorm.

The Fox News anchor tweeted links to several articles from Godfather Politics earlier this week that caused a stir, including one which questioned whether the Obama campaign had threatened Chelsea Clinton‘s life and one that said Obama “Channels Joseph Stalin, Attacks Supreme Court Justices.”

“The tweets have been addressed with Heather and she understands this was a mistake,” Fox News SVP Michael Clemente told Mediaite Tuesday.

After a flood of responses, Childers was quick to offer an apology. “Here’s the thing folks … that ONE topic sure got a lot of you tweeting,” she wrote. “Why? I apologize if the article offended anyone. Very interesting.” She has since protected her tweets.

NBC News Makes Pitch to Advertisers, As ‘Rock Center’ Hits New Viewership Low

NBC Newsers always like to say they are part of one big family. But in a family that big, with several making millions of dollars a year — even a select few in the double-digit millions — there is bound to be sibling rivalry. And so it was on display Thursday as NBC News held an upfront presentation at the event space 583 Park Avenue. Matt Lauer tweaked Brian Williams for his run-on questions; Williams took a shot at Willie Geist: “I just found out he had a show;” who had fired first: “Brian is the caregiver for our parents and grandparents at 6:30 every night.”

Kidding aside, the event was all business: a gathering of sales teams, planners and agencies in an effort to get advertisers excited by what NBC News — the #1 news network — and MSNBC have to offer. At one point, Williams mentioned “the elephant in the room.” While some may have thought he was talking about his primetime newsmagazine’s ratings — “Rock Center” hit a new viewership low drawing just 2.6 million viewers Wednesday — the newsman-comedian was actually taking a jab Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford.

“Hods and Kathie Lee are just baked. Permanently hammered,” said Williams of the fourth hour “Today” team. He referred to Ed Schultz as “a big bowl of humanity. His head alone is bigger than my first apartment in New York.” And after Al Roker revealed he and Williams “spooned” in a tent

Chelsea Clinton Expected to Re-Up with NBC News

It looks like NBC and Chelsea Clinton will extend their deal. The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple and New York Times‘ Amy Chozik both reporting the news with Chozik writing Clinton “will extend her three-month contract” with Wemple adding his sources “wouldn’t comment on how long the new agreement will extend the rookie correspondent.”

Clinton joined NBC News late last year as a contributor to “Nightly News” and “Rock Center.”

An extended deal will take her closer, if not beyond, the presidential election. As she would need to adhere to NBC News standards, this means the former first daughter won’t be able to fund-raise or formally campaign for the Obama re-election team.

Chelsea Clinton’s TV News Debut

Even though she’s been in the public eye for almost 20 years, tonight, at approximately 6:55pmET, most Americans had the chance to hear Chelsea Clinton for the first time. The daughter of a former President of the United States and a sitting Secretary of State, famous for not being famous, Clinton began her stint tonight as a special correspondent for NBC News. On the “Nightly News” set with Brian Williams, Clinton wrapped a cut-down version of a longer “Making a Difference” report that will air tonight on “Rock Center.” If you’d tuned in as the story was airing you might think a seasoned journalist was delivering the report — her questions were direct, the writing was succinct, her voice has a built-in broadcast quality (or she’s taken a crash course in Broadcast Diction 101) but the cutaways of Clinton made a difference in this report. This was not some reporter brought up from the NBC farm team in Miami or Chicago.

Clinton’s hire as a special correspondent has faced criticism from those whose life’s work is media criticism. NBC News president Steve Capus signed Clinton to a three-month contract to see how this all plays out.

“It helps to tell their stories which I know is why you’re here, and we have months yet to talk about all kinds of things,” said Williams. “We’re so happy to have you here.”
