Versus to Launch New Weekly NFL Series

NFL Films and NBC Sports Group will be producing a new behind-the-scenes weekly show that looks at two NFL games. NFL Turning Point will premiere Thursday, Sept. 15 at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will air on Versus. This is the first NFL program to ever air on Versus, which will be re-named the NBC Sports Network Jan. 2.

“Showcasing the sounds and images of the game, from the smallest detail to the big picture has been our strength for nearly 50 years,” said NFL Films President Steve Sabol. “We are thrilled to get an opportunity to produce that type of show with a new partner in Versus.”

“NFL Turning Point is symbolic of the high-quality, relevant programming viewers will see more of on our national, all-sports cable platform,” said Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Sports Group. “It unites two of sports’ premier storytellers in NBC Sports and NFL Films to bring viewers a new perspective on the game.”

It’ll also serve as NBC’s own form of self-promotion, as the show will often include games featuring teams that are playing against each other during the upcoming Sunday night game on NBC.

Clone Gets A Jim Rome Tattoo On His Calf

Growing up as a sports junkie in Los Angeles, I loved Jim Rome.

But as much as I wanted to be like the sports talk show host, I would never consider getting a tattoo of Rome on my body.

Celtics Deal with CSNNE Includes Equity Stake

The Boston Celtics are reportedly on the verge of becoming the latest team to acquire an equity stake in the television station that broadcasts their games, as Sports Business Journal is reporting the team is preparing to extend the current broadcasting rights with Comcast SportsNet New England through the 2038 season while acquiring equity that could amount to a 20 percent share of the company.

The Celtics currently earn between $15 million and $20 million per year in rights fees from CSNNE, an average that is expected to rise significantly in a new deal.

The two sides first started talking about a long-term deal a year ago. Sources said that talks heated up just before the Los Angeles Lakers blockbuster 25-year RSN deal with Time Warner Cable was announced in February. That deal averages $200 million per year. Serious negotiations between the Celtics and Comcast then ensued this spring under the shadow of the league’s labor uncertainty.

The lockout has not cooled negotiations, but a formal agreement would probably not be announced until the labor unrest has ended.

The Houston Astros and Rockets own a combined 80 percent of CSN Houston, while the San Francisco Giants hold a 30 percent stake in CSN Bay Area. In Chicago, the White Sox, Cubs, Bulls and Blackhawks hold a combined 70 percent stake of CSN Chicago.

Cover of SEC Football Media Guide is No. 5 Jersey

In case the No. 5 jersey on the cover of the SEC football media guide was too subtle, the cover also includes the helpful line, “Home of FIVE consecutive BCS National Champions.”

Can you name all five? I’ll give you a hint: Vanderbilt is not one of them.

Seriously, props to the SEC for a little bragging. It’s all in good fun.

Report: Trump Trying to Get Tyson for 'Apprentice'

According to Norm Clarke of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, NBC reality game show host Donald Trump is trying to convince boxing legend Mike Tyson, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday, to join the upcoming season of Celebrity Apprentice. Tyson as the project manager for, well, anything would be interesting to watch. Tyson has reinvented himself in recent years as a self-aware, cuddly caricature of his former menacing self, but the tinge of danger resides within, making him the focus of any scene he’s in — be it The Hangover movies or a boardroom confrontation with The Donald.

The postgame press conferences during the NBA Finals have been just as entertaining as the action on the floor.

On the heels of the awkward Gregg Doyel/LeBron James exchange, Jason Whitlock and Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle had an interesting back-and-forth following Game 4.

Journalists are now 0-for-2 during the NBA Finals. Just ask your question and move on.

ESPN Offering Facebook Fans Sneak Preview Of The Fab Five

For fans anticipating The Fab Five documentary (March 13 at 9 pm on ESPN), you can catch a sneak preview Tuesday night on ESPN’s Facebook page.

Following the extended clip, former Michigan guard Jalen Rose will host a live video chat and Q&A with fans.

The ESPN NBA analyst was outspoken this morning on First Take when discussing the documentary and Duke University.

“For me, Duke was personal,” Rose said. “I hated Duke. And I hated everything I felt Duke stood for. Schools like Duke didn’t recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms.”

Let’s see how long it takes before Coach Mike Krzyzewski responds to Rose and drops a “no comment.”

The Ongoing Saga of Scott Raab

On Tuesday, we told you about Esquire writer Scott Raab who found himself banned from the Miami Heat’s games after writing a column on Esquire.com that perhaps said some negative things about LeBron James, ie the “Whore of Akron.”

What exactly happened? Even Raab’s not sure.

Tim Frank [The NBA's head of media relations] has refused to issue me the NBA’s credential, citing a policy that does not actually exist, at least as far as I can tell. I’ve profiled NBA players for national magazines for more than twenty years; I’m in Miami filing daily for Esquire.com; I’m also writing a book about LeBron and Cleveland and Miami and me, to be published by HarperCollins in early 2012. Still, I can’t get an NBA credential because – well, I don’t know.

Raab plans to go the Friday’s game and sit in the stands. Wish him luck. We’ll keep you informed about the results.

Show Your Team Spirit as the NBA's New Web Editor

If you’re a sports fan who knows his or her way around HTML and CMS, we have the perfect job for you. The NBA is currently looking for a Web editor to be the liaison between team reps and the league in order to create, produce and publish features on multiple team sites. Sounds like a slam dunk to us.

If hired, you’ll be responsible for coordinating league-wide initiatives and maintaining best practices for the NBA’s editorial, technology, and business priorities. Of course, you’ll be updating content on a regular basis, including news, features, photos, video, and audio. Some event coverage may be necessary, but we hardly think writing about the Finals and All-Star Weekend will be a chore.

The ideal candidate will have three years of Internet publishing experience with a background in writing. You should be familiar with publishing tools and HTML coding, and be computer savvy — yes, this means social media know-how, too. Those who aren’t passionate about the game need not apply. Interested? Apply here.

NFL and ESPN to Start Negotiating for Monday Night Football?

ESPN snagged the Monday Night Football broadcast rights in 2006 for over $1 billion per year, and the network doesn’t want to let the franchise go. According to Pro Football Talk, the Worldwide Leader will begin negotiating with the National Football League this week when the owners meet in Chicago. ESPN will have an exclusive period of one to two months to negotiate, after which other suitors can get involved.

Don’t expect it to get to that point, however. ESPN has the cash, the desire, and the branding. Now that it has the NFL, it’s not giving the sport up.

Ironically, while Fox, CBS, and NBC are killing it in the ratings so far this season, MNF is down 5.7 percent from last year (although up 14 percent from 2008). That will change tonight, however, as the New York Jets-Minnesota Vikings matchup should draw viewers in massive numbers.

Chad Ochocinco's Accidental Charity: A Phone Sex Hotline

Chad Ochocinco was just trying to help the kids.

The Bengals’ wide receiver released a limited edition cereal box sold at Kroger supermarkets. A portion of the proceeds benefit Feed the Children, and the charity’s number was printed on every box of Ochocinco’s (a low fat food!).

Except… the digits (1-800-HELP-FTC) direct callers to a phone sex line. Feed the Children’s number is 1-888-HELP-FTC. Whoops.

Robert Bailey, president of Rosenhaus Sports, which represents Ochocinco, said Feed the Children accidentally gave the 800 exchange instead of 888.

The boxes are being recalled from the shelves and new ones – featuring the correct number – will be available soon. Poor Chad. Even when he tries to help the message gets lost in translation.

UFC Prelims See An Increase In Ratings

A month after their lowest ratings of the year, the UFC Prelims prior to UFC 119 last Saturday earned a 0.9/1.3 rating on Spike TV.

The live broadcast peaked with 1.36 million viewers according to Spike TV officials, which featured two preliminary-card bouts from Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The UFC Prelims before UFC 118 drew a series-low 1.1 million viewers.

UFC’s concept of teasing their pay-per-view broadcast with live fights is a great idea that boxing should consider … if they had undercards worth caring about. continued…
