Chris Bury Leaving ABC News

ABC News national correspondent Chris Bury is leaving the company, TVNewser has learned. Bury is something of a legend at ABC, having joined the network as a general assignment correspondent 30 years ago in 1982. In the ensuing years, he served as a correspondent around the globe for just about every ABC News program. He became a correspondent for “Nightline,” in 1993, and for a time served as the primary substitute anchor on the show. He was named national correspondent in 2007.

“[A]s I’m preparing to leave, I do want to thank so many talented colleagues for their enormous help over the years,” Bury wrote in an email to staff Monday. “It’s been a good run—through hurricanes, coup d’états, wars, presidential campaigns, scandals and all those quirky little stories along the way.”

No word yet on what Bury has planned next.

University of Wisconsin Alums Return to Talk the Future of TV News

The national news media has now mostly left Madison, Wisconsin following the eruption over collective bargaining agreements in February and March. But now several high profile tvnewsers who are alumni of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will be returning to the state capital this week to discuss the state of TV news.

“Insights on the Changing Nature of Television News” will be moderated by journalism professor James L. Baughman and will focus on the challenges and opportunities facing TV news.

Participating in Wednesday night’s forum: former CBS News man Jeff Greenfield, class of ’64; “The O’Reilly Factor” senior EP David Tabacoff, class of ’71; ABC News “Nightline” correspondent Chris Bury, class of ’77; former local news executive and now Poynter Institute faculty member Jill Geisler, class of ’72 and also from the class of ’72, Peter Greenberg, travel editor for CBS News.

Outgoing and incoming hosts of ABC’s “This Week” George Stephanopoulos and Christiane Amanpour.

ABC News president David Westin toasted Jake Tapper last night as the ABC News White House correspondent was honored with the Merriman Smith Award for presidential news coverage at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

As it was held in the room next to CBS’s cocktail reception, many of the celeb guests including Zach Galifianakis and Chelsea Handler jumped between parties.

Christiane Amanpour, who signed off CNN Friday night, was a guest of her new network ABC. George Stephanopoulos tells TVNewser the picture we snapped (above) is the first taken of the former and future hosts of the show.

This was GMA co-anchor Robin Roberts‘s first White House Correspondents dinner. We spotted her chatting with Sen. Scott Brown and his wife, local TV anchor Gail Huff. Other ABC Newsers in attendance: Martin Bashir, Cynthia McFadden, John Donvan, Chris Bury, and Jonathan Karl.
