The ratings for April, 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

• Primetime (Mon-Sun): 682K Total Viewers / 234K A25-54
• Total Day (Mon-Sun): 406K Total Viewers / 139K A25-54

Compared to April 2012 MSNBC was down -10% in total viewers and -1% in adults 25-54 in primetime. In total day, MSNBC was down -4% in total viewers and was flat in the demo. That said, coverage of the Boston bombing (and subsequent manhunt) on CNN and the Jodi Arias trial on HLN led to the channel placing fourth in the demo in total day for the month.

During dayside, MSNBC actually some substantial growth, with every show from 9AM-2PM up in both total and demo viewers. The most “Andrea Mitchell Reports” was up +14% in total viewers and +47% in the demo, while 12PM’s “Now” was up +16% in total viewers and +19% in the demo. “Martin Bashir” was up at 4 PM, improving +6% in total viewers and +41% in the demo.

The only MSNBC shows to be down in both total and demo viewers were “Morning Joe” (down -6% and -14%, respectively) , “PoliticsNation” at 6 PM (-15% and -11%, respectively), and 10PM, which is “The Last Word” and long-form docs (-8% and -6%, respectively).

Some shows, like “Hardball,” and “The Cycle” were down in total viewers but up in the demo.

“All In” averaged 651,000 total viewers last week, including 191,000 viewers adults 25-54. Compared to the same week last year (which, it should be noted was a political year, boosting all the cable channels), “All In” is down -25% in total viewers and -14% in the demo. Compared to Q1 2013, a better barometer for MSNBC’s 8 PM average in a non-political year, “All In” is down -27% in total viewers and down -8% in the demo.

The usual caveats apply, as it can take weeks or even months for a show to find any sort of ratings stability.

“All In,” MSNBC’s new 8 PM show, debuted to a pretty strong 859,000 total viewers and 298,000 adults 25-54. That improved upon its “Hardball” lead-in by over 200,000 viewers. “All In” was also only 12,000 viewers behind the top-rated O’Reilly Factor” on Fox News in the demo, where former Senator Scott Brown was filling in for Bill O’Reilly.

Compared to “The Ed Show’”s Q1 average, “All In” was up +45% in the demo, and down -4% in total viewers.

Two new shows debuted on cable news last night. One, “(Get to) The Point” on CNN is being given a temporary run at 10pmET this week (think “The Five” with a snazzier set and at 10 O’Clock). If it works, it could be made more permanent.

The other, “All In with Chris Hayes” is MSNBC’s new 8pmET show, replacing “The Ed Show” which replaced “The Last Word,” which replaced “Countdown,” all in the last 26 months.

The first show proved that Hayes is, at least at the outset, making few concessions to the new slot. There were no huge scoops, no big interviews, nothing to instantly crank up the anger from viewers. In what felt like an abridged version of his old show, he had two panel discussions–one about the Keystone pipeline and one about a cheating scandal in the Atlanta public schools–that ran for two segments each. These are not the kinds of hot-button issues that immediately arouse viewer passions, but part of Hayes’ bet is that there is an audience that wants to think about them when they get home from work

When Chris was on location reporting on the horrific shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, last December, keeping a dry eye throughout the nearly weeklong broadcast was almost impossible. “You cannot interview people directly affected by such a thing and not feel the pain they are feeling. As a reporter, I have to allow that to happen so I can communicate the emotion authentically to the viewers,” Chris emphasized. “You meet family members of the victims; you meet members of the community. You cry with them. At times, it can be a challenge to find the balance of being a communicator and establishing that necessary distance.”

“It’s a problem,” says Hayes, a lifelong Caucasian. “People’s opinions, interpretations of news, journalistic instincts, editorial concerns are the product of the people they are, the experiences they have, the way they move through the world.

“It’s why organizations, companies, the Senate, the U.S. Supreme Court benefit from diversity. … Diversity produces people with a specificity in their world view, and it benefits the product.”

Hayes’ product, ‘All In with Chris Hayes,’ debuts Monday in the 8 p.m. slot formerly occupied by Ed Schultz. Rachel Maddow (Hayes’ mentor) follows at 9, with Lawrence O’Donnell at 10.

It is a Murderers’ Row of liberal brainiacs. It is also, like the prime-time lineups at CNN and Fox News, blindingly white – a state of affairs to which Hayes says he has given “obsessive thought.”

Diversity is his top priority, he says. ‘All In’ will feature a wide variety of guests, especially conservatives. Hayes followed the same practice on his MSNBC weekend show, ‘Up with Chris Hayes,’ which debuted in 2011.

“I can’t control my gender, race or sexual orientation,” says Hayes. (He and his wife, law professor Kate A. Shaw, have an 18-month-old daughter.) “I can control who we have on and what voices we introduce to viewers.”

Those voices will be streamlined on ‘All In,’ Hayes says. Discussions will run up to 17 minutes, less than half as long as the marathons on his two-hour ‘Up.’

“I want to create a show that a lot of people watch, and produce really good TV,” says Hayes, who never met a complex sentence he didn’t like. “I want it to be high-quality journalism – compelling, dynamic and addictive.”

Hayes’ admiration of Maddow borders on hero worship. She gave Hayes his first shot as a guest anchor.

• After more than 40 years at Television Centre, BBC News moved into its new home at London’s Broadcasting House this week. The BBC newschannel and news bulletins for BBC One join BBC World News which moved into the new facility in January.
• Bloomberg Media Group and El Financiero will launch a new multi-platform Spanish-language business news service for Mexico and Central America. Broadcasting from El Financiero’s HD studio in Mexico City, the network will launch later this year.
• Denis Horgan, who’s been with MSNBC on and off for 10 years, will be the EP of the new Chris Hayes 8pmET program. Horgan originally joined MSNBC in 2003 as Senior Producer of “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.”

After his move was announced Politico’s Dylan Byers doubled down on his reporting, arguing that Schultz’s departure was planned in advance to make room for new talent. Schultz did not take kindly to this, and responded on his radio show yesterday afternoon:

“I’m amazed at media vultures out there who think that they’re gaining respect by people because they talk to someone anonymously. Politico,  they’re nothing but a bunch of freaking whores down there in Washington. That’s all they are. They don’t know their ass from third base and none of their people have talked to me.”

Kornacki was previously a co-host on “The Cycle,” the network’s weekday 3 p.m. show. He is a senior political writer for Salon.com. “Steve has a great political mind and his ability to connect with viewers made him a natural fit to continue driving that dialogue,” Griffin said in a statement.

Kornacki replaces Chris Hayes, who is moving to primetime next month.

“I want to thank Chris Hayes and his team for creating a totally original and incredibly smart model for political television,” Kornacki said. “It’s a real honor and a real challenge to take his seat, and I’m excited by the chance to foster the same kind of lively and diverse conversations.”
